Yes, it's true! Beppe Gambetta is the season opener for the Branford Folk Music Society - at their NEW LOCATION - on Saturday, September 13, 2003.

This is BFMS's 30th anniversary season, so in addition to a great musician like Beppe, they will invite back some great performers from the early years, including our own Kendall Morse!! (More about that in March when he is scheduled to appear). The new location is the 1st Congregational Church, two buildings away on the same town green. The hall is spacious, handicap-accessible, has a stage and other fine amenities (like heat in the winter) and they may even set up card tables like a real coffeehouse!

Here's the official blurb:

Beppe Gambetta is a remarkable musician and singer who has almost single-handedly popularized flatpicking throughout Europe, while forging his own unique approach to the guitar along the way. He fills the audience with enthusiasm in his choice of songs and tunes, including some in his native Italian, where his thorough knowledge of traditional guitar techniques is well exhibited. In concert, his charming accent and naturally outgoing personality make him extremely popular.

I'm told there might be a few surprises that night, too. Anyone interested?

I heard Beppe at a workshop at Old Songs, and also heard him at the "street corner" there doing songs from Genoa. Those songs caused a few silly tears in my half-Italian eyes...

He's really wonderful as an entertainer and singer, and I guess the guitar-heads think he's pretty special too! I hope people turn out for this program so BFMS can continue to bring in performers of this caliber for concerts.

His wife (the dancer) will be with him.

I loved his comment that his next song was a traditional Italian courting song written only about 400 years ago. When those Italians talk about old time music they really mean it!
