I've got a song banging around in my head trying to get itself written that has to do with the "camp followers" or "soiled doves" from the U.S. Civil War. The problem is I don't know whether it's something I came up with or if it's something I overheard at some time (it's happened to me before). I've checked digitrad for any reference to "soiled doves" and nothing turns up. I know there are many songs about tramps, hookers, and the like, but does anyone know of any song about the "soiled doves"?

Hi, Chief Chaos.

I know the expression "soiled dove" as a euphemism for "prostitute", not "camp follower" -- of course, it was perfectly possible for the army's tail to include a fair few virtuous women.

Google "soiled doves" and a lot of information is available, particularly about soiled doves of the old west which is where I believe the expression came from.

You may also find a few hits at Google for a kind of architecture common some years ago in the US. Ornate homes with lots of "foo-foo" ornamentation. It's a (degenerate?) subclass, as I recall, of the more general "painted ladies" grouping. Even architects (or at least architectural historians) may have a sense of humor...(?)

And there seems to be a band called that too.
