Subject: OBIT: Canute Caliste (Caribbean fiddler) From: greg stephens Date: 25 Nov 05 - 05:42 PM I hope someone can provide a blue clicky to the Guardian obituary today for Canute Caliste( i havent got the technology myself). He was noted as a great primitive painter, giving very vivid pictures of his home island of Carriacou, of Grenada (WEst Indies). But he was also one of the few exponents left of the old Caribbean quadrille fiddle style, and made a few recordings. Many people (myself included) first heard of him through the work of Joe Scurfield, who died so tragically earlier next year. Joe, from the Old Rope String Band, became aware of Canute Caliste and how the old quadrille style was getting to be on its last legs. He organised the collection of violins and took them to Carriacou, in the hope of stimulating youngsters into keeping Canute's tunes alive. It was one of Joe's wonderful recordings of a session at Canute Caliste's place that introduced me to this lovely music. Let's hope their collective efforts ensure that it continues. |
