Subject: Want to download song Chastity Belt From: Reiver 2 Date: 29 Sep 04 - 08:04 PM Hello from somone who has been long (too long) absent from the Mudcat. There's a new Irish/Scottish band near here and I'm trying to teach them the song "Chastity Belt". (OK, I know it's not really an Irish or Scottish song - at least I don't think it is - but it COULD be!) Reiver 1 and I used to sing it years ago when we were performing in British Columbia, but I have only a poor quality cassette tape of the song done by Rory and Alex McEwan and Caroline and Dick Farina. Reiver 1 and I sang their version although we dirtied up the chorus lines and sang our reverse-bowdlerized version on occasion. (If anyone is interested I can post that version here.) To my question. (Finally!) Does anyone know where I can download a version of this song (preferably, that version) so that I can burn it onto a CD for this band (The Knockabouts) to listen to and learn? Any help would be appreciated. Reiver 2 |

Subject: RE: Want to download song Chastity Belt From: John in Brisbane Date: 29 Sep 04 - 09:09 PM I learned this song from Michael (and Jill) Edmends - surname spelling is suspect - an ex film editor who worked on the original 'Thunderbirds' series. I lost track of him some years ago when he moved from Brisbane back to England to open a recycled bookshop somewhere on the South coast. Does anyone know his current whereabouts? There is a MIDI of Chastity Belt HERE. All you need to play it is Windows Media Player. The song of course was written in recent times, but is a great tongue in cheek replica of the tradition. Regards, John |
Subject: RE: Want to download song Chastity Belt From: MMario Date: 29 Sep 04 - 09:12 PM I din't see the reversed bowlderized version offer. of course! post! post! |
Subject: RE: Want to download song Chastity Belt From: Reiver 2 Date: 29 Sep 04 - 09:14 PM Thanks for the offer, Mike. My recording of it is not so poor in quality that they couldn't learn it from that. The problem is that no one in the group has a cassette player (darn younger generation!) so I need to get it onto a CD if possible. I can record a CD to a cassette tape, but not the other way around. If you or anyone knows how to get a cassette recording onto a CD, that would work, but I don't know how, or don't have the right equipment to do it. But, I appreciate the offer. Reiver 2 |
Subject: ADD: Chastity Belt (unbowdlerized) From: Reiver 2 Date: 29 Sep 04 - 10:05 PM M. Mario, that clip is good although the singer uses a different style than what I'm used to. Too bad it's only the first verse. John, I have the words. All I can play from the MIDI is the one-finger piano tune which is slightly different from what I learned. Here's the "reverse-bowdlerized" version Reiver 1 and I put together: CHASTITY BELT 1. Oh, say, gentle maiden, may I be your lover? Condemn me no longer to mourn and to weep. Struck down like a hart I lie wounded and fainting, Oh, let down your drawbridge, I'll enter your keep. Enter your keep, nonny, nonny Horny old creep, nonny, nonny He'd asked another, but the price was too steep. 2. Alas, gallant errant, I am not a maiden. I'm married to Sir Oswald, that cunning old gelt. He's gone to the wars for a twelve-month or longer, And taken the key to my chastity belt. Chastity belt, nonny, nonny Cast iron and felt, nonny, nonny She can't get out of her chastity belt. 3. Fear not, gentle lady, for I know a locksmith. To his forge we will go, on his door we will knock. And try to avail us of his specialized knowledge To see if he's able to un-pick your lock. Unpick your lock, nonny, nonny Sounds like a crock, nonny, nonny Will he be able to un-pick her lock? 4. Alas sir and madame, to help I'm unable. My technical knowledge is of no avail. I can't find the secret to your combination, The cunning old basket has fitted a Yale. Fitted a Yale, nonny, nonny He'll get no tail, nonny, nonny Senile old locksmith can't un-pick a Yale. 5. I'm back from the wars with bad news of disaster. A terrible mishap I have to impart. While my ship was a-passing the Straits of Gibralter I overboard dropped the key, sad is my heart. Sad is his heart, nonny, nonny Clumsy old fart, nonny, nonny He overboard dropped it, he's not very smart. 6. Alas and alack, I am locked up forever. Then up spoke a page boy, saying, Leave this to me. If you will allow me to enter your chamber, I'll open it up with my duplicate key. Duplicate key, nonny, nonny It worked for he, nonny, nonny Saturday nights with his duplicate key. We always sang the husband as a bit effeminate pronouncing the letter r as a w, and the page boy with a prounounced stutter, etc. It was lots of fun. It's better with a band of 4 or 5 members, including one female, with each taking the part od a different character, and the whole group singing the "Chorus" (last 3 lines of each verse). Reiver 2 |

Subject: RE: Want to download song Chastity Belt From: greg stephens Date: 30 Sep 04 - 05:35 AM Yes, who did write this? It must be pretty recent. When can we date it to?Can our more aged members say when and where they first heard it? that might help to track its origins. I only came to know it in 1962ish,but it's obviously a bit older than that. I've never heard anyone express a theory about who wrote it. Its style suggests an English university post WWII,perhaps?? |
Subject: RE: Want to download song Chastity Belt From: Leadfingers Date: 30 Sep 04 - 05:56 AM As I understand it this song was written by the late Theo Johnson ,who ran a Folk Club in Twickenham in the sixties . |
Subject: RE: Want to download song Chastity Belt From: greg stephens Date: 30 Sep 04 - 06:10 AM Leadfingers: there is an extensive article by John Mehlberg(sorry cant do clickies, but it's easy to find with google) on the origins of this song, but it comes to no particular conclusion, as far as I can see. It doesnt believe the Theo Johnson theory. Points out that the song was spread by the cast recording of the South African revue "Wait a Minim"(1962ish?). The song is tracked back to the mid 50's in either the RAF or Oxford Univerity(which is where I first heard it, but not till 62).. |
Subject: RE: Want to download song Chastity Belt From: gecko Date: 30 Sep 04 - 06:21 AM I've got an album from 1978 by Jasper Carrott wherein he does horrible things to the song which he renames 'Bastity Chelt'. The song is attributed as traditional, but remember he does come from Brummagem so he probably won't know his arse from his elbow - as they say! And before outraged Brummies heap upon my head - I'm one of you from way back so I'm allowed! |
Subject: RE: Want to download song Chastity Belt From: GUEST,MikeofNorthumbria sans cookie Date: 30 Sep 04 - 08:57 AM Hi Greg & others, Here's my 2p worth on the subject. This song was certainly composed before 1960, probably by one or more Oxford undergraduates. Certainly, it was already current amongst members of the Heritage Society when I joined in 1960. Eric Winter learned it in 1962 from me and Bob Pierce (via Jim Basset), and printed it in his "Sing!" magazine, after which it diffused rapidly through the folk club scene. In the same year Rory & Alex MacEwan, Dick Farina and Carolyn Hester gave it even wider publicity in their Edinburgh Festival Folk Revue (extracts from which were shown on national TV). Rory, who was at Cambridge in the late '50s may have got it from Eric, or have learned it from the original source at one of the annual Oxford/Cambridge singarounds. The song was also sung in the Anglo-South African stage show, "Wait a Minim" which featured (among others)Andrew Tracy and Jeremy Taylor. Either (or both) of whom may have picked up the song while they were at Oxford in the '50s - or possibly even written it themselves. Anyone out there got any further information? Wassail! |

Subject: RE: Want to download song Chastity Belt From: greg stephens Date: 30 Sep 04 - 09:11 AM this song, as has been pointed out, lends itself to being sung by a number of people representing the different characters. I have a tape lying about somewhere, recorded in Oxford c1963, performed by our very own Mike from Northumbria(who has just posted to this thread) and McGrath of Harlow(who probably soon will). Plus Tony Rose, plus Naomi Cohen and Phil Heycock( I have no idea what happened to the last two). It is very strange, the total lack of convincing stories as to who wrote it.The song became so popular, you'ld think whoever was responsible would have gone round boasting about it. Unlesss, of course, they had by then become a very puritanical clergyman or something(now, that might explain it). |
Subject: RE: Want to download song Chastity Belt From: pavane Date: 30 Sep 04 - 01:13 PM Words - should be Cunning old Celt, not gelt, I think. I have a tape somewhere of Diz Disley singing it in the early 1970's |
Subject: RE: Want to download song Chastity Belt From: Reiver 2 Date: 30 Sep 04 - 01:17 PM Thanks for your comments especially, Mike of Northumbria, with the reference to the McEwan/Farina performance. I heard it on a radio broadcast in Kamloops, British Columbia. It was a station playing folk songs and as I remember they played a recording of the song being sung at the Edinburgh Festival. The annnouncer gave the names of the performers at the end of the song. On my tape he clearly refers to "Carolyn and Dick Farina." Did Dick and Carolyn get married at some point? I'd be interested in who wrote it and when, also, but it looks like my original request for information on how to download it and burn a CD has gotten lost in the shuffle. Can anyone help me with that? Reiver 2 |
Subject: RE: Want to download song Chastity Belt From: Reiver 2 Date: 30 Sep 04 - 06:26 PM I had another thought. Does anyone know if a recording was made of the Edinburgh Festival Folk Review when the McEwan/Farina group sang this song and, if so, where I might access it? As I said in my last post I first heard it played over a radio station, so there must have been a recording of the Festival. I'm not sure what year it was that they sang the song there. It was probably in the mid to late 1970s that I heard it over the radio. Reiver 2 |
Subject: RE: Want to download song Chastity Belt From: PennyBlack Date: 30 Sep 04 - 06:59 PM I have a "jotter" copy I made at school c1959/60 of the words (I reckon Celt as well)- if you don't get a copy of the song we're in the process of recording another CD at the moment "Penny Black with a Bear Behind" and it's one of the songs down on the list (Not sure how we'll get the female voice - either two bricks, some computer trickery - or maybe Rusty would like to guest on the CD?)- when it's recorded we'll post a MP3 copy to our soundclick site so you can download it. Used to love doing the song along with Eileen & Simon (he's a bit too big to be the pageboy now!) and remember someone doing a "Spooner" version of it at Bollington one year when we went to see Simon play - anyone got a copy of that version? Subject: Lyr Add: CHASTITY BELT From: John M. Date: 01 Oct 04 - 11:50 AM Below is my article on the song "Chastity Belt". If you sing the song, please email me at mudcat5.20.jpm21@neverbox.com. I would like to get a recording of you, over the phone, singing the song. I need a couple of field recordings to fill out my commercial examples of the song. The earliest I could trace the song is 1956/57 at an RAF party. But it may be as early as WWII but I would need some confirmation from ephemera songbooks of that era. If you know of any other recordings of this song or have more info, please feel free to email me at mudcat5.20.jpm21@neverbox.com. Sincerely, John Mehlberg Chastity Belt "Chastity Belt" enjoyed some popularity among rugby players in the 1960's & at folk festivals in the UK and it still is sung by many people in the USA & UK but primarily amongst the Society of Creative Anachronism (SCA) and Renaissance Fair (Ren-Fair) groups. I have one informant who learned this song in 1956/57 at an RAF party before he went down to Oxford. He taught the song to Andrew Tracey who incorporated it into a musical called WAIT A MINIM!. This musical, through the cast recordings & world tours, helped disperse the song throughout the English speaking countries during the 1960's. Which accounts for the world wide scope of this bawdy song. Throughout the 1960's this song was sung in rugby clubhouses along with the more traditional songs like "Dina". The song after the early 1970's seem quite tame in comparison to what was going on and it fell out of favor with rugby players. An early claim to authorship of "Chastity Belt" from the New York program for the musical WAIT A MINIM! which attributes the song to Jeffrey Smith. [See: http://users.bestweb.net/~foosie/minim2.htm under "Sir Oswalde Sodde"]. "Sir Oswalde Sodde" is the same song as "Chastity Belt". The musical opened 12th of January 1962 in Johannesburg, South Africa. Andrew Tracey who acted in this musical and was intimately involved in the production denies that this song was written specifically for WAIT A MINIM! but he remembers learning the song in the late 1950's from Alan Rosenthal (2). If you have more info on Jeffrey Smith and the writing of WAIT A MINIM!, please email me at mudcat5.20.jpm21@neverbox.com
"MikeofNorthumbria" in the mudcat.org forum archive remembers this song from the early sixties. He says: The song was current among folkies at Oxford when I was there in the early '60s, but nobody seemed certain of the author's name. I think it had been composed a year or two earlier, as a comedy sketch for a student stage show. At a very convivial party, I scribbled down the words for Eric Winter, then Editor of the British folk music magazine, Sing!. After obtaining the music from my mate, Bob Pierce, Eric published the song in Sing!, in the spring or summer of 1962. Through that - or some other - channel, the song reached Rory McEwan, who incorporated it into the folk music programme he put on at the 1962 Edinburgh Festival, along with his brother Alex, and Carolyn Hester and Dick Farina. Since then, it seems to have gone around the world. If the real author is out there, will he or she please own up. The Sing! magazine issue that has 'Chastity Belt' is Volume 6 No. 10 [June 1962]. If you have a copy of this Sing! magazine, please contact me. I have reports of some people learning this song directly from one of the WAIT A MINIM! cast recordings, others learned it from Sing! magazine and some individuals learning the song as undergraduates at Oxford in the late fifties. According to David Marks, who used to sing in WAIT A MINIM!, "Chastity Belt" had become "...a very popular song on the local [Johannesburg, South Africa] folk-circuit back in the early to mid 60's. There is a version on one of the Minim albums & we have many versions by various folk singers, recorded at the Nite Beat & the Troubadour, which, incidentally was turned into a sort-of acoustic Folk Revue Coffee Bar in the early 70's & renamed - The Chastity Belt." [Quote from a private email]. Bibliography & Discography: Sing! magazine Volume 6 No. 10 [June 1962] edited by Eric Winter. Rory and Alex McEwen and Carolyne and Dick Farina recorded "Chastity Belt" and issued it on a 1963 mono EP called "Four For Fun" on the Scottish Waverley Records label (see here: http://www.richardandmimi.com/fourforfun.html ). They met in August 1962 at the Edinb urgh Festival. It is reportedly on an EP called "In a Folk Mood" - recorded by Graham Kilsby issued the late 1960s (Saydisc, Specialised Recordings Ltd, Meeting House, Frenchay, Bristol). From sleeve notes: "... he [Graham Kilsby] is a very popular entertainer in this capacity as can be heard from CHASTITY BELT: a neo-Elizabethan song recorded live at the Bristol Troubadour Club. Graham's several voices are joined by Alun Jones-12 string guitar, Patrick Small-guitar and vocal, Fred Wedlock-bicycle horn and frenzied applause..." In addition to the above records, Steve Benbow reportedly has a version on his 1967 Decca record "Of Situations and Predicaments", LK 4881. There is also a spoonerized parody of the song "Chastity Belt" called "Bastity Chelt". "Bastity Chelt" is remembered as being performed at the folk club at Turville near Stockenchurgh on the Bucks Oxfordshire border. Sometime in the late 1960s. (See Mudcat link above). A version of this song was recorded by Jasper Carrott. If you know of other recordings of "Bastity Chelt", please email me at mudcat5.20.jpm21@neverbox.com. The song "Chastity Belt" can be found in the 1967 book Why Was He Born So Beautiful and other Rugby Songs pgs. 52-53 collected by Harry Morgan. The song "Chastity Belt" is sung on the 1970 record "Medical Students Sing Rugby Songs" -- the sixth & final record in the Sportsdisc rugby series produced by Harry Morgan the compiler of the 1967 Rugby Songs book. The song can be found on the Molly Bennett tape ($11 w/S&H) & book ($7 w/S&H) entitled "The Bawdy Beautiful" [see here: http://www.random-factors.com/folkfilk.htm ]. Order by following the link or by snail mail by sending a check to Molly Bennett, 12199 E. Arizona Dr, Aurora CO 80012. Molly Bennett "learned it ca. 1988 from a fellow performer at the Colorado Ren Fair who billed herself as Queen of Tarts (real name unknown)." [Private email] "Chastity Belt" is in Bawdy Ballads and Dirty Ditties of the Wartime R.A.F. pg. 181. Curiously, the Bawdy Ballads editor, Harold Bennett, thinks that this song is a WWII era song. The song, entitled "Sir Oswald Sodde (The Chastity Belt)", is sung by Robin James on her 2002 "Songs of Love, Longing & Levity" CD. (Listen to the song & order here: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/robinjames ) If you know of any other recordings of this song or have more info, please feel free to email me at mudcat5.20.jpm21@neverbox.com. Sincerely, John Mehlberg (1) According to Peter Kennedy at Folktrax, this was composed by Theo Johnson (see: http://www.folktrax.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/menus/search%20for%20titles_ce_che.htm) for Cambridge Footlights Revue in the 1950's (?). Please email Peter Kennedy <peter (at) folktrax.freeserve.co.uk> if you know the whereabouts of Theo Johnson. Peter is unsure who told him "Chastity Belt" was written by Theo Johnson but he believes that he was told this in the mid-1960's. If you have more information about Theo Johnson, Cambridge Footlights Revue or the composition of "Chastity Belt", please email me at mudcat5.20.jpm21@neverbox.com< (2) Andrew Tracey [forwarded by_____ ] wrote: No, we certainly did not write Sir Oswald Sodde, and I don't know who did. It was being sung by many people around the time I was at Oxford in the late 50s. Your correspondent obviously does not know how old the song is. I have a feeling I learned it from my Oxford friend Alan Rosenthal, now Professor of Film at Hebrew University of Jerusalem. If you feel up to it you could write to him, saying it was me who put you onto him... his email is mstomiya (at) mscc.huji.ac.il Alan Rosenthal says that Andrew Tracey did in fact learn "Chastity Belt" from him. So far it looks like the late 1950's the song was being sung at Oxford. I have tried to contact the producers & cast of WAIT A MINIM! to see if they know of if Jeffrey Smith derived the song from another source or if he wrote it himself. I have heard nothing back from them.

You really have done your homework on this one! Your informative posting has jogged my faint and fast-fading memories of that era. I don't recall ever meeting Alan Rosenthal, and I'm almost certain that he had left Oxford before I arrived. However, I do remember senior members of the Heritage club mentioning him as a significant figure in previous years. I also think that one of them once told me he learned "The Chastity Belt" from Alan. Whether Alan composed it, or simply passed it on, I cannot say. The witnesses who could give a definite answer to this question are few in number, and widely scattered. (And for all I know, some may no longer be above ground.) But if anyone following this thread can contact one of the people listed below, then they might be able to give us an answer. I do know that Rosalind Lee, Jan Dawson, Anne West, Peter Lobbenberg, Ian Stuart, Richard Valentine, Gary James and Cliff Henty were all active in the Heritage club before 1960. If any of them - or any of their friends - are out there reading this thread, then perhaps they could help us solve the mystery? Wassail! |
