I'm curious if anyone in Mudcat Land has satellite radio? Both XM and Sirius have folk channels and I would be curious as to your thoughts.

I have XM and I don't listen to the folk station very much. It's a blend of mostly folk revival and contemporary music with an occasional traditional piece thrown in.

Again, we come to the question of the question of "what is folk music?" and the very broad definition that most media, and, for that matter, most people have.

XM's folk channel does have a significant lean toward singer-songwriters, and most of the "trad" pieces come from Irish or Scottish artists that are thrown in.

Frankly, I'm kind of glad that the definition of folk music is broad but I do see your point and the need for more trad music.

Could I ask what channels you do listen to?

Ron,

If I want to listen to folk music, I generally listen to recordings that I have collected over the past 50 years or so. Since my interest lies almost entirely in the traditional or roots music vein, that's the easiest place to find it.

I listen to a variety of different programming on XM: classical, popular music from the forties, old time radio programs, NPR, etc.

I live in rural Vermont where there is very little over the air reception so XM has been a nice source of entertainment for me.
