Whats your favourite folk CD or Tape from any Country? (Denmark, Sweden, Iceland, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, England etc) I'm interested in all types of folk music from all around the world so I thought some fellow mudcatters might be able to advice me on a couple of world class releases.

My favorite at the moment is split between 'Barrage' -Live in Europe (from Canada) There a great group 10 nstrong and include 7 hot young fiddlers. 'Pladeria' - by Xose Manuel Budino (Galacia) is a galacian piuper who also plays whisle etc, A great release.

Because I'm more vocally oriented my listening tends to go that way. The Corries Silver Collection is high on the list at present. So is Home In Halifax by Stan Rogers, The Water Lilly, which I view as a perfect recording, by Priscilla Herdman, The Sons of the Pioneers-1934-1938, And about anything by Bok, Trickett, and Muir.

From Montana: Willson & McKee: "Patterns" some very beautiful original songs and wickedly good hammer dulcimer orginals and playing.

Donovan: "Sutras"

"Songs of the Indian Flute 1 & 2": John Rainer, Jr. (earlier 1980's cassette, can't find it anywhere now and this is primo, real stuff with his dad doing backup)

and, an old cassette of "Ad Vielle Que Pourra, New French Folk Music" put out by Green Linnet in 1989. Maybe some of you know these people: Alain Leroux, Clement Demers, Luc Thonon,and Gilles Plante. This was the first, I hope not their last. I haven't gone looking.

I heard a Welsh folk band called the Bucket Band on the streets of Cardiff a few months ago and bought their CD - very good. This is the one that most fits into the Folk category - a mixture of Irish and Hungarian tunes.

Talaitha MacKenzie does some interesting Gaelic language stuff - modern but not New Age.

Neil Young (Harvest, After the Goldrush) Joni Mitchell (Blue, Clouds, Ladies of the Canyon) Edie Brickell - Ghost of a Dog. The Levellers - Levelling the Land. Bjork - the ablbum she did in Icelandic and didn't release in the UK. Sally Oldfield - Waterbearer, Easy Pentangle - Sister, Live.

I'd have to say Carl Sandburg's Flatrock Ballads. I don't play it very often, but it's the one I'd hate to lose the most.

Hallo everyone, at the moment I like Sharon Shannon from Ireland.She was with the waterboys I think.

I also like Bj”rk and I think the best album that she have made is the Clingl¢, she made that record in Iceland and in Icelandic, it is a great album it is mixed by folk and jazz music . From Canada I like Mc Ginty croup from nova scotia.

As mainstream as they are often accused of being, I still have a deep and abiding love of the Clancy Brothers/Makem recordings, with a personal favorite being 'Live at Carnegie Hall' - mainly for the wonderful medley of children's songs that they do on it.

Hi, Sam, no, I don't know of any others like Le Ville. I stumbled onto that tape by chance. It had been sent in to the arts center I worked at, as a demo in hopes of a booking. I took it when they closed the place up for good.

My French-Canadian-American born husband likes it, but his mother thought it was too modern, not true French folk to her.:-)

I agree with Don Meixner about anything done by BMT. I consider the best series of albums to be The Golden Ring available from Folk Legacy.

I think one of my favourite ever tapes must be one called 'Continental Drift' by Danny Carnahan and Robin Petrie, lovely dulcimer playing, simple and wonderful, one of the most atmospheric tapes I've ever heard, I play it when I'm painting, and it's always inspiring.

Probably my most favorite of favorites is the Kretzner/Leibovitz lp "Pigtown Fling". I believe it's a Green Linnet issue & not reissued in CD as far as I know. Lots of good dulcimer playing. I even bought 2 extra when the company was getting rid of their old vinyl.

Nic Jones's "Penguin Eggs" and anything with Woody, Cisco and Sonny. "Deepest Lancashire" "Along the Coaly Tyne" are a couple of good compilations.

Well hello, Rick Fielding here..having just pushed Sandy out of his comfortable Mudcat perch. I swore that I would wait until the tour is over and I was back in Toronto before diving back onto the "cat", but Holy Cow, what's a boy to do when threads like this (and about a dozen others) come up and pull me towards the computer. I feel like Ulysses when he heard those dangerous gal folksingers calling him to that island.

For me, a great album is one that I bought years ago and still listen to on a regular basis. Can't narrow it down to a single one, but here are some VERY important collections of music to me.

"Leadbelly's Last Sessions" on Folkways. "Horton Barker", also on Folkways.(recorded by my host this week, S.P.) "Flatt and Scruggs at Carnegie Hall", on Columbia. "Fred Gerlach", Folkways again. "Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger..Broadside", ditto Folkways. and finally (for now) "Obray Ramsay sings folksongs from the three laurels", on Prestige Folklore.....Geez! better let Sandy have his chair back!

Can't say its my favorite, but one I really like alot is "The Bristol Sessions" and anything by Dave Macon, Charlie Poole, and Jimmie Rodgers.

The Dirt Band's "Will the Circle Be Unbroken?" is an old favorite, although some of the numbers grind on me a bit--but it has great performances by Doc Watson, Earl Scruggs, Vassar Clements, Merle Travis, Jimmy Martin and others. Roy Acuff sang well, but is a sanctimonious old fart, and Mother Maybelle was slipping a bit at 80 plus. The Nitty Gritties are fine back-up players but their singing certainly paled in comparison with Doc's, Merle's, Jimmy's and Roy's, and their shameless sucking up to their guests gets to be embarrassing on 50th listening.

Another, very different thing I listen to a lot is David Grissman's "Common Chord," with Daniel Kobialka, a classical violinist with the SF symphony and a bunch of great side men. Funky it isn't but beautiful it sure as hell is, and Norton Buffalo is such an awesome harmonica player I get chills running up and down my sacroiliac.

I'm kind of partial to small releases by local bands - plus I hope that buying their CD's will help keep the music alive. One local core band in particular has released three different albums under different names and with different supporting personnel: Tenpenny which does mostly Scots/Irish music; Yankee Clipper who throw in some sailing and whaling songs in with the Celtic; and The Beehive Band who throw out the shanteys and replace them with Mormon folksongs, hymns, and dance tunes from early Utah history. But as far as well-known players, my two most recent acquisitions and therefore current favorites are "Blow Boys Blow" by A.L. Lloyd and Ewan MacColl and "Southern Banjo Sounds" by Mike Seeger. I particularly enjoy the "scholarly" approach they have on the liner notes of both these CD's which teach (or at least speculate) about the origins of each song as well as, in the case of Seeger, explaining some the technique and the instruments used.

I find myself going back to Ewan MacColl's Songs of Two Rebellions on Folkways, as well as to his Prestige album (LP) The Best of Ewan MacColl. But there are also many other "favorites."

I can never forget Robin Hall and Jimmie McGregor, it was their singing that awakened a real interest in folk music, for me. I thought that their "Tonight" LPs were superb of their type. Anyone agree ?

I had "Woodsmoke and Oranges" on vinyl and decided to update to a CD about last Christmas.

There is a fine CD now that has that LP plus "Jacknife Gypsy" complete, back to back and the fidelity is first rate.

I have gotten up to the song "Jacknife Gypsy" but not beyond. Guess it should alot more time next listening session.

I wish I could have seen The Seldon Scene at The Cellar Door while John Duffy was around.

Unfortunatey, DC is a long drive from the San Francisco Bay Area.

We agree on a great many folks in music: Poco, Pozo Seco Singers, Burrito Brothers, Paul Siebel, et al. Also the James Gurley was the greatest psych guitar player ever.

Take my word about the work of Bill Kirchen. His last three CD are killer. Music for grownups.

One of the greatset Fender-slingers ever.

He sang lead (rare) on "Down to Stems and Seeds Blues" with Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airman. His guitar work has gotten better evey year since then.

I have at least 2 Commander Cody LPs... I loved those guys... They were the shits...

Yer gonna hate this but I could get to the Cellar Door in 15 minutes for about 2 years... The Cellar Door was so intimate that the worst seat was 5o feet from the stage...

Saw Richie Havens there... Saw Goose Creek Symphony there... Saw Leo Kottke there... Saw Joan Collins there... Saw a lot of folks there...

BTW, Poco played a free concert on the Mall in '72... I was there...

DC was a happening town...
