Subject: Radio for folkies? From: Kelida Date: 20 Apr 00 - 11:09 PM In Cincinnati, we only have one really great station for folk music, and that's WAIF, 88.3. They play a lot of blues and folk and also reggae, jazz, and local music, occasionally some hardcore or industrial for variety, but usually when I listen to it they play folk or blues (a lot of it from local groups). I was wondering, are there any other great radio stations out there? Peace--Bridget |

Subject: RE: BS: Radio for folkies? From: Kelida Date: 21 Apr 00 - 12:04 AM It's only the best radio ever, right after Mudcat radio. It isn't all folk, but a lot is. And I love blues as much as I love folk. Even the non-folk-or-blues stuff is usually good. Peace--Bridget |
Subject: RE: BS: Radio for folkies? From: JenEllen Date: 21 Apr 00 - 01:11 AM Kelida: Have you tried the web-radio on Internet Explorer? Lots of blues/bluegrass/folk choices there, and they play 24-7. Drop a line if you need any help. ~Elle |

Subject: RE: BS: Radio for folkies? From: JenEllen Date: 21 Apr 00 - 04:04 AM Is that REALLY all you gotta say? Then why bother? The young lady had a legitimate musical question, folks are trying to answer. If you would like help, please ask, and I am sure folks would offer the same help for you. If you are feeling the need to be an insufferable prat, just don't. No one appreciates it.~Elle |

Subject: RE: BS: Radio for folkies? From: Mbo Date: 21 Apr 00 - 04:18 PM Good gravy Caitrin, you mean they actually have something like that here? Funny, there were flyers all over the School of Art at ECU, for the band Nemo, who was playing at our SOA Shindig on Wednesday...a traditional group ("playing your old-time favorites like "Cigarettes & Whisky" and "Salty Dog") and they were sponsored by Backporch Music. I was wondering what it was! Heh heh heh...sounds interesting! **rubs hands smugly** --Mbo |

Subject: RE: BS: Radio for folkies? From: Amergin Date: 22 Apr 00 - 03:32 AM JenEllen, why the hell did you see the need to attack me over my comment? All I meant is that I was jealous, because we don't have nothing like that out here. Maybe next time you should think some one's comment through abit before you shove yourself down their unwilling throats. I would really appreciate it. Blessed be. Amergin |
Subject: RE: BS: Radio for folkies? From: JenEllen Date: 22 Apr 00 - 02:49 PM Amergin: Dreadfully sorry! Please forgive my actions. The overabundance of 'thread-uglies' lately must have really set me on edge.*bg* I had the mistaken impression you were picking on the young folk. It wasn't fair to you at all. Where do you live? With the resources and people here at the 'Cat, we should be able to find something for you as well! ~Jen |
Subject: RE: BS: Radio for folkies? From: Amergin Date: 22 Apr 00 - 03:44 PM That's ok, JenEllen. I overreacted abit myself. I know all too well about the "thread-uglies". I have seen them on other boards. I live in the Portland, Oregon area and I think the only station around here that plays folk is KBOO or whatever the local public radio is. They don't play it very often and I'm never around when they do. Blessed be. Amergin |
Subject: RE: BS: Radio for folkies? From: Irish sergeant Date: 22 Apr 00 - 03:46 PM Sorry to say nothing in the Syracuse NY area Damned the miserable luck. I do know that at one point the oldies station in the Washington DC/Baltimore, MD area used to have a three hour Folk show every Sunday night but that was 13 years ago I believe it was 104.9 fm but don't quote me on that. It has been far too many years and beers ago. I will check out the sites but if anyone knows of a good folk music station in Central New York don't keep it a secret. Neil |
Subject: RE: BS: Radio for folkies? From: GUEST,VIcky Bunsen Date: 22 Apr 00 - 04:02 PM The best folk station I've ever heard is at http://kbcs-fm.org/listen.htm. You can listen live over the Internet. They're in Seattle/Belleview. |
Subject: RE: BS: Radio for folkies? From: GUEST,JenEllen Date: 25 Apr 00 - 01:51 AM Vicki: is that the station with Mike Barstow's Cajun show on it? Amergin: I'm in Washington State. Do you get any of the Seattle/Tacoma/Belleview stations there? A lot of them also broadcast simultaneously on the web. |
Subject: RE: BS: Radio for folkies? From: Mark Cohen Date: 25 Apr 00 - 02:49 AM Amergin and JenEllen, you're making me homesick for the Northwest! I've come to depend on WKSU on the net for my folk fixes. Rediscovered Kat Eggleston there, too, who moved from Seattle soon after I did and is now in Chicago, and is one of my favorite songwriters. Is Sandy Bradley's Pot Luck still on KBCS? Amergin, get in touch with the Portland Folklore Society (they have a website) and somebody should be able to point you to a good source. Or maybe Margo or Barbara can help. Last time I was in Oregon, it sounded like KBOO had turned into a hiphop station. They used to play a lot of folk. Oh, well, we do have at least two 24 hr Hawaiian music stations here (one traditional, one more contemporary), so I guess I can't complain too much (sly grin!) Aloha, Mark |
Subject: RE: BS: Radio for folkies? From: GUEST,JenEllen Date: 25 Apr 00 - 05:32 PM Aloha back'atcha Mark! Thanks for the tip on WKSU. YES! Kat is great! If you like her stuff, more NW'ers to check out are: Heidi Muller, Janis Carper (solo and w/ Crystal, Spring, and Carper), Lisa Theo, and Greg Scott. ~Elle |
Subject: RE: BS: Radio for folkies? From: bflat Date: 25 Apr 00 - 06:46 PM Hugh Blumenthal is the folk music specialist for About.com. Among the offerings at his site is a comprehensive list of Folk Radio and Webcastings. Visit it and decide for yourself what you can work into your schedule. In addition it is a fine site for all those with an interest in the folk genre. I don't setup URL's as part of my post because I've never tried it but just search for About.com +Entertainment +Folk. It should get you there. Cheers! |

Subject: RE: BS: Radio for folkies? From: John of the Hill Date: 25 Apr 00 - 08:06 PM Down here at the southern tip of Illinois, I can get a nice overlap of college and community stations playing folk music on the weekends. I keep switching around the left hand side of the dial for stations from Murray,KY; Cape Girardeau,MO; and Carbondale, IL. When the weather is right, I listen to KDHX in St.Louis, especially Sunday morning for 'The Family Reunion' and Monday morning for 'Ireland in America'. I think KDHX has a web site.KAXE from Minnesota is another good site for web radio, though the details escape me now. John |
Subject: RE: BS: Radio for folkies? From: Mark Cohen Date: 26 Apr 00 - 05:14 AM JenEllen, you've really got me homesick now. Check your personal messages and you'll see why. Still trying to find out if Sandy Bradley's Pot Luck radio show is still going, and if it's available on the Net. I used to go to hear the show when it was broadcast live from Wallingford, "Gateway to Ballard." Aloha, Mark |
Subject: RE: BS: Radio for folkies? From: BuskerBard Date: 26 Apr 00 - 09:36 AM Down around sunny Tampa Bay, Florida, WMNF Rules!! Our local community radio station plays folk, blues, reggae, klezmer, celtic... you name it. Certain shows feature certain genres, like Bill Dudley's "Music of the Isles" every Thursday evening is my favorite (celtic stuff, yum) - but you'll find variety all the time. Check 'em out on the web at http://www.wmnf.org ! |
Subject: RE: BS: Radio for folkies? From: Dale Rose Date: 27 Apr 00 - 12:29 AM Somebody already mentioned KDHX, my favorite radio station, on or off the net, but I'd like to add KBON, Eunice, Louisiana for the best in Cajun, Zydeco, Swamp Pop, Blues, Classic Country, everything with a Louisiana Flavor! They are quite responsive as well. One night they played a recording that was interesting to me, but I had no idea who or what it was. A request to the "Email the DJ" link brought me the info on the song, who did it, and where to get it. (Dan et Lou from Canada, in case you are curious) A request for a song by Kira Viator if they had a chance brought not one, but two songs by the young lady, plus a station plug by her. Highly recommended ~~ windows media player. Playing Geno Delafose at this very moment. |
Subject: RE: BS: Radio for folkies? From: GUEST,Phil Cooper Date: 27 Apr 00 - 08:10 PM The Chicago area still has the midnight special at WFMT, 98.7 fm. WBEZ, the public station figures at Thistle & Shamrock and Prairie Home Companion are all the folk that we need. They used to have several other shows, but dumped them when a new station manager came on. I stopped pledging at that point. Now, when they call, I tell them I will start pledging again when they present another locally produced folk show. WDCB in Glen Ellyn at 90.9 has several good folk shows. |
Subject: RE: BS: Radio for folkies? From: Dale Rose Date: 28 Apr 00 - 10:23 AM Oh, forgot another one of my top favorites, certainly one of the most unusual ~~ ELDORADIO, CESKE BUDEJOVICE, CZECH REPUBLIC. Eldorádio has both 28 and 56 Real Audio streams. Hard to describe what you'll hear there. Like they say, American and Czech country & western music, folk songs, and bluegrass. You might get a Gordon Lightfoot song ~~ done up Czech style, a Johnny Cash classic, who knows what will come next? I would say that their country music leans mostly toward the so called classic variety. Right now they are playing a song which sounds like a cross between bluegrass and a czech folk song, with a bit of comedy thrown in. Oh, here's a priceless one, I've Been Everywhere done up Czech-style!
From their home page in English (though you can choose Czech, if you prefer): Eldoradio started broadcasting in March, 1997, at 88.4 MHz in Southern Bohemia. With the support of the University of Southern Bohemia, we began live internet broadcasting in September, 1997.

Subject: RE: BS: Radio for folkies? From: GUEST,Steve Latimer Date: 28 Apr 00 - 03:17 PM We're very fortunate in Southern Ontario to have Rick Fielding's Acoustic Workshop on Monday nights at 7:00 from CIUT, 89.5 FM. There's also a very good blues show, Let The Good Times Roll that comes on just before Rick at 6:00 P.M. We also have a Folk show whose name escapes me on CJRT, 91.1 from noon until 2:00 every Saturday, and they also have a good blues show from 3:00 until 5:00 on Saturdays. |

Subject: RE: BS: Radio for folkies? From: Marymac90 Date: 29 Apr 00 - 11:37 PM WXPN, 88.5 fm, out of Phila, has The Folk Show, Sundays, 4 to 8pm, and The Blues Show, Saturdays, 8pm to 1am. They also integrate a lot of different genres of folk (though not much strictly trad) into the rest of their programming, particularly The World Cafe. To find out about their webcasts, check at XPN.org |
Subject: RE: BS: Radio for folkies? From: Mark Cohen Date: 30 Apr 00 - 04:12 AM Marymac, is Gene Shay still doing the Folk Show? I think the last time I heard him was around 1970, when I was a senior in high school, but I seem to recall hearing he's back at it. When I returned to Philly in the late 70s there was a woman doing the show on WXPN, can't remember her name, but that was the show that awakened my interest in traditional music. Aloha, Mark |

Subject: RE: BS: Radio for folkies? From: GUEST,pbruner@ukans.edu Date: 01 May 00 - 01:17 PM The local NPR affiliate in Lawrence, KS, has a GREAT folk show from 1 - 7 pm Sundays. The station is KANU, 91.5 for those in the area. For the rest of you, listen in via the web - go to KANU.ukans.edu. Celtic is from 1 - 2:30, contemporary folk from 2:30 - 4:30, roughly, then it gets old-timey and bluegrass is from 6:00 - 7:00. Something for everyone! Pamela Bruner |
