Subject: RE: FSGW - Setlist for Saturday Night Concert From: Ebbie Date: 20 Oct 05 - 03:39 PM Great idea, thanks. I am discovering that on the minidisc recordings that I made I don't remember as many singers' names as I thought I would. (Hey, they're right in front of me- of course I'll remember who is doing this great song!) In time, I hope other events will be notated. |

Subject: RE: FSGW - Setlists for Getaway Evening Concerts From: Barry Finn Date: 22 Oct 05 - 12:17 AM Finn Tales on Sunday did a net hauling shanty that comes from the manhaden fishing industries off the coasts of Virginia, N & S Carolina & I believe Georgia. The song was written by my brother Chris Dunn, to the tune of the Foggy Dew, and concerned the grave-robbing of the Titanic - 'For Titanic's deceased should be left alone in peace, and may God preserve all those who sailed in her'. The sound engineers, incidentally, we're extraordinarily adept at amplifying Saturday's concert. |

Subject: RE: FSGW - Setlists for Getaway Evening Concerts From: voyager Date: 23 Oct 05 - 09:43 PM It's great to see this setlist getting built. I expect that by the 2006 GetAway we should have filled in most spots from the Sat/Sun(I missed) concert. Can someone hazard a guess for the Dave Diamond/Judy Cook 'Old Fool, Darn Fool' love ballad :^> I'd love to know whose clever pen crafted that song. voyager |
Subject: RE: FSGW - Setlists for Getaway Evening Concerts From: GUEST Date: 23 Oct 05 - 09:54 PM Pretty typical of Roger to leave a BUNCH of details out. |
Subject: RE: FSGW - Setlists for Getaway Evening Concerts From: Charley Noble Date: 24 Oct 05 - 09:09 AM That's almost half the songs identified. Any more clues for those of us trying to make sense of our recordings? Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: FSGW - Setlists for Getaway Evening Concerts From: Tannywheeler Date: 24 Oct 05 - 09:41 AM The "old fool, darn fool" song is usually called "(However many) Nights Drunk". You add up how many (other men's) thingys he finds in places where his (whatever) ought to be and you have the number. I bet no one can put a name to that one, just (maybe) the particular tune they learned, or who first sang the version they heard. I'd be willing to bet it's a real TRAD. |
Subject: RE: FSGW - Setlists for Getaway Evening Concerts From: GUEST,Giok Date: 24 Oct 05 - 10:14 AM I think I sang 'Sky High Joe' a song about Scottish nationalist activities in the 50s but my memories are a joyful jumble. Add that to advancing senility and you have a recipe for a 1st Class Forgettery! Giok |

Subject: RE: FSGW - Setlists for Getaway Evening Concerts From: MMario Date: 25 Oct 05 - 01:27 PM charmion's was an instumental - and I think she said what it was over on the remembrences thread - just a sec..... yup - she says there it was "a 6/8 tune called "Reunion" " |

Subject: RE: FSGW - Setlists for Getaway Evening Concerts From: Charmion Date: 25 Oct 05 - 02:37 PM Close, but only half the cigar. My number with Mia Boynton was actually a two-tune set. The first was "Le 6/8 de Alain Rivard", and the second was "The Reunion" by Russ Barenberg. The instrument I was playing was an octave mandolin. Edmund's song was "River Driving on the Sagandog", to which he had just added a brand new verse. |
Subject: RE: FSGW - Setlists for Getaway Evening Concerts From: CET Date: 26 Oct 05 - 07:10 PM A few details about my song: the title is "River Driving". It was collected by Jeanne Robert Foster and published in 1916 in a book of poems she had collected and written, called Neighbors of Yesterday. The tune is by Dan Berggren, 1990. I learned it from the singing of Jeff Warner on his new (excellent) CD, "Jolly Tinker". Charmion didn't know the song before I sang it to her a few times after lunch on the day of the concert. Edmund |
Subject: RE: FSGW - Setlists for Getaway Evening Concerts From: voyager Date: 26 Oct 05 - 08:02 PM Thanks to Judy Cook & Dave Diamond for delivering this bit of hilarity with such musical authority (alliteration alert!) 'N' Nights Drunk voyager |
Subject: RE: FSGW - Setlists for Getaway Evening Concerts From: treaties1 Date: 26 Oct 05 - 08:31 PM My song in spot No 19 Sunday was "Thousands or more" an old traditional English song, listed in Mudcat as "Sorrows away" A superb Getaway and great to see all the names and titles being linked together as there was so much incredible talent my brain went into overload and remembered far too little Thanks everyone Theresa |
Subject: RE: FSGW - Setlists for Getaway Evening Concerts From: Charley Noble Date: 26 Oct 05 - 10:46 PM Thanks, Theresa, and now I can nail another Mudcat name with a voice. Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: FSGW - Setlists for Getaway Evening Concerts From: Ferrara Date: 26 Oct 05 - 11:18 PM Well voyager, that is one version of "Five Nights Drunk," but it is a long, long way from the version that Dave and Judy sang! Theirs was a bit more mainstream, shall we say. :-) The version you linked to is about 10 times as raunchy as any I've ever heard. Wonder where it came from? Maybe a fraternity house.... There are so many versions of the song that (if my memory isn't failing me again) FSGW's own Joe Hickerson did his doctoral thesis (in folklore) on the history, variants, etc of "Five Nights Drunk." |
