AAAAAARGH

Howdy all-knowing mudcatters....I am trying to hook up with other folksters in my area (San Francisco Bay) to form a folky band/group. I've tried cragislist but that's mainly rock/punk/new wave teenagers. What's a singer to do? I am tired of strumming by myself at the local coffee shop....and I'm also sick of being in a pop band where I'm expected to belt everything at the top of my lungs.....

Hello Sarah,

Go to a meeting of the San Francisco Folk Music Club. The club meets every other Friday at 885 Clayton Street in San Francisco. Call (415) 661-2217 to find out the date of the next meeting. You'll meet many a folkie there.

You can also log onto the club's newletter,
The Folknik, where you will find calendar listings of regular and one-time events in the San Franicsco Bay Area.

I am tired of strumming by myself...

Am I correct in inferring you play the guitar? What instruments are you looking for, and what kind of music do you want to make, specifically (trad or singer/songwriter, bluegrass, old-time, Celtic, klezmer...)?

Cheers,
Michael

Hi, Sarah--if you're into sea music and chanteys, come to our next chantey sing at San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park, corner of Hyde and Jeffereson at Fisherman's Wharf. (can't miss Balclutha; only three-masted square-rigger on the Bay.) It's the first Saturday of every month, 8 p.m. to midnight, and the next one will be July 2. It's free, but you need to call 415-556-6435 for reservations.

In ddition to all of the above, if it's Celtic musicians you're looking for, try the Sunday night session at the Starry plough in berkeley, where you'll find both instrumentalists and singers. PM me for contact info and directions, if you'd like.
