There's a traditional ballad called "The Gardener's Child" (or the Gairdner's Child), which you can find in Francis James Child's ballad collection (sorry, I'm at work and don't have the number). Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger recorded a great version on their Tradition LP (now re-released on CD), "Classic Scots Ballads." Don't know if that's the song you're looking for. First verse (with Scots dialect removed, 'cause I'm not a Scot) goes:

Proud Maisry stands at her father's door,
As straight as a willow wand,
And by there came a gardener's child
With a red rose in his hand, his hand
A red rose in his hand.

The song has lots of botanical symbolism and a wonderful stick-it-to-'im ending. Mary LaMarca and I perform it together occasionally. If this is the song you want, I strongly suggest you look it up in F.J.Child. If it's not what you're looking for, I hope you find the right song.

One might note that Ewan MacColl was not Scottish by birth - he was from East Anglia, and merely decided that he preferred to be Scottish. If this sounds peculiar, note also that Robert the Bruce was born in Essex. There is a song by Allan Taylor about a gardener's son - the title is Lavinia Forsythe-Jones

The Gairdner's Child is in the DT here. As KathWestra says, it's a Child ballad, #219 (it's not listed by this name on the Child website, though--at least I couldn't find it).

CHILD 219A

THE gardener stands in his bower-door,
With a primrose in his hand,
And by there came a leal maiden,
As jimp's a willow wand.

`O lady, can you fancy me,
For to be my bride,
You'll get a' the flowers in my garden,
To be to you a weed.

`The lily white shall be your smock;
Becomes your body neat;
And your head shall be deckd with jelly-flower,

`Your gown shall be o the sweet-william,
Your coat o camovine,
And your apron o the salads neat,
