Subject: Lyr Req: Lazy Brown Bear From: GUEST,Stacy - email to Joe Offer Date: 22 Dec 17 - 01:43 PM I am trying to find what Silver Burdett Grade School music book from the 1950-1960's this song is in. The lyrics are as follows: With a bend and a stretch and a yawn, Brown Bear woke up in the spring. With a bend and a stretch and a yawn, Brown Bear was hungry for anything. Strawberries, _____, ____, fruit? and a golden pear. Brown bear was hungry, hungry as a bear. Thank you, Stacy |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Lazy Brown Bear From: Joe Offer Date: 22 Dec 17 - 01:46 PM Hi, Stacy - The name of the song is "Lazy Brown Bear - A Song Story," words and music by Daniel Hooley. It's on page 128 of the 1966 school songbook titled "Music for Young Americans: Discovering Music," published by the American Book Company. It's the second-grade volume of the series. Quite possibly, it's also in earlier editions. We have fairly complete indexes of the Silver Burdett school songbooks, and I doubt that you'll find the song there. Here's the Google Books listing: https://books.google.com/books?id=MhIjAAAAMAAJ&q=%22with+a+bend%22+yawn+bear&dq=%22with+a+bend%22+yawn+bear Unfortunately, none of us at Mudcat really liked the books from the American Book Company, so we did not collect them. You can buy a copy of the book from ABE Books: >https://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?kn=%22Music+for+Young+Americans%3A+Discovering+Music%22&sts=t Here's my original Google search, which gives snippets of the song: >https://www.google.com/search?q=%22with+a+bend%22+yawn+bear&source=lnms&tbm=bks&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjSz6iYmp7YAhULRCYKHemtCNkQ_AUIECgB&biw=1920&bih=949 I've posted your request at the Mudcat Cafe. Maybe somebody will answer in the next few days. Watch this link: https://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=163328&messages=1 Hope that helps. Joe Offer, Music Editor, The Mudcat Cafe Folk Music Forum |

Today I was riding my mountain bike in the mountains and this came back to me. The bears are everywhere this year lol. With a bend and a stretch and a yawn, brown bear woke up in the spring. With a bend and a stretch and a yawn, brown bear was hungry for anything. Strawberries, cherries and honey and berries… |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Lazy Brown Bear From: GUEST,Justin "Good Mr Turtle" Date: 02 Mar 26 - 05:09 PM I've successfully been able to purchase one of the books.usic for Young Americans Volume 2. They pop up occasionally on eBay, and I was able to snag one in pretty good condition. Brown Bear had illustrations, the music, and lyrics. https://ebay.us/m/7A0ugV For years, I've been hunting down this song because of its family ties to me. My great-grandmother, who just passed, would sing, "Lazy Brown Bear" song to me as a lullaby. When my daughter was born, after a difficult c-section, this song was the only thing I could think of. Therefore, this being the first song my daughter heard, as well as a way to remember my granny, I'm desperately looking for the record/a digital copy of the official audio from the vinyl that came with the book. I'm pretty close to finding it and I'll send it if I do. |
