I don't think this has been mentioned in the forum. Someone kindly drew attention to this in the oldtime music newsgroup. 'Folk-Songs of America: The Robert Winslow Gordon Collection 1922-1932' LP has been reissued in its entirety - songs, notes, texts - in celebration of the 75 anniversary of the Archive of Folk Culture. To access the songs, click on 'Annotations and Texts' [Rosenberg], then on the actual numbers A1 through to B8 for individual tracks, texts and notes. The album includes Fred Lewey's performance of 'Old Ninety Seven'.

Stewie,

That's marvelous. I'd completely missed it.
All the best to the two of you way out and over there.
I sure wish I had found a way to your contry back when I had the energy.

Art

I wasn't aware of the LP when it was first released some 25 years ago. It is great to have access to it and informative notes. All the best to you and Carol. I see on the little screen that things are a might cold in your neck of the woods - it's bloody hot and humid here.

Great, indeed. Stewie, thanks a lot for the news. I've been searching for the LP for years in vain, though I have Gordon's mimeographed book: Folk-Songs of America (National Service Bureau, 1938), and Debora Kodish's Good Friends and Bad Enemies: Robert Winslow Gordon and the Study of American Folksong (U. of Illinois Press, 1986).

This reissue is really good news. But better news WOULD BE that the Library of Congress has issued, for the first time, Gordon's phonographic collection of sea shanties made on the West Coast in the very early twenties (comparable to James M. Carpenter's East Coast/British recordings) or, failing that, has FOUND the accompanying notebooks of texts, which, last time I checked into this, seemed to have gone missing.
