Paddy's Market, used by generations of the poor in Glasgow (and the Irish in particular, hence the name), is being closed down by the council today.

Thanks for that Jack, terribly sad. Just another story amongst so many of councils disregarding the fully functioning working class communities they aught to be serving. I still recall when the council some years ago eradicated a community of river gypsies that had lived on the banks of the Deben at Woodbridge. One fell swoop and nothing to show for a part of local culture that had endured and evolved over the past two hundred years.

So markets which serve affordable food and items to less well-off locals, and river homes which house the homeless, are of less value than crappy little craft boutiques full of nice but uninspired graduates, and paved walkways serving as riverside pedigree toilets.

You'd think that this picture might start to change considering what it's succeeded in achieving thus far?

"A popular tune of 1856 lists the items for sale: shoes sans soles, stockings full of holes, whisky kegs, wooden legs, shearing hooks, old books, corkscrews and trews. "For fifteen pence, you'll be complete," the song promises, "a second-handed dandy." In another song of the period, a country lad on a day out in Glasgow gets suckered into drinking with a Bridgegate prostitute who relieves him of his hat, coat, boots and – it is hinted – his virginity."

Does anyone know anything else about these songs?

The second one must be a version of "As I went down the Overgate".

The first doesn't ring a bell but I'd bet Adam McNaughtan knows it.

Way back in the '80s, one of the vintage motorcycle mags had a set of photos of either the '39 Manx GP or TT taken by an unknown photgrapher.
The film had been in an old Leica bought off the barra's earlier that year. The speculation was that the original owner had been mobilised with the TA or similar reserve and had been an early casualty.
It was further speculated that it ended upon the barra's when his parent's house was cleared after their deaths.
A sad and interesting vignette.
