Subject: Mudcatters win BBC Folk Final From: Graham Pirt Date: 05 Dec 99 - 08:50 AM Mudcatters Sam Pirt and Ian Stephenson with Joey Oliver and Sophie and Emily Ball in the band "422" last night (Saturday 4 December) won the BBC Young Folk Award. In a concert in Broadcasting House in London they competed against another five performers/bands who had won their way through to the final. The standard was absolutely exceptional and any of the performers could have won. "422" will now appear at Cambridge Folk Festival and take part in an international tour organised by the British Council. Well done all of them. The concert will be broadcast on The Folk Programme on BBC Radio 2 on Wednesday 8 December between 20.00 and 21.00 GMT - Listen in? |

For all those UK catters (& little Dorrit) I'm of to Cottingham folk club on the 8th of December after the broardcast (broardcast is 8pm till 9pm English time) so it would be good to catch some of you there. I should have phoned to find out, but my nerves let me down, and I didn't like to on Saturday night as I didn't know what time it would finish. I hope they'll put you on the Whitby programme. One of the smaller festivals is Stainsby, not far from Chesterfield. It's years since I've been, but it was a very cosy and informal affair. Of course there is another closer to home... Congrats. Subject: RE: Mudcatters win BBC Folk Final From: Jon Freeman Date: 08 Dec 99 - 04:07 PM Wow, some playing!!! As Graham said, the standard all round was exceptional but I did feel that there was one clear winner... Only trouble is, I had talked about the possibility of getting to the JUG with Bill recently, I would be scared stiff of going there now if that is the standard.... Jon (who is nothing like in that sort of league) |
Subject: RE: Mudcatters win BBC Folk Final From: Melbert Date: 08 Dec 99 - 04:48 PM I'm not usually given to using "americanisms" ....... but AWESOME!" |
Subject: RE: Mudcatters win BBC Folk Final From: Jon Freeman Date: 08 Dec 99 - 05:49 PM Just another thought, every group was excellent... isn't to great to know that we have so much young talent around? Do any of you want to move to North Wales? - we could use some more round here at the moment. Jon |
Subject: RE: Mudcatters win BBC Folk Final From: Dave Swan Date: 08 Dec 99 - 06:49 PM Well done, bravo, loud huzzahs from a packed house!!! Sam, PJ's reel is getting played to great acclaim on this side of the pond, now we can say the composer is famous. Congrats. Dave & Pam |
Subject: RE: Mudcatters win BBC Folk Final From: roopoo Date: 08 Dec 99 - 07:47 PM Jon, I sat next to Ian in the Jug tonight, fresh from listening to the concert, and it was just a normal session with everybody just jammin'. Ian entered the pub to a big cheer and then just unpacked his guitar and settled in. (He did get a free drink from the landlord for winning). I am no great shakes as a musician, and I can cope. We are of all standards. You would be most welcome. mouldy |
Subject: RE: Mudcatters win BBC Folk Final From: Graham Pirt Date: 08 Dec 99 - 08:13 PM Sam's having trouble getting on line. We went to the Cottingham Folk Club after the broadcast - big cheer for Sam as well. They all deserve it - not just for the talent but for being nice, ordinary people as well, who just love the music. |
Subject: RE: Mudcatters win BBC Folk Final From: Jon Freeman Date: 08 Dec 99 - 11:13 PM Cheers Mouldy, I was saying it to indicate how impressed I was rather than literaly fearing the session - I have met plenty of musicians far better than me who have been welcoming and encouraging towards me and I will get to the JUG one day - I'll look forward to meeting you there as well... Jon |
Subject: RE: Mudcatters win BBC Folk Final From: roopoo Date: 09 Dec 99 - 03:41 AM Jon, I had a sneaky suspician that was the case! Graham, I doubt he'll forget, but Ian has something in his guitar case for Sam when he next sees him. mouldy |
Subject: RE: Mudcatters win BBC Folk Final From: Roger the skiffler Date: 09 Dec 99 - 04:00 AM I don't often listen to the programme these days but tuned in especially last night.
