I am amazed that there appears to be no thread discussing this rather wonderful series which ended its run on BBC tonight.

Phil Cunningham took a fresh and original look at Scottish music, and came up with a fascinating series which managed to entertain and educate at the same time.

Tonight's episode where he took his self-composed tune all the way from Edinburgh to Nashville via Cape Breton Island and the Appalcahian Mountains was one of the most fascinating things I have ever watched.

Phil Cunningham in Studio B with Lloyd Green and Jimmy Capps, who'd 'a thunk it ?

One of the best things BBC Scotland has ever come up with, imo.

Well Murray I don't know much about Phil as the music played in most of Quebec Canada area is not his stuff. But I watched a video of him on www.capebretonlive.com their Celtic Color program and watched one of the greatest shows I hadn't seen in a long time. I wish I could have watch what you did. A fabulous musician

I agree, it,s been a great series. Deserves wider coverage on BBC (BBC 4 for a start, perhaps?). Luckily, I can get BBC 2 Scotland on Sky here in Ireland.

Phil made a very creditable presenter for the tradition.

Adrien, do you know what date the show was that you watched? They don't seem to have a search function, so I looked at the past shows, but they don't have any from 2007, unless I missed them somewhere? I'd like to watch the video you mentioned.

Murray, that sounds like a wonderful program! I doubt we'll ever see it over here.

Agrre. One of the best things on TV for ages. Thanks to Sky we could also watch it down here in Yorkshire.

Repeat on BBC4 would be well good.

kat,
On the home page you should see a column on the Right hand side. the third on the list should read "videos". Now on the left side go to the second picture which says recorder live October 7th, 2005
Click on that picture and scroll down to the third picture which says Phil Cunningham.
My favorite is the slow number they do which is the second or third number. Raises the hair on your back. Turn the sound on this one way way up.

Hi all, just joined here today.I happened to watch last nights screening
of 'Scotland's Music' which saw Phil Cunningham, amongst other places in the Appalachian mountains, then to Nashville ~~ What an amazing programme.I myself am Scottish.I found the history
of the music and the origins of the cross cultural influences fascinating..There was towards the end of the programme,a session in Nashville which saw 'Phil, and several other musicians playing an arrangement, of a song called 'The Secret Life Of Roses'~~ i so wished i had now taped this,i think it is one of the most beautiful love songs i have ever heard...if anyone has a copy of this, i would be delighted to hear from you, *raises a glass* Cheers !! ~~all the best, Bluesbabee :D

This was a series well worth making and watching and I will watch any more that, hopefully, get made. But. Having watched them all, some of them several times, I would have liked a control button to mute Phill Cunningham's talking over the singers and players' performances. Little enough of Rod Patterson, Geordie McIntyre, Gordina McCulloch, Cathy Ann McPhee, and the other assembled cast of "Scotland's Music" including Natalie and Buddy MacMaster, is to be heard on TV as it is, so I would have liked to have heard what there was free of comment. Let us hope that this series is only the first of many future like minded programs to come. I have fond memories of an other program linked with Phill Cunningham, called Tall A Balla. Which was the best TV presentation of Traditional based music that I can rember.

To all those who have PM'ed me, I have tried to PM you today but I get "ACCESS DENIED" when I try to send the PM.

Anyway, I had a bit of a hiccup with the DVDs, the guy who was copying them went out of business and I had to retrieve the master DVDs and get them done elsewhere.

I have just received word that they are ready, so I will pick then up today. They will be mailed either today or tomorrow. Once I have mailed them I will PM you again to tell you they have been dispatched and to let you know how much the cost is.

Hopefully the PM facility will be working by then ...

Hello -- have just happened on this page while searching for info on the programme, which I missed as I don't have a television! I do however have a computer that can play DVDs, and I'm particularly interested in a segment I heard about, showing footage of Free Church of Scotland congregation on the Isle of Lewis singing in a style that (I'm told) resembles American shape note or sacred harp singing. Had a look at the various clips on the BBC website but none of them show this particular segment. Murray, if it's on your DVD and you're able to send me a copy, that would be wonderful -- you can email me directly on sarah@sarahmcquaid.com. I'm very happy to pay for same, would buy a DVD from the BBC if one was available!

All the best,

This series is curently showing on BBC4. Unfortunately, it's on at about midnight Tuesday, and has the briefest of mentions in the Radio Times. Made in 2007, it has, presumably, only been shown before on BBC Scotland. I missed, I think, the first 2 programmes, but what I've seen since has impressed. An intelligent look at Scotland's music, not completely confined to folk music. Phil makes a good presenter. 2 more programmes in the series of 6 yet to come.
Does anyone know if the series has been issued on DVD?
The BBC should be encouraged to repeat the series at a decent time, with some advance publicity.
Derek Schofield

It was interesting to compare how good the old singers were to how bad some of the newer ones were. Capercaillie - what were they trying to do? - wasn't even good rock music - dire!

I wrote to the BBC at the end of the first showing to compliment them on the series, and I asked about the possibility of a DVD. The response was that they'd had an unexpectedly excellent response from people about the series, but, sadly, no DVD was going to be prodcued. They said something about not getting all the artists' permissions and other administrative stuff like that. Shame.
