This very sad news has just been forwarded via SEFAN

"It is with great sadness that today (17/3/06) we received the news that Howard Evans has lost his long battle with cancer. He died early this morning.

The Folk scene has lost the best trumpeter and brass arranger it has ever had. The music world has lost a great friend, musician, negotiator (his MU day job) and all round good bloke. Our deepest sympathy to his family.

Officials at the Musicians Union will publicise details of funeral and/or memorial if that is what Howard's family wishes.

Please spread the word to anyone who knew Howard.

Steve Heap
Director, Folk Arts England"

The last time I saw Brass Monkey it was without Howard, and his presence in the lineup was very sorely missed. At that time we were asking after him, and news was that he was still poorly but hopefully recovering.... sadly time has obviously proved otherwise. Many sympathies to his family.

How sad.

I was listening to a live recording of a "Home Service" gig from circa 1987, when I read this post.

What a master Howard was, a true pro who held the whole thing together with a great understanding of the material, and a real empathy with the rest of the band.

"The Master", as John Tams referred to him on that recording.

Deepest sympathy to family and frieds.

Ian

I'm really very sad to hear this. I only heard because I turned on the Mike Harding show by mistake last night! I love the sound of Brass Monkey and was talking to John Kirkpatrick about the chances of a new album and/or tour last summer at Whitby. He had said that Howard was very unwell and so it seemed unlikely.

Thank goodness that he recorded so many fine CDs, with Brass Monkey and Home Service which leaves a wonderful legacy. Inspirational English music - brass and free reeds in perfect harmony.

May Howard rest in peace. Condolences to family and friends.
