Well, this is WAY early but I am excited about the trip. My daughter is getting married in Lancaster on August 13, 2005. The only committment I have is to be there on that date and probably a few days either side of it to spend time with my family. Beyond that my time is my own as long as my money holds out.

So, what is happening in England in the good old summertime? Where should I plan to go to visit with the maximum number of Mudcatters and see the most I can see?

Try Whitby Folk Week ( about 2 hours drive from Lancaster on the East coast ) third week in August. You'll like it.

If your early enough there are a number of catters to be found at Sidmouth, first week of August. Season and Day tickets are sold out but there's plenty going on around the town.

Accommodation might be a problem now, but often is easier to find one or two days before the festival as that's when last minute cancellations (domestic crises etc) happen. Try the Tourist office around that time, it's worked for me and friends in the past

Tell her congrats from me and if you are down South there's a spare room ( well, sparish, the cats think it's theirs) anytime.End of August is Towersey Village Folk Festival.......one of the best,IMO and chock full of catters...... or perhaps nutters.......or perhaps both.

There's always the Fylde Folk Festival at the beginning of September too. August 2005 gives you plenty of time to think about a few. Sidmouth, Broadstairs and has already been mentioned, Whitby. They all follow one another and are a week long each!! Fylde is a weekend one.

Hmmm, Lancaster appears to be up in the NE corner. Maybe you could bus over to Durham and hang out at the Black Diamond Pub with Jez Lowe and friends.

Danny and Joyce McLeod, who have done a whole lot to revive interest in C. Fox Smith's sea poems and have set many to music, also live in County Durham. I can send you e-mail address if you like.

I'll take all the email addresses and websites anyone cares to send me. If you want to email me and don't want to use the PM system my email address is [e-mail]. That one already catches all the spam so there is no worry about giving it out on a public forum.

I have over a year to prepare so I should be able to see pretty much everything I want to see. Morty, I'll never turn down a spare room even if I have to share it with cats. I expect I'll be travelling with Wakana so any offered space needs to fit two.

By the way, Charley, I also expect to stop in Maine on this trip. We may be making this part of a journey 'round the world.

Oh, yes, an entire year for planning! I was thinking that you were off to the UK in a month.

If you need beds in London and don't mind cats, there's plenty of room (and three cats) here for you. We may even be able to throw in the odd pick up from airports if you really need it!

The only thing definite, Mary, is August 13. All other dates are negotiable and any offered accomodations will be accepted. Neither of us object to cats, dogs, birds, and the occasional reptile assuming it has a cage to stay in.

Bridgnorth FF is last w/e in Aug. Plenty of 'catters. It usually clashes with Whitby. if you venture down south of Shrewsbury look on cresby.com but check by phone if you are travelling any distance.

I heard on the radio this morning that the Brits are enjoying heat waves and uncomfortable weather in general. However, the program went on to say they don't complain about it because they don't want to be faced with installing air conditioners. There was also something about the English version of the sun tan. The reporter commented that in other parts of the world it is called a 3rd degree burn.

Fylde is in early Sept 2/3/4 just down the coast in "sunny" Fleetwood there's something folky most nights..

Just to expand on Kitty's remark - Cecil Sharp House closes completely for the whole of August. The Tuesday "Sharps" folk club will probably relocate to O'Reilly's (Dolly Fossett's) in Kentish Town Road over that period.

Liz: If you put Limpit in the pond wouldn't the pirhanas be in danger ?

Wow! Sing professionally in England? I'm always willing to try. Payment in the form of food is just as good as cash because I'd only spend it in a restaurant anyway.

As for the Cecil Sharp house being closed in August, I am not worried about that. I can adjust my travel however I want as long as I am in Lancaster for the wedding on August 13.

As for singing at the wedding, Kell, just tell me what you want and I'm your Dad. I have plenty of time to learn something new too.

Correction to my posting above - sorry about the misinformation which was actually obtained from a club organiser who hadn't consulted her colleagues.

Sharps Folk Club is moving to "The Exmouth Arms", Starcross Street (on the corner with Cobourg St), near Euston Station, for the 5 Tuesdays in August. They will all be singers's nights.

Nantwich Folk Festival is generally the last weekend in August. In Cheshire in the NW of England,about 70 miles south of Lancaster. Extremely well-placed for the visitor to Britain, just off the M6 (the main north-south motorway, easy 4 hours to London, Glasgow or Edinburgh), and en route to the Irish ferry at Holyhead(Wales). Small friendly festival, nice little town.

Are you really wanting the formality of festivals, Naemanson, or are you looking for like-minded people to stay with and take you to local clubs/sessions/events?
I live in Stratford-upon-Avon (Warwickshire), near the centre of England, and normally would be very pleased to offer you a bed myself, and would be pleased to show you local clubs, music sessions, singarounds, morris dancing and mummers etc, perhaps with a bit of Shakespeare in between. However, August is an up-up-and-away month for me! You might just catch me in for a few days in between festivals. This year it is:-
* Fri 30 July - Sat 7 Aug Sidmouth International Festival (Devon),
* Fri 13 - Sun 15 Aug Saltburn Folk Festival (North Yorkshire),
* Fri 20 - Sat 28 Aug Whitby Folk Week (North Yorkshire),
* Sat 28 - Mon 30 Aug Towersey Village Festival (Oxfordshire), and
* Fri 3 - Sun 5 Sept Wareham Wail Song & Ale (Dorset),
* Mon 6 Sept Abbots Bromley Horn Dancers (Staffordshire),
* Fri 10 - Sun 12 Sept Great Yarmouth Maritime Festival (Norfolk),
* with visiting friends in Wales, Suffolk & Yorkshire in between.
Obvious I could recommend any of those festivals and you would certainly meet many Mudcatter at all of them. By Spring 2005 it should be clearer what the position will be next year ... Keep in touch as your plans start to materialise and enjoy!

Towersey Folk Festival is from Thursday 26th August....you really need to be there on the Thursday to get a place to camp. Most events start on the Friday.

Yes, it would be nice to arrive by Thursday but I have to get back from Whitby FF. Having said that, in the past I have always gone on Friday and have had no problem camping (but I certainly didn't get your choice spot in the central site!)

Her latest plan is to find someone who could play fiddle or cello for the wedding. I think a nice band would be good for the reception. Now, if only I knew someone who played music in England...

Of course, this all depends on her decision of what she wants and where she wants her reception.

Well, it's good to know I've got some volunteers for the wedding. I've got a friend who plays the harp who I've asked to play at the ceremony...but if she turns me down, I'll be looking for other people of musical talent. :)

I've got plenty of suitable music - much of it as PDF File scores, from when I used to be part of a consort (6 voices 2S, 2A, 1T, 1B) which used to provide music for weddings. What about "Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring" or even "Hail, Hail Smiling Morn". Just let me know if you need a tenor.

Plans are in hand and percolating along. So far I haven't set any hard and fast dates except for the actual wedding date. I need to get off my can and get some work done I think. Wakana is planning to wear her formal kimono to the wedding but carrying it might be a bit of a chore. Her best estimate is that it is worth about $35,000 and is completely irreplaceable. That thought boggles my mind. I did buy a Little Martin guitar to travel with. That will make the trip easier.
