1st post, just found the site today. I understand this site is focused on folk songs, and as I see this as more of a bluegrassy SW swing song than folk, I'm not sure if this song meets the site criteria. I was introduced to the site by searching for the lyrics to the 1st song on the same album, "Love Over Lonesome". The only promising lead pointed to the following link, which was a broken link when I first tried it a few days ago. Thankfully, I tried it again today and got through.

"Love Over Lonesome" https://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=83549

I appreciate the help of the contributors to the referenced thread, not only for answering some questions my imperfect ears could not, but also for introducing me to this wonderful resource your community has created. I would like to contribute the following in thanks. This is solely based on my previously mentioned questionable hearing, so necessary corrections are welcomed.

THE TRACKER
As performed by Country Gazette, track A2 on the album "All This, And Money, Too"
Written by John Hadley

The wind beneath the Texas stars,
is strumming chords on my guitar,
If I don't get some loving soon, I'll cry.

I'm rolling smokes, I'm folding maps,
I'm looking for my baby's tracks,
If I don't find her soon, I guess I'll die.

I'm following her trail of tears,
It's telling me, that she still cares,
But the trail dried up, a hundred miles ago.

The Texas moon, is shining bright,
It'll tell me where she sleeps tonight,
And tell the wind, to push me to her door.

The morning breaks, the rooster crows,
I roll my bed and I shake my clothes,
I'm headed, for a place they call LA.

She said one day, if she could go,
She'd like to hear the ocean roll,
I bet ya, she's a headed out that way.

Ahoo! Cold coyotes sneaking cross the road,
Aaahoo! Did you lose your darlin' too?
Ahoo! All us old coyotes out tonight,
Lonesome hearted, howlin' at the moon.

Oh Lord give me, the strength to pray,
And help me find the words to say,
To tell her, I'm no good on my own.

And if she listens, patiently,
I think, that I could make her see,
She's all I've ever needed, she's my home.

Ahoo! Cold coyotes sneaking cross the road,
Aaahoo! Did you lose your darlin' too?
Ahoo! All us old coyotes out tonight,
Lonesome hearted, howlin' at the moon.

Oh Lord give me, the strength to pray,
To help me find the words to say,
To tell her, I'm no good on my own.

And if she listens, patiently,
I think, that I could make her see,
She's all I've ever needed, she's my home.
She's all I've ever needed, she's my home.

As stated before, I don't know if these songs qualify for the database or not, but I did check for "Love Over Lonesome," mentioned in the first post, and didn't find it listed.

Thanks again for all the work this community has accomplished. I'm delighted to find this site is not defunct, as I originally thought, and look forward to exploring more.

Guest, Mountaineer, I think you are in the right place.

I haven't hear Country Gazette but the lyrics you posted seem to fit in with the music here, which can cover a wide range. You can search for songs or tunes or topics in the search boxes under the Mudcat heading on the main page. An explanation: DT is the Digital Tradition section so you might find some of the songs you are looking for by searching that section.

Mudcat has had some IT issues over the last few months so sometimes the server is down. Just keep trying and usually it comes back.

The lyrics you posted sound correct to me:

Country Gazette The Tracker

Your lyrics also look good to me.

While you're right that the forum is largely dedicated to folk and old-time music, it never hurts to get some other disciplines in the mix. It's mostly a matter of what people are interested in sharing or not.

I, for one, enjoy bluegrass, and Country Gazette. I have their first album, A Traitor In Our Midst, and this song is just as good a quality as that album.
