Subject: new singer songwriter Grace Petrie From: Big Al Whittle Date: 17 Oct 08 - 07:20 PM I was doind a charity gig tonight in Loughborough and saw this great young singer songwriter, who i am going to be able to boast in my dotage was once my support act. (a bit like Ricky Gervais in 'The Office' who had Texas as his support act once!) Just really intelligent, pithy lyrics. More intelligence there than in the last twenty 'next great white hopes' of the folk revival combined. I bought her album which I haven't heard yet. She started off with a cover version, which was dire. Competent, but dire. Her own stuff just transfixed me from the first verse. She is really something. I don't think she seems to have any of the gaggle of prestigious backers that are lookinfg for the 'next Rusby'. Some lucky bugger is going to make a fortune. I heard four number ones tonight. Her songwriting is astonishing. |

Subject: RE: new singer songwriter Grace Petrie From: katlaughing Date: 17 Oct 08 - 07:41 PM wld, do her songs on myspace represent a range of what you heard? I am just wondering because they seem to all be in a similar vein. I really like her voice, but the songs were a bit wearing. I think it would be good if there were more variety, but that's just my opinion!:-) Not wanting to be too critical, but I am reminded of what I thought was my innocent question, years ago, when I first came to Mudcat and started This Thread. Oh, boy, what I didn't know!:-) |

Subject: RE: new singer songwriter Grace Petrie From: ToneM Date: 23 Dec 10 - 10:53 AM I know it's been a while since this thread was opened, but I thought people might like an update on how Grace's career is progressing. She played on the Leftfield stage at this year's Glastonbury, where curator Billy Bragg claimed she stole the show. She's also supported Billy, most recently as last week on the last date of his UK tour. She's now got a website at http://www.gracepetrie.com/ where you can listen to her latest CD and even buy it if you want. Here are three YouTube links of Grace performing. The first is a new song about the student protests, filmed at a suitably apt location. (I believe there's another thread on here on the subject of protest songs; I think people should have a look at this one.) The remaining two are of her performing at Glastonbury. The video quality of the last one isn't good, but I think it gets its message across. Hope you enjoy them. Emily Davison Blues Iago Farewell to Welfare |
