Can anyone recall a Bud Fisher from the late 1980s. I am told he lived in Broadstairs and whose repertoire included humorous songs. Was that his real name, and what did he actually sing?

I think this was the elderly guy who used to come to the lunchtime sings in the Neptune during Folk Week. I believe he originally came from Cornwall, as I remember him showing great interest in a number of the Cornish songs we sang. I think, too, that he was still around in the '90s, but then time seems to go so fast...!

I really can't remember what he used to sing, but yes, I do remember the songs being gently humorous. If it is him, the person to contact is Pete Collins, who used to run the lunchtime sessions.

Thanks Barbara, that sounds promising. If Pete Collins reads this, any chance of meeting up at the Vine at Tenterden next Tuesday?

My informarion comes from Gavin Atkin, who was tasked with acting as Bud's chauffeur at the English Country Music weekend held at Frittenden in 1988. He told me 'he sang a few popular songs from the early part of the last century, and quite a lot from the Great War, many of which were bawdy. I particularly remember liking the one beseeching people to 'Save Our Souls, Save Arseholes', but I couldn't sing it now. Maybe Chris (Warner of the dance band Florida) could'.

Yes, that's the one that Tom remembers!

I don't think Pete reads Mudcat - if you were a Mudcat member, I could PM you with Pete's e-mail address or phone no. It's easy enough to register.

Or go to our website here
and e-mail me through that.

Just for the record:

What a wonderful fish the Sole is.
What wonderful fish are Sole's.
Though I'm glad to relate,
I'm partial to skate,
When served on a plate with rissoles.
What a wonderful fish the Sole is.
Like Mackerel they swim round in shoals.
But the finest of fish, ever served in a dish
ARE SOLE'S, ARE SOLE'S, ARE SOLE'S
