I remember the 1st Verse only (& Chorus)
There's a whole lot of people looking down their noses at me
cos I didnt come from a wealthy family
there were 10 of us living in a 2 room shack at the side of a river & a railroad track, we kept chickens in a shack at the back (?) and
we werent nothing but poor folks.

Poor folks livin in a rich folks world, sure were a hungry bunch
if the wolf had ever come to our fromt door he'd 've had to bring a pic-nic lunch.

Grandaddys pension was .... thats ... $ less than the landlord wanted for rent ....

A complete blank from here!

Message:

Many thanks, friend! that's the one, (mind you I am struggling to fit all those sillybobs in, in the 4th verse!)
Don't suppose you know the song about the coolie mountain dam,? dunno if that's the spelling or the title! god I am a pain! :{D

Found this in the DT:

Grand Coulee Dam - Woody Guthrie

Hope you don't mind putting this back into the main Forum.

No worries! I heard the Grand Coulee Dam thing on TV the other day, the History channel I think. Some project, and it's always nice to know the stort behind the song.

PO' FOLKS
(Bill Anderson)
            G                           D7                 G
There's a whole lot of people lookin' down their noses at me
                            D7         G
'Cause I didn't come from a wealthy family.
          C                     G
There were ten of us livin' in a two-room shack
       D7                        G
On the banks of the river by the railroad tracks.
   C                   G
We kept chickens in a pen in the back
                           D7         G
And ever'body said we were Po' Folks.
My daddy was a farmer, but all he ever raised was us.
He dug a forty-foot well, struck thirty-six gallons of dust.
The Salvation Army gave us clothes to wear.
A man from the County came to cut our hair.
We lived next door to a millionaire,
But we wasn't nothin' but Po' Folks.
                C                      G
CHORUS: We was Po' Folks livin' in a rich folks' world.
   D7                G
We sure was a hungry bunch.
       C                   G
If the wolf had ever come to our front door,
A7                      D7
He'd a had to brought a picnic lunch.
My granddaddy's pension was a dollar and thirty-three cents.
That was ten dollars less than the landlord wanted for rent.
The landlord's letters got nasty, indeed.
He wrote: "Get out!" but Pa couldn't read,
And we were too broke, to even pay heed.
But that's how it is, when you're Po' Folks. CHORUS

But we had somethin' in our house money can't buy,
Kept us warm in the winter, cool when the sun was high,
For whenever we didn't have food enough,
And the howlin' winds would get pretty rough,
We patched the cracks and set the table with 'Love'
'Cause that's what you do, when you're Po' Folks.
     D7                    G
And we wasn't nothin' but Po' Folks.
    D7                G
My mom and my dad was Po' Folks.
    D7                      G
My brother and my sister was Po' Folks. (Fade)
    D7                G
My dog and my cat was Po' Folks.
    D7                      G
And even the Po' Folks was Po' Folks.
