Bethlehem's Stall is a 16th or 17th century Basque Carol. Have one verse of lyrics, but it seems to be the start of a story and would like to find additional verses. The verse I have goes like this: Bethlehem's darkened city, Mary and Joseph sought. Asking (for love or pity) Haven for hearts distraught. Houses were shut upon them, Faces were cold and stark. Fire there was none to warm them, Candle to light the dark. Thanks for any help.

I believe that the version you want is listed as a track on this CD: Ancient Noëls / Maggie Sansone and Ensemble Galilei Label: Maggie's Music, Release Date: 1993, Catalog Number: MMCD 108; Distributor: Allegro.

... also as a track on a CD: A Victorian Noël, listed here :CLICK, and the liner notes there indicate: Bethlehem's Stall (Basque) -- Of unknown antiquity, the Basque title is "Abets zagun guziek."

Everything else I found was a different song by the same name-- two or three others, according to Google search. And nothing on the Basque name of it.

If we don't find it, but you ever do-- please post it here!

Hey Wizzy........Perhaps your second source would be useful, but I wouldn't count on getting any words off a Maggie Sansone recording.........they are generally all instrumental. Maggie Sansone is one helluva' Hammered player and very stylish in her playing, quite unique in many ways......odd trills and hammer patterns.......But all of her stuff I have is entirely instrumental. Great stuff though!!!

If you CLICK HERE, you will find a very generous offer of Basque songs from member Escamillo. And if you join Mudcat, you can send him a personal message that will be there waiting for him next time he visits Mudcat, which may or may not be soon.

Memberships are described in the FAQ thread, top of the thread list.

Enjoy!
