Does anybody know how to print a hand with a pointing finger, as seen in old-fashioned advertisements? I used to be able to print it.

I'm editing a song which has the refrain buried in the middle, and I want to point at it.

Thanks, kat, but that's not what I'm looking for. That page shows how to change my cursor to a hand. I'm looking for something simpler - a little picture of a hand that I could print out, as if it were a letter or number.

I believe I used to find it under Wingdings, but I just typed every letter and number on the keyboard, and no hand appeared.

In Windows, Start|Programs|Accessories|System Tools|Character Map

Select the font called "Wingdings" and about the second row you'll find a selection of simple "pointing fingers." Click on all of the ones you want and click "select." Click "Copy," and then go to the program you want them in and "Paste." Usually moving them all at once into the program where you use them, and then Cut/Copy and Paste the individual ones to the specific locations you want, is easier than moving them into the program one at a time, but take your pick.

Wingdings2 has a similar selection, but of more "modern looking" fingers, so you can take your pick and give the finger in a variety of styles.

There are Unicode characters for some symbols of this kind, but if the ones in CharMap are good for what you want, it's about the easiest place to get them.

Clip-Art collections may also have more varied choices when you can't steal something from the web.

You cross-posted with me, so I didn't know you'd found Wingdings. There is some variation in the "Wingdings" in various Windows versions, but if you use the CharMap and select a character in the top couple of rows, the char gets enlarged so you can see what it is. Especially in Wingdings, it's hard to see what the glyphs are without some enlargement. You can use the arrow keys to move across the row once you've clicked, and each glyph will get enlarged as it's selected. The right and left-pointing fingers in my (WinXP) Wingdings are at hex unicode values 0x45 and 0x46, if that's helpful in for location.

In recent Word versions, you can type "45" (no quotes) and immediately do an Alt-x. The "45" character will be converted to the Unicode character for that number. In common fonts it will look like a squared of upper case "E."

Shift-Left Arrow to select the character that changes, and change it to a Wingding font, enlarge to about 16 point to get it large enough to tell that it's a "finger." This works in my Word, and should work in most recent versions.

Use 46 instead of 45 for giving a finger in the other direction.
