Subject: Fiddle teacher in Shasta County, Calif? From: Peter Kasin Date: 30 Jul 02 - 01:09 AM On a rafting trip down the klamath river in Northern California this weekend, found that one of the river guides is a beginning fiddler with a strong interest in American old-timey music. He's having a hard time locating a teacher, let alone another old-timey fiddler in Shasta county. He doesn't have a computer, and makes his living as a river guide. If there aren't any old-timey style fiddlers there, any fiddler willing to give him lessons in some basic bowing and fingering to get him started would do just fine. Anyone know of fiddlers in Shasta or a nearby county? (Trinity, maybe?) I'll pass word on to him. Thanks for any leads. Chanteyranger |

Subject: RE: Help: Fiddle teacher in Shasta County, Calif? From: DebC Date: 30 Jul 02 - 08:41 AM Wow. District 6 of the Old Time Fiddler's Association was a pretty hot place for fiddlers in the early 80's. Lots of California and National champs and close finishers came out of Northern California at that time, which was when I lived there. Evelyn Horner is in Mt. Shasta City and teaches fiddle. It has been a very long time since I saw her though, so I have no contact information for her. Adrien Jacoby is a music teacher at Parsons Jr. High in Redding. Her daughter is J'anna Jacoby who was a California State Fiddle Champ at some point in the 80's. Both Evelyn and Adrien were active in the OTFA, and I believe Evelyn still is. I know her daughter, Shelly, teaches fiddle. I would suggest getting in touch with Bernie at Bernie's Guitar. They can steer you toward Dist. 6 and some fiddle teachers. I remember that area of California overun with fiddlers! Deb |
