my father has sang it for years ...

Sounds like "In the Garden," written by Homer Rodeheaver.

Sorry, I can't help you. It's not In The Garden, which was written by C. Austin Miles though it was performed by Virginia Asher and Homer Rodeheaver (Click here for sound clip). Any more clues?
