Subject: RE: OBIT: Dorothy Love Coates From: GUEST,PJ Curtis. Date: 23 Apr 02 - 01:14 PM I am saddened to hear of the passing of one of the truly great voices in Gospel. Her 50's recoding of 'Strange Man' is a classic of the genre....a real spine-chiller. I played her 'Get Away Jordan' on my Rhythm & Roots ' prog. (RTE Radio 1 Ireland) only a few weeks back. DLC is gone ..but her spirit lives on in her magnificant body of recorded work with her Gospel Harmonettes. pjc |

Subject: RE: OBIT: Dorothy Love Coates From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 23 Apr 02 - 01:21 PM No matter how many times I've listened to Strange Man, it never fails to fill my eyes with tears. I sent a tape of black gospel to a friend of mine, telling her in particular about Strange Man. She completely broke down when she heard it. There are very few songs or singers who can express emotions powerfully enough to cause you to break down. I hear singers like Etta James (who I wish would record a gospel album) and hear Dorothy Love Coates in her. Listening to Etta sing "Somethings Got A Hold On Me tells you all you need to know about her gospel roots. She certainly heard Dorothy Love Coates, growing up. Jerry |

Subject: RE: OBIT: Dorothy Love Coates From: wysiwyg Date: 23 Apr 02 - 02:24 PM Stan North at Gospelflava.com (where I got the news posted above) is a real interesting guy and singer, and I have been enjoying a new correspondence with him. I hope to see him around Mudcat. He indicates they have done some good reviews of old-school gospelers and plan to do more, and once I have combed through their list of reviews I may post a set of links. This music is alive and well! Isn't it great we can pass it along! ~Susan |
