I was going to mention this last week, but forgot 'til today. :) NPR's All Things Considered is currently airing a 10-part program called The Yiddish Radio Project once a week. The (excellent) second episode, devoted to the radio program "Yiddish Melodies in Swing," aired today (and should replay again today, I think).

Besides the NPR page I linked to above, here's the YRP site: *CLICK* They have a CD, too. :)

Shoot, I'll expand on my earlier post a little, since it wasn't very informative. (a co-worker wouldn't SHUT THE HELL UP WHILE I WAS TYPING, which made it difficult to, uh, type. :P) The Yiddish Radio Project has rescued some rare recordings of Yiddish radio programs from the 30s-50s, which are featured on the ATC series. This week, like I mentioned, it was about the old program, "Yiddish Melodies in Swing," and featured the surviving half of the Barry Sisters, as well as lots of great music and information. (Most of the episodes are non-musical, though, which is why I made the thread BS.) Looking at the YRP site, there's also a documentary in production, and a touring "multi-media spectacular" hosted by YRP producers Henry Sapoznik and David Isay. So... :)

Connecting to another thread, that same segment spent some time on Sholem Secunda's "Bei mir bist du sheyn," and I assume this is the Sholem Secunda who held the copyright on "Dona Dona." Sounds like we should know more about this - guy.

I've been including excerpts from the Yiddish Radio Project CD on the past several editions of Folk Roots/Folk Branches and will have another excerpt tomorrow morning sometime between 9:15 and 9:30 am (Eastern time).

BTW, the CD includes a 1941 performance of "Dona Dona" by Moishe Oysher and Sholom Secunda from WEVD, New York.
