Subject: Rick's New CD Escapes. From: Rick Fielding Date: 01 Sep 99 - 01:14 PM Well, since Jeri let the (mud)cat out of the bag, I'd better do the birth announcement. The CD that I've been working on over the last few months is indeed about to see the light of day. It's called "This One's The Dreamer" on Borealis Records, and is a collection of old, new, and a couple of original songs. For anyone reasonably new to the "Cat", the instrumental "Catspaw's Rag" is indeed in honour of our resident intergalactic sage. I've been trying for an hour to not screw up the URLs for Borealis, Folk-Legacy (who'll also be carrying it) and my own home page. T'aint no use. Nuthin' works! Tryin' to work the HTML language brings on the same anxiety attacks I used to get before Algebra class! I've asked "catter" Tony Burns if he'll kindly guide anyone who wants the CD in the right direction, and hopefully the info will appear in this space in a few hours. Oh, boy, would I rather be singin' and playin' than trying to mess with computer stuff! Thanks Rick |

Subject: RE: Rick's New CD Escapes. From: Jeri Date: 01 Sep 99 - 01:39 PM I'm going to go have a look at FR/FB website, but to simplify:
Rick's Home Page Found an on-line Canadian music mag in the proces of looking for Borealis. It's PenguinEggs |
Subject: RE: Rick's New CD Escapes. From: Tony Burns Date: 01 Sep 99 - 01:52 PM Happy to help Rick. and the new and improved Rick Fielding site (It's still under construction and doesn't yet have information on the new CD but there's lots of other cool stuff about Rick) |
Subject: RE: Rick's New CD Escapes. From: Peter T. Date: 01 Sep 99 - 02:17 PM Congratulations on the new baby, from someone who has watched the expectant father from the annex to the waiting room. I think the first video off the album (the one with the mudwrestling scene between Ginger Spice and Alanis Morrisette refereed by the Rankin Family, and you in your Roberta Delmore outfit) is pretty special too. yours, Peter T. |

I already told Rick how happy I am for him that the new CD is finished......he just "loves" that post production stuff............But again, Congrats my friend and thankyou! When is Sandy going to have this available BTW??? catspaw, the ragged one |
Subject: RE: Rick's New CD Escapes. From: KathWestra Date: 01 Sep 99 - 03:59 PM Congratulations, Papa! Can't wait to hear the real thing. Rick performed a number of the songs from the new CD at his recent concert in Washington, DC, for the Folklore Society, and I can tell you this is going to be one heckuva recording. (The title song is A+++. Haven't heard the Catspaw Rag yet, but I'm sure it's worthy of its author and its namesake.) I'm in line for this one as soon as it's for sale. Way to go, Rick! Kath |
Subject: RE: Rick's New CD Escapes. From: Rick Fielding Date: 01 Sep 99 - 04:47 PM Whew! You better believe I get stressed out with the bizness end of it. Borealis is sending a bunch of CDs to Sandy this week. They don't appear to have anything about the album on their website yet, but that's probably because I've been late in getting some info to them. Rick |
Subject: RE: Rick's New CD Escapes. From: Art Thieme Date: 01 Sep 99 - 04:58 PM Say, Rick, Congratulations!!!! Your last one never did get here so I'm hoping for better results when I order this one. All the best. Sell a million of 'em! Art |

Subject: RE: Rick's New CD Escapes. From: Sandy Paton Date: 01 Sep 99 - 05:42 PM We'll fly it as soon as we have it in hand, Rick. Gotta send one down to dgl for scanning, etc. Looking forward to hearing it our-own-selves. I'll haul a batch to the Getaway, too! But don't wait till then to order your copy, folks. Sanil-mail still works. Art: Is it true that you never got a copy of Lifeline,? I'll get one off to you pronto. Wind up the Victrola! Sandy |

Subject: RE: Rick's New CD Escapes. From: Guy Wolff Date: 01 Sep 99 - 06:20 PM Congratulations On the Cd <<>>I went to your site...Nice looking banjo as well!!!! All the best Guy |
Subject: RE: Rick's New CD Escapes. From: Rick Fielding Date: 02 Sep 99 - 01:36 AM OK..the cover. Well I had this idea see? I'd been browsing the Cistine Chapel website and thought "Hey, this L.D. Vinci guy is some kind of painter. With a bit of luck he could go places". Then I thought about that C.F. Martin guy, and figured he could use a plug to help sell some of those 0-18 guitars. Well when neither one was lookin, I asked Mudcatter Paul Mills (album designer, hot picker, engineer, and ham sandwich maker) to grab one of those guitars and stick it in God's hand. I figured after buggin' Him with a million questions all these years, He'd understand. After all, even though I'm still pretty confused about religions in general, I DO sing a lot of Gospel songs! Thanks for the nice words. Rick |
Subject: RE: Rick's New CD Escapes. From: Peter T. Date: 02 Sep 99 - 08:33 AM Rick, you are still under the delusion that the Sistine Ceiling was done by Leonardo da Vinci. Can nothing cure this? yours, Peter T. |

Subject: RE: Rick's New CD Escapes. From: Rick Fielding Date: 02 Sep 99 - 11:42 AM Thank you Peter. As you are the first to point out this (seeming) discrepancy, your free album will await your visit tonight. There are a couple of others floating around, tucked within the grooves or the verbiage, that once discovered will also result in a freebie. Rick (who loved the way the Beatles used to hide silly things in albums) |
Subject: RE: Rick's New CD Escapes. From: dick greenhaus Date: 02 Sep 99 - 11:53 AM To all and (especially) sundry- If you order the CD through Mudcat, Mudcat gets a piece of the action. A pasinless way to help support us. |
Subject: RE: Rick's New CD Escapes. From: bbc Date: 02 Sep 99 - 12:30 PM I'm confused, Dick. I looked under "Shop" & under "Support the Mudcat", but I don't see any way to order Rick's cd. Also, I thought we had links to Camsco & Folk Legacy. Am I missing something? bbc (trying to support Mudcat) |
Subject: RE: Rick's New CD Escapes. From: Lonesome EJ Date: 02 Sep 99 - 01:18 PM Does God ever break a string in the middle of La Bamba ? And Peter, it wasn't Michelangelo that did the ceiling, it was his cousin Paco Angelo. Michel did the excruciatingly tedious trimwork around the edges. Congrats to Rick on completing another CD, and one that I look forward to adding to my collection of Fielding masterpieces in the near future. LEJ |
Subject: RE: Rick's New CD Escapes. From: Marion Date: 02 Sep 99 - 04:27 PM Congratulations Rick! Is there a cassette version for the diehards among us? Or do I have to bootleg somebody else's copy of the CD? Just kidding, of course I would never do that, unless it was from somebody who I knew had too much money. Actually I met a great guitarist/songwriter that way - I copied her band's CD then contacted her to explain that I didn't want to rip her off and offered to send her a check, and now we're friends. Honesty does pay off every now and then. Marion |
Subject: RE: Rick's New CD Escapes. From: Paul Mills Date: 02 Sep 99 - 09:30 PM Sorry for the misinformation on Rick's cover. Here's the correct info: Mike Angelo painted God, Curly Boy Stubbs took the picture of the guitar and played the "St. Louis Tickle" on it, and L. D. Vinci made the ham sandwiches. C. F. Martin was in the back room arranging for backup singers for the title song...we're still waiting. Hope this clears up the confusion. Cheers, Paul Mills |

Subject: RE: Rick's New CD Escapes. From: Duckboots Date: 03 Sep 99 - 01:58 PM Actually it's not really God with a Martin on the cover, it's Sandy Paton in a Kaftan! Rick |

Subject: RE: Rick's New CD Escapes. From: Rick Fielding Date: 04 Sep 99 - 06:50 PM Borealis sent a box down to Connecticut late last week. |
Subject: RE: Rick's New CD Escapes. From: Tony Burns Date: 05 Sep 99 - 07:29 PM I got my copy of This One's The Dreamer at lunch today. I was home long enough to drop it off, pick up a couple of instruments and head off for a jam session. When I got back about 5 hours later my wife Gail informed me she had listened to it four times. It's a winner folks! It has the Gail stamp of approval. Get your copy now!!!!! |
Subject: RE: Rick's New CD Escapes. From: Sandy Paton Date: 05 Sep 99 - 11:24 PM Damn, Rick. I thought that kaftan covered my expanded girth better than that! No box from Borealis as yet, gang, but I'll get a CD off to my web-guru for scanning as soon as the CD arrives. I'm willing to accept advance orders, though. Be sure to mention Mudcat in the comment space, so I'll know to credit the Max account. I may not recognize all your REAL names! Sandy |

Subject: RE: Rick's New CD Escapes. From: Rick Fielding Date: 06 Sep 99 - 12:28 PM Well, I don't know about any "Anglicans with Guitars" group. Must be a secret society. Maybe they're there to pick up girls! By the way Michael, I spent 10 minutes on the Mudcat and then went back to "polishing the pearl", oiling the "board", and changing the pegs on my new acquisition. (see Cheap guitar thread) I erroniously told a couple of people that Borealis Records didn't have an 800 number. Of course they do..it's an "877" number. Their website is up near the top of this thread. Tony, thanks for the nice words about the CD. And Sandy and Caroline thank you so much for your support in the U.S. Without you guys I'd still be playing the Royal Hotel in Kapuskasing Ontario, or doing the half-time show at the Chuck-Wagon races in Elk's Crotch Alberta! Rick |
Subject: RE: Rick's New CD Escapes. From: balladeer Date: 07 Sep 99 - 12:34 PM Do elks have crotches? |
Subject: RE: Rick's New CD Escapes. From: Rick Fielding Date: 07 Sep 99 - 01:00 PM Hi there Balladeer. Do moose have jaws? Elk's Crotch (pick the province of your choice) is the mythical town in rural Canada that represents those places I used to play in the late 60s and 70s. No offence to the elk. Rick |
Subject: RE: Rick's New CD Escapes. From: catspaw49 Date: 07 Sep 99 - 01:13 PM At this time, Peter T.'s fetish for dressing up wildlife has not extended to elk, so I'm sure they aren't offended Rick. However, a number of heron are in therapy at this time. Balladeer, you might consult with Peter on the crotch issue regarding herons if your interests lie in that direction. Spaw |
Subject: RE: Rick's New CD Escapes. From: Sandy Paton Date: 10 Sep 99 - 07:29 PM Rick's CD has crossed the border, all the way down from Elk's Crotch to Sharon, Connecticut (locally known as East Apron Strings, hometown of the bilious Buckleys). Caroline and I have been enjoying it for a couple of days. You can, too, since we take credit card orders with extreme glee at Folk-Legacy. It ain't on our web site yet, but it's here! Sandy (blatantly commercial, but Rick's CD is worth it) |
Subject: RE: Rick's New CD Escapes. From: McKnees Date: 11 Sep 99 - 04:21 AM A plea from the other side of the Atlantic. Has the new CD been exported yet and where can I get a copy. Hopefully Mcknees |
Subject: RE: Rick's New CD Escapes. From: Sandy Paton Date: 11 Sep 99 - 01:02 PM McKnees: You'll have to ask Borealis about overseas distribution. If they have yet to establish any, I'm sure they will ship direct to you, as would we at Folk-Legacy. Sandy |
Subject: RE: Rick's New CD Escapes. From: Duckboots Date: 11 Sep 99 - 04:18 PM McKnees, Borealis is working on overseas distribution and Rick's CD will be available in the UK, I'm just not sure when. However, don't panic, your personal copy is already on it's way - I promise. Sandy, don't want to bypass Folk Legacy and Borealis, deprive the 'Cat of it's share or make any other 'Catters jealous, but McKnees is my sister and she gets the first copy of "This One's The Dreamer" to cross the Atlantic. Subject: RE: Rick's New CD Escapes. From: bbc Date: 12 Sep 99 - 12:35 AM I picked up the 1st copy of the ones at Folk Legacy in person this afternoon & am very pleased to have it. Managed a lovely visit w/ Sandy & Caroline in the process. Both are high on my list for fun! Can't wait to hear the cd, Rick, & I'll give you a report by email. thanks for the music, bbc |
Subject: RE: Rick's New CD Escapes. From: Sandy Paton Date: 12 Sep 99 - 12:56 AM Duckboots: I remember now that McKnees is your Mudcatting sister. Hadn't dawned on me when I posted my reply. Now I think I ought to get my sister on the 'Cat. She just got an Anglo concertina (like the one Rick is getting), so she and Rick could trade progress reports. Tell him I'm sure glad he recorded "Sing With the Angels!" I'm gonna try to slip that one into the Paton songbag as quickly as I can. Ask him to send me the chords he uses (Borealis didn't put the chords into the booklet as Folk-Legacy did with "Lifeline"). Just kidding. I can figure 'em out to make 'em work in my own simplified way. Sandy

Subject: RE: Rick's New CD Escapes. From: Art Thieme Date: 12 Sep 99 - 10:58 AM Folks, This CD is a gem. "Catspaw's Rag" is really a beautiful tune on banjo that Mr. F. wrote for our friend Pat. "The Wind & the Rain" , "In My Life", "Salty Dog"---fine singing---SUPERB backup band with Paul Mills/Curly Boy Stubbs (who did such fine work with Stan Rogers), Grit Laskin, Bill Garrett, Chris Whitely & several others. Just one man's opinion. Art Thieme |
Subject: RE: Rick's New CD Escapes. From: bbc Date: 12 Sep 99 - 05:16 PM Well, I've had my 1st quick listen & enjoyed it very much! Like "Lifeline", "This one's the dreamer" has a nice mix of music, w/ vocal & instrumental all very well-done. I loved "Catspaw's Rag" already. Others that struck my fancy, 1st time through, were "Fa Sol La," "Sing w/ the Angels," (I'm humming that one!), & "When We Gather Once More." I'm sure others will be added to my list of favorites as I have time to listen more carefully. Thanks, Rick! best to you & 'boots, bbc |
Subject: RE: Rick's New CD Escapes. From: Rick Fielding Date: 12 Sep 99 - 07:04 PM Thanks so much, Art and Barbara. Sandy's mention of the chords in the booklet bears mentioning. When I asked him to do that AND make the print REALLY large, I never thought it would expand the booklet to a VERY substantial 39 pages! The booklet with the Borealis album is also quite extensive, and I had the choice of either going with a couple of pages of pictures of everyone involved, or bigger print and chords. I chose somewhat bigger print (I can read it without the specs) and the pics with a short blurb. Figured since most folks are computerised now I could post the chords on my web-site - which I'm trying to do now. Rick |
Subject: RE: Rick's New CD Escapes. From: Sandy Paton Date: 12 Sep 99 - 07:23 PM That's good to know, Rick. I'll check 'em out as soon as they get up there! Sandy |
Subject: RE: Rick's New CD Escapes. From: Rick Fielding Date: 12 Sep 99 - 11:26 PM Sandy,(and anyone else). Here's "Sing with the Angels" Chorus: D/G/D/A/Bm//G// Em//G//C//A// D/G/D/A/Bm//G// Em//A//D//// verse: G//Em//A//D// G//Em//E7//A7// G//Em//A7//Bm// G//A7//Em/A7/D//. I think I sang it in "C" on the CD but D should be a better key for you. |
Subject: RE: Rick's New CD Escapes. From: Sandy Paton Date: 12 Sep 99 - 11:31 PM Thanks, Rick. I might even have to do it in E. It's tough being a boy soprano after all these years! |

Subject: RE: Rick's New CD Escapes. From: Davey Date: 13 Sep 99 - 11:21 AM Picked up Rick's CD from Heather at a party recently and I am thoroughly enjoying it. It's more than up to the high standards I've come to expect from you, Rick. Glad to see that you included "There Comes A Time", by Rick Speyer. Have been singing with him for years and his wonderful songs deserve to be heard. Great CD, Rick.... |
Subject: RE: Rick's New CD Escapes. From: Rick Fielding Date: 13 Sep 99 - 11:43 AM The majority of the accompaniment for Patrick Spencer is comprised of two descending bass runs. They're both really quite simple. The first is from the C note on the 5th string and runs down to the G note on the 6th string. The bass run is: C plus two down strums (2,3) remember it's in waltz time, B (2,3), A (2,3), G (2,3) The second run starts on the G note (3rd string open) and comes down F(2,3),E(2,3), D(2,3). The key to making these runs sound smooth is what chords you're strumming on the "2,3". So, back to the first run: C (strum C chord during the "2,3". B (strum Em), A (strum Am), G..I use an Am7 (index finger on 2nd string, 1st fret. middle finger on 4th string, 2nd fret, and ring finger on 6th string, 3rd fret.) Second Run plus chords: G (just strum top 3 strings open), F (same thing), E (ditto), D (yup, same again)
Chord chart: (/ = boom cha-cha) |
Subject: RE: Rick's New CD Escapes. From: Peter T. Date: 13 Sep 99 - 03:27 PM And you drown if you don't get it right! Many thanks for the time and trouble.... yours, Peter T. ("I saw the auld moon yestereen, with the new moon in her arms" -- sort of miss that line, also "The king sits in Dunfermlin town, drinking the blood-red wine"). Still, great song. Bass runs, grrrrr. |
