This story describes the recovery, identification and now the auction of the ship's bell that is believed to have tolled the watches for the Santa Maria until it grounded, on Christmas day, 1492, C. Columbus commanding.

Wonderful (if true, which it seems to be) story. Imagine the dawns and dog watches the old gal has rung in... for some reason I am glad it survived all these centuries.

Wha' -- not even a peep? The Santa Maria's bell inspires not even a couplet?

That ass in the White House has really terrorized people, I guess. :>)

The bell tolled on seas both calm and tossed
As Columbus, the Atlantic he crossed.
It rang every watch
But the trip was a botch
'Cause Columbus, the dumbass, was lost.

How was that?

Well, just because I care:

Columbus had a bell,
He'd ring it day or night,
Until his ol' dong wore off,
He was then one sorry sight.

This bell comes back from years ago;
Recovered from the sea.
When last its tones were heard, you know.
The natives still lived free!

And 'tho' it's damaged, truth to tell,
It's worthy still, I say
To berth 'longside that other bell
In Phil-a-delph-I-A !

(any excuse to refresh!)
