I have the words, but could use some help with the chords. I was asked to play at a high school peace rally and would like to do this one.

Here's one version.

Allan

title:There but for Fortune}
{st:Phil Ochs}
[C]Show me the [Fm]prison, [C]show me the [Fm]jail,
[C]Show me the [Am]prisoner who's [D]life has gone st[G]ale,
And I'll [C]show you a [Am]young man with so [F]many reasons [Dm]why
There[Em] but for fortu[Am]ne, go you o[D]r go I [G]-- you and I.[C]

Show me the alley, show me the train,
Show me the hobo who sleeps out in the rain,
And I'll show you a young man with so many reasons why
There but for fortune, go you or go I -- you and I.

Show me the whisky stains on the floor,
Show me the dunkard as he stumbles out the door,
And I'll show you a young man with so many reasons why
There but for fortune, go you or go I -- you and I.

Show me the famine, show me the frail
Eyes with no future that show how we failed
And I'll show you the children with so many reasons why
There but for fortune, go you or I.

Show me the country where bombs had to fall,
Show me the ruins of buildings once so tall,
And I'll show you a young land with so many reasons why
There but for fortune, go you or go I -- you and I.
You and I,
There but for fortune, go you or go I -- you and I.

I always played the "D" chords as DM. Better musical sense. If you are in doubt check out the Phil Ochs web site. I have tried to make a link but it didn't work. The web adress is: www.cs.pdx.edu/~trent/ochs .
Good luck that web site is a very useful resource to have!

I've just checked my old song book and I used different chords when I used to sing it - about 100 years ago. (Well, almost 40 years.)

(A)Show me the (A-aug)prison, (A)Show me the (A-aug)jail.
(A)Show me the (F#min)prisoner whose (B)life has gone (E)stale
And (A)I'll show you (F#min)young man
With so (D)many reasons (Bmin)why
(C#min)There but for (F#min)fortune go (B)you or (E)I
There go (A)I.....(A-aug.....A......A-aug)

I also added a couple of verses but they're rather dated now.

Show me the city divided in two.
Show me the people with no freedom to go through...

Show me the black child, standing apart,
Show me the senselessness when prejudices start....

Yes, OK, that was a bit of a mouthful but it worked at the time!
Robyn
