Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Genie Date: 03 Apr 08 - 02:04 PM Good to have the dates firm. (Firm is good) Means I can go ahead and try to convert my FFMs to an actual ticket. Hope it's not too late. For once, I reserved the right weekend in my calendar! (And I don't expect family obligations to be an obstacle this year either.) Next on the list: Which airport is the best to fly into? And how about "out of," in case I decide to do a 3-way (PDX -> Baltimore/DC area -> Raleigh, NC ->PDX) instead of a simple round trip. Enny suggestions? Genie |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: dick greenhaus Date: 03 Apr 08 - 04:13 PM The big Getaway question is sartorial....Can Kendall top last year's black leather ensemble? |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Marion Date: 03 Apr 08 - 04:49 PM I really hope to make it this year. I've requested to take those dates as my vacation, and could probably trade them away if I don't get the vacation time. I'd probably take the train down, unless I find somebody who wants to car pool down from Ontario. Marion |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: jacqui.c Date: 03 Apr 08 - 05:13 PM Goes well with the black leather Kat. Hope you can make it this year! |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Amos Date: 03 Apr 08 - 07:09 PM I think they still honor American Driver's Licenses, but shots, yeah. They got wolverines, porkypines, bobcats, and dead-eye seagulls. (Never mind gettin' toilet papuh...). A |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Genie Date: 04 Apr 08 - 01:26 AM kat, are you telling me that "firm" and "three-ways" wouldn't have applied to past Getaways? Another bubble burst! (sob) (And what's the black leather about then?) G |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Dani Date: 04 Apr 08 - 06:38 AM Enough of this Maine seagull-poop. The place is ^$ing freezing! IF it weren't for the warmth of our friends there, the place would have shattered off the coast to bob around in the Atlantic for a while before drifting South and melting! The sainted FSGW has finally seen their way clear to creeping South again, so people can sing without the distraction of shivering and chattering teeth! Forget anything you heard about any 3-way at the old Ramblewood, except the number of people in mittens and scarves and blankets you hope sat VERY close to you on benches so you didn't freeze to death after dark. Or the number of people you were sure to wake up with your epithets when the shower water hit you and the piece of saran wrap they covered the stalls with blew up. Dani (not having seen the new place, but looking forward to a bunk without needing 4 down comforters) Check your messages, Skarpi. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Barry Finn Date: 04 Apr 08 - 07:39 AM Hump! Warm weather wimps! Dani, you can sit close to me. Barry |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: kendall Date: 04 Apr 08 - 08:04 AM OK, OK! Sorry I mentioned it.Leave it like it is, I'll manage that 1200 mile trip with my service connected back injury and arthritis. My angina is under control so I probably won't have a heart attack driving through some big city like, Odessa Delaware. Seriously, Dani, the new venue is just great. Plenty of room and WARM enough for wimps who start to shiver when the temp. drops below 90. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: SINSULL Date: 04 Apr 08 - 08:21 AM Kendall and Jacqui have a large enough piece of property for all to camp on. There is a motor home in the driveway for an extra bath as well as a hannaford's with clean rest rooms within walking distance. The men can use the woods. I suggest January 23rd and 24th. That should produce a real taste of Maine and the lobster will have hard shells. What do you say, Jacqui? |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: artbrooks Date: 04 Apr 08 - 09:54 AM Freda, it will be held just outside Baltimore, Maryland, USA, and the website is here. . |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Bill D Date: 04 Apr 08 - 10:03 AM There is a dead link on the FSGW site about the West River page Here is a working one (I hope) |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: kendall Date: 04 Apr 08 - 11:37 AM Last year, Jacqui and I came home via Annapolis on rt 301 up to the New Jersey turnpike. If we go again this year, I'll take the same roads to get there. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: jacqui.c Date: 04 Apr 08 - 12:21 PM Gawd - don't the Old Coot go off on one! Anyone would think that we were going on a wilderness journey although, for a Mainer, I suppose that's what it feels like, leaving Maine. It would serve him right if you all turned up one weekend next summer and camped in the yard. We could have a right good time if you choose the warm weekend - Dani could borrow an L.L.Bean down jacket to keep her warm and I'll have crocheted a few extra afghans for her to snuggle under. Feeding's no problem - we'll just put out the mosquito traps and you can decide if you want a wing or a leg. Freda - does this mean you're thinking of coming over? That really would be the icing on the cake! If you get to the USA a trip to Maine before, or after the Getaway is mandatory - we'll kidnap you if there's no other way to get you here. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: John MacKenzie Date: 04 Apr 08 - 12:53 PM I really want to go this year, but money is very tight now. Giok |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Big Mick Date: 04 Apr 08 - 02:14 PM Great, I'm in. A summer getaway in Maine. What day is summer in Maine this year? Mick |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: kendall Date: 04 Apr 08 - 02:50 PM Giok, money is always "tight" for a Scot. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: John MacKenzie Date: 04 Apr 08 - 02:53 PM Why thanks Kendall, there's nothing like an original quip at the expense of the Scots. and That's nothing like an original quip Cap'n. Giok ¦¬] |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: kendall Date: 04 Apr 08 - 04:22 PM Actually, I prefer "thrifty" to "tight" when describing a Scot. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: John MacKenzie Date: 04 Apr 08 - 04:24 PM As a Mainer, you would of course ;) G |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: MMario Date: 04 Apr 08 - 04:29 PM MOst downeasters refer to the Scots as "Those spendthrifts!" |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: jacqui.c Date: 04 Apr 08 - 04:30 PM Mick - it will come right after Mud Season finishes which, from the look of the weather right now, will probably be around August 31st, the day before Fall starts, so we could be out of luck for Summer this year. As for next year? That's anyone's guess. Care to start a book on it? |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: SINSULL Date: 04 Apr 08 - 04:35 PM Summer fell on the day of the Lobster Boil last year - pure torture for most of us. Would you like me to schedule this year's and so determine the hottest day of the year? We have never been rained out and always sweated our way thru the bugs until the black flies start dive bombing. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: jacqui.c Date: 04 Apr 08 - 04:39 PM And the mosquitoes started biting - that was what drove me and one or two others indoors last year. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: GUEST,Dani Date: 04 Apr 08 - 04:54 PM And exactly WHY IN THE HELL do you lunatics live there?! Be specific. xo Dani |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: ClaireBear Date: 04 Apr 08 - 05:02 PM Boy, Maine just sounds better and better! Jacqui, when you told me I had to come to Maine, I blithely assumed it was a good thing. Now perhaps I should inquire as to your true motivation (but I'll still come, if you still want me). Cheers, C |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: jacqui.c Date: 04 Apr 08 - 06:12 PM I'll let you into the secret, but you must promise not to tell anybody. Maine really is "The Way Life Should Be". Problem is, if too many people get to hear about it they will all want to come and live here and then we'd get overcrowded. So, we just let on that living here is not easy and tell everyone about the downside. That way we can keep it a secret for just those we choose to invite! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: ClaireBear Date: 04 Apr 08 - 06:19 PM Ah, I was hoping that was it. In that light, I am very much looking forward to this year's easterly/downeasterly jaunt -- blackflies, mosquitoes, frostbite, mud, incendiary hot spells, inedible crustacea and all! (Would Maine before Getaway or after be better -- errr, less tortuous? You have all summer to answer that.) Claire |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Bobert Date: 04 Apr 08 - 06:39 PM Well, gol danged... I was thinkin' that a Maine Getaway would be real refreshing... Plus, we wouldn't constantly be tripping over them FSGWer's portable oxegen bottles... You know them folks couldn't find Maine if it was down the hall from their TV rooms... (Now ya' done it, Bobert... This is gonna cost you...) Just ignore this post, please... b;~) |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: kendall Date: 04 Apr 08 - 07:23 PM Dani, my dear, I will be as specific as I can. I live here because I was born here. I was born here because I wanted to be near my Mother. I stay here out of habit. Some other reasons: 1. No earthquakes 2. No tornadoes 3. No brush fires 4. No mudslides. 5. No hurricanes 6. The second lowest crime rate in the country.(Second only to Vermont. A beautiful, civilized state but no lobsters or ocean. 7. No poison snakes, spiders, or scorpions. 8. No dangerous animals. However, the state is getting warmer every year, and it is very hard to buy a car without A/C. I love Maine. It has a certain character that seems to be native to the state. A panache' if you will. Grand state of Maine Proudly we sing To tell your praises to the land To shout your praises til the echos ring Should fate unkind send us to roam The scent of the fragrant pine The tang of the salty sea will call us home. Old Pine Tree state, your woods fields and hills Your lakes, streams and rockbound coast Will ever fill out hearts with thrills And though we seek far and wide Our search will be in vain To find a fairer spot on earth than Maine Maine Maine. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Bill D Date: 04 Apr 08 - 07:58 PM One of those Maniacal songs, I presume? ----------------------------------------------------------- Everyone...DO remember sleeping arangements at this camp are 44.053% UPPER bunk beds! If we get near capacity, decisions must be made. Last year was not a particular problem; but folks who couldn't come in November, and who were ill, and who had to save up money, and who just 'didn't get around to it' are talking about coming this year. This is a camp used largely by Methodist youth, who are assigned rooms and are segregated by sex...with ALL beds used. I believe absolute capacity is...ummm...202? But we have more...ummm...'mature' attendees, many of whom cannot negotiate upper bunks. This may not be an issue, but unlike that last 'cold' camp, which had over 350 'possible' spaces, we have to juggle things here. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: artbrooks Date: 04 Apr 08 - 08:28 PM I spent a v-e-r-y long time in Maine one August weekend...it snowed. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: artbrooks Date: 04 Apr 08 - 08:41 PM Just BTW, Bill...the registration form that the link on the Getaway page leads to is for 2007. I just rejoined via PayPal - can we use the 2007 form to send in a deposit, and how much is the deposit for '08? |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Lonesome EJ Date: 04 Apr 08 - 09:09 PM I've always wanted to do a bicycle tour of the Maine coast. And I'm planning to make the Getaway again. Number 4 for me. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Midchuck Date: 04 Apr 08 - 09:14 PM I don't mind an upper bunk if it doesn't have to be over my wife. She'll kick me, or worse, in the night. I just know she will. Peter |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Bill D Date: 04 Apr 08 - 10:05 PM Artbrooks...I guess Charlie Baum doesn't have the PDF for this year up yet. We usually don't expect money until Summer...July or August or so. Charlie is probably very busy until Passover has....ummm...passed over. Look for news in the next few weeks....I don't think there will be a problem holding off a bit. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: TRUBRIT Date: 04 Apr 08 - 10:36 PM Being a wimp who does not like to rough it, I shall be hoteling again which means whatever bunk I might have used will be available for whomever likes to sleep in wooden bunks with snoring people!!! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: GUEST Date: 04 Apr 08 - 11:49 PM "It has a certain character that seems to be native to the state." I'll say! Bill, sign me up for an upper! It's warmer up there : ) Dani |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Amos Date: 04 Apr 08 - 11:50 PM There's nothing "rough" about a bunk in aheated cabin, Truebrit!! Well, there is the snoring people, but, let's not be too elitist here!! It's like getting married four times over! A |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Genie Date: 05 Apr 08 - 01:16 AM Bill D, you said, "This may not be an issue, but unlike that last 'cold' camp, which had over 350 'possible' spaces, we have to juggle things here." What sorts of things would that be, Bill? And will it be a workshop for us novices? G |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 From: Janie Date: 05 Apr 08 - 01:28 AM Jeez! April 4th and here we are at 100 posts. By the date of the Getaway, this thread will be contending with MOAB! All youse people who keep promising and then not showing up 'cuz life gets in the way - this year, we are holding you to it. Get a life or get rid of the life you got if it ain't gonna let you show up at the mostest, bestest, loveliest, warmest, ...est gathering of people who love to sing and play and flirt, and eat bad food together that ever was. (I'm jealous cuz this is the first time I have been less than certain I can go since the first one I attended.) |
