Subject: Lyr Add: Health and Beauty by Frank Sutton From: Monologue John Date: 18 Jul 23 - 05:37 AM HEALTH AND BEAUTY (Frank Sutton) Says Old Sam to his missus “What's ailing thee lass ? I've a feeling tha's been taken queer Tha missed Bingo last week Into city tha went Now tha eating fress fruit With thi beer” Said T'owld Lass “Health and Beauty that's what it's about “ An elegant pose she stuck then At least that's what she thought Then Old Sam said “Having trouble wi thi corset's again” “I will treat that remark With contempt it deserves But tha'l laugh tother side of the face When tha sees me dolled up On a diet an all And I walk with a step full of grace” “On a diet “ , said Sam “does tha means thas to clam? Eyup that's a goodun and reet” “No it's only at mealtimes as I has to clam In between times ought I fancy I'll eat” Next morning to chemist shop Sam had to go For beauty cream for Mrs Sam “How much does tha want?” Then Sam he replied “Can tha fill us this five gallon can ?” Towd Lass she sits down In the mirror she smiles Then she dips into five gallon can And she plasters it over her face and her neck “Tha looks better already “ says Sam But after two or three weeks Old Sam saw a change Of Thowd Lass he was as proud as could be She would exercise daily and have a quick dab Under armpits with Oh Dough Ray Me She never goes out in her curlers no more And all neighbours admire in street For as she says “You never know who you'll meet When you nip across yard late at night” So here's a good cheer to every young lass And may Health and Beauty prevail And if ever thas need of a five gallon can Tha must need more fresh fruit with the ale |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Frank Sutton songs and poems From: GUEST,henryp Date: 21 May 24 - 12:29 PM Subject: RE: What songs are native to Derbyshire? From: GUEST, Benita Sutton-Cegarra Date: 18 Nov 14 - 08:42 PM Frank Sutton was my dad and sadly died of cancer in 2003. From time to time, I search the web for any references to him and have not come across this thread before. He and his songs get a mention or two above. Frank Sutton collected poems from around Derbyshire and South Yorkshire and set them to music - The Cow i' th' Gate mentioned above being one of these. He also wrote many of his own songs with Derbyshire themes, including Charlie Sparrer's Marrer also mentioned above, which has actions that I've known all my life :-) He wrote a series of songs about a chap called Sam, including "Sam pick up thi musket" and "Health and Beauty" and another set of songs about "Joe Biggin". He also wrote "Jonny Derbyshire" for the same competition as Ian Carter wrote "Ey Up Me Duck". I went to the final of the competition with my dad and seem to remember you singing it, Ian! He had a dabble with a Derbyshire take on Bluegrass in the early '90s, writing a song called "The Hope Valley Line" about the railway line, name-checking all the stations from Totley tunnel onwards. My personal favourite of all his songs is "The River Don" although that is about South Yorkshire rather than Derbyshire. There are decades of recordings in my mum's loft that I hope I will one day find time to catalogue and publish. Gerald Short is also mentioned above. He was a good friend of my dad and he made my dad's guitar. He did indeed move to Scotland many moons ago, but I believe is sadly no longer with us either. This thread has made me smile a lot, as I grew up with a lot of the songs mentioned.
