It is getting near birthday time for my sons. Geof is looking for a means to record guitar and voice onto computer as a gift for his brother. Any suggestions? Microphones for voice, hardware for guitar?
I'm out of my depth here as well.

Thanks,

Don Meixner

line 6 Protone USB recording interface is becoming an 'industry standard'
entry level low cost good semi-pro quality
portable means of turning computers into prcticable 'home recording studios'

http://www.line6.com/toneport/

if he also needs midi connectivity to run external sound modules
and synths etc from a software sequencer..
the likes of e-mu and m-audio etc.
market a plethora of lower cost high quality soundcards
and usb/midi interfaces..

if he also hopes to experiment with software sythesisers etc,
then additional midi connectivity will be necessssary to connect
a controller keyboard to the computer..
though, an 'old fashioned' game port midi lead may be the minimum requirement if it works ok on his computer..

however, if the extra money is available..

line 6 are about ready to ship this cool looking all-in-one

recording and keyboard interface..

though needs to be mentioned that none of this gear will be much use
if he doesn't have a modern and powerfull enough computer
that meets the minimum running reqirements of hi-tech recording interfaces
and software

[..i'm stuck in the house killing time waiting for delivery of a new 'ebay' guitar..]

so..

as for microphones..

the market is swamped with very good quality cheap chinese made
'studio' condenser mics [less than £100]
issued under a variety of brand names..

current sept 06 issue of UK magazine 'Sound on Sound'
conntains an excellent article on 'the essentials of choosing and using studio mics'
