Subject: Lyr Req: Soldiers of '22 From: GUEST,Robbo Date: 30 Mar 07 - 12:11 AM Hi All. Would abyone be able to supply the words to the Brian O'Higgins song "Soldiers of '22"? Apparently it was in one or more of the Wolf Tone Annuals. Is it the same one as this tribute to Cathal Brugha: http://alanmcwiki.googlepages.com/cathalbrugha The background tune at the following page seems to fit the words of the Cathal Brugha song - is it the right tune and what is it's correct name?? http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~irelandlist/1916.html Thanks in advance for any help. Robbo. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Soldiers of '22 From: Peace Date: 30 Mar 07 - 12:27 AM The Soldiers of '22 by ? air ? I sing no song of the long-ago Of the warriors staunch and bold Who bore their spears on the Irish hills In the golden days of old But I raise a rann for our own dear lads The loyal, the brave and the true Who flung their lives in the Bearna Baoil The soldiers of '22. Brave Liam Lynch on the mountainside Fell victim to the foe And Denny Lacey for Ireland died In the Glen of Aherlow Niall Boyle and Quinn from the North came down To stand with the faithful few And we'll sing their praise in the freedom's of days ? The heroes of '22. Some fell in the pround r w of war And some by the treacherous blow Like the martyrs four in Dublin town And their comrades at Drumboe And a hundred more in the barracks square And by lonely roadsides too Without fear they died And we speak with pride Of the soldiers of '22. I hope that's it. It's from here. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Soldiers of '22 From: Peace Date: 30 Mar 07 - 12:29 AM Sorry, btw, about some of the words being messed up. I have never heard the song and have nothing to go by but what's on the 'net, and that's all I could find. Perhaps someone who knows the song can clean up the 'mistakes'--meaning no offense to whoever originally wrote the words out. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Soldiers of '22 From: GUEST,Robbo Date: 30 Mar 07 - 02:10 AM Thanks Peace for your prompt reply - that link you provided is a good read - with the rough text of the words you provided, I did another search to turn up this page: http://archives.tcm.ie/carlownationalist/1999/08/28/story4019.asp which gives the wording as follows: ----- I sing no song of long ago, of warriors staunch and bold Who bore their spears on Irish hills, in golden days of old But I raise a rann for our own dear lads, the loyal the brave and true who flung their lives in the bearna bhaoil, the soldiers of '22 When they heard the call of a cause laid low, they sprang to their guns again and the pride of all was first to fall, the glory of our fighting men In the days to come when the pipe and drum you follow in the ways they knew when their praise you sing let the echoes ring with the memory of Cathal Brugha Brave Liam Lynch on the mountainside fell a victim to the foe and Dinny Lacey for Ireland died in the Glen of Aherlow Neil Boyle and Quinn from the North came down to stand with the faithful few And we'll sing their praise in the freedom days among the heroes of '22 Some fell in proud rush of war and some by a treacherous blow Like the martyrs four in Dublin town and their comrades at Drumboe And a 100 more in the barrack square and by lonely roadsides too Without fear they died and we speak with pride of our martyrs of '22 ---- Is this the definitive version or are there others etc? Any comment on the tune?? Thanks again - Robbo. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Soldiers of '22 From: Peace Date: 30 Mar 07 - 02:18 AM WOW. That's a for-sure LYRIC ADD. I will dig around more tomorrow. But with the UKers awake now, I don't doubt you'll have lots of answers before then. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Soldiers of '22 From: MartinRyan Date: 30 Mar 07 - 02:25 AM As I read it, it seems to fall naturally into "The Foggy Dew" air. I have a few of O'Higgins's boooklets somewhere and will check if it appears there. Regards |
