It's perfectly clear to me: comedy is the opposite side of the coin of tragedy--one has to be conscious of his/her own mortality to appreciate either (although I swear my black Labrador, Benkei, laughs at me when he drops a ball at my feet only to grab it back as soon as I reach for it). --seed

Sartre must've taken his cue from Nietzsche when later he talked about art, etc borne out of a "lack" (in this instance, of beauty).
