I'll be heading down to the New England Folk Festival Association event in Mid April with a few friends. Anyone else going? Looks like they will have the schedule up VERY soon on their website http://www.neffa.org/~neffa/ (anyone wanna turn that into a blue clicky thing?)

The old folk fogey from the faraway hills and his family, along with their Folk-Legacy sales booth, will be there and will look forward to greeting all of you you Green Mountain folks. That's where we began, you know -- in a farmhouse in Huntington, Vermont, right by the Huntington River. Wood heat, one cow, some chickens, and a bunch of Malamutes (up to twelve at one time, counting pups). I was even the Assistant Chief of the volunteer fire department and served a miserable term on the school board. Moved down here to the tropics in 1967.

See you in Natick!

Sandy

I'll definitely be there on Saturday with the Harrisville (NH) Women's morris team (look for the bright fuschia vests and the dancing flamingo!). I'd love to stay the weekend if I can figure out the accomadations. Sandy, may we use the Folk Legacy table as a central Mudcat meeting place?

According to the preliminary grid, our trio ("Woodchucks' Revenge") has, somewhat to our surprise, been scheduled for two sets.

At 10:45 am Saturday, we have a "concert" set entitled "Both Sides of Champlain," in the Lyric Room. This will be a mix of Vermont and Adirondack songs, some trad. but most by friends of ours such as Chris Shaw and Senator McCormack, etc. Maybe one or two of our own.

On Sunday at noon we're supposed to lead a "Bluegrass Song Swap" in the Small Hall. We've asked them to change the name for the final form of the grid, since we have no intention whatever of trying to limit this to Bluegrass. BG, pre-Garth commercial country, old-timey, etc. ad infinitum, will be encouraged. As far as we're concerned.

We hope to meet a bunch of youse all, at one of these or elsewhere at the festival.

Peter.

See you there!

Delighted to provide a central meeting place for Mudcatters. Gather ye all at the Folk-Legacy table, but scrunch down toward one end, to leave room for (we hope) a few customers. I haven't seen a workshop grid, but I suspect we'll be doing something. Wear your Mudcat T-shirts, if you have 'em (the better to recognize you with, m'dear). Animaterra is excused, of course, since she has to be in her fuschia vest and wearing bells to warn the canary that she's approaching.

Looks like it'll be a northeast gathering. there's gotta be at least 10 Catter's on the performing list then those that'll be helping with dancing/music & not named then them that'll be just plain funning around. Oh how will I get to hear & see all, (he, he, snicker, snicker) guess I just have to try real hard & hope to enjoy myself.

Hi Deb knew you were going to be there, didn't know you to be here to much though, see you there. Hop into the Celtic singer's club.

Hi Dan, it'll be good to hear/see you & Liam's sis in-law (a Johnson Girl) again & I'll be looking foreward to the treat of hearing you & Bob for my first time.

I'll be helping out at the History of Shanties & the Bodhran (singing with the drum) workshops & doing the prison worksongs.

See you all, Barry

I'll be calling dances on the Auditorium Stage on Sunday from 11:00 to 11:45, and I hope some of you will be able to come. This will be a session of easy dances, so you don't need to worry about having dance experience. Children are also welcome.

I'll also be morris dancing with the Black Jokers on Saturday. I think that's at 10 o'clock.

By my count only 45 days till NEFFA. Hoping for lots of time to jam and dance and sing and overeat Hungarian goulash, a high spot of every year. Scheduled to do a workshop on the Carter Family I think 10 Am or 11 AM Sunday morning (probably with Susan Sterngold, Mike Resnick, Drew Smith) and the same cast of characters will also support Drew on Saturday evening as he leads the 'string, weed and rind jam" as he does every year. I'm looking forward to every last bit of it except the parking.

Peg, you'd be more than welcome at the singer's club, you are after all counted among them. Talk to Judy about seeing if it counts for getting you into the festival & talk to Shay about getting a feel for how it's gonna go down. It's more than worth any time, effort & money to make it. Connie may be heading out there so you may be able to find some transportation with him. Hope to see you there. Work has been keeping me from the sessions lately when things improve I be able to resume my regular schedule. Barry

There wasn't any choice about the date for NEFFA. The usual weekend is a week later, but this year that coincides with Easter. Half of the food booths said that they wouldn't be there on Sunday if was held Easter weekend. Moving it to the start of school vacation week was the only other choice.

Deb & Peg, Definitely join Barry & I & whoever else shows up from Paddy Burke's, at NEFFA 10:30 Satuday night, for what I abbreviated as "The Boston Celtic Singers Club", (to fit on the grid...) All "scheduled" performers get free admission for the entire festival. I just emailed someone to find out the deadline for listing group members. (Does anyone here know the deadline?) Send me your email addresses so we can coordinate the singers club, outside the mudcat, if we don't meet up inside Paddy Burke's...

(If that was a garbled mess instead of a blue clicky thing, my address is judypredmore@webtv.net )

What is the singer's session? Is this a Boston FSSGB event, or is it the Singer's Showcase on Friday night at NEFFA? Are other out-of-towners welcome?

Hi Lamarca, it's the Boston Traditional & Folk Singer's Club, it has no ties to the Boston Folk Song Society nor to their weekly sings out side of some of us are members of FSSGB. We gather weekly at a pub in Boston & have the 3rd floor to ourselves & those that care to join or just listen, we contribute $1 each person when we attend & that goes to bring in a guest singer who doesn't really preform but is more the featured singer for that special evening. Our first featured singer was Frank Harte & we knew right then that we had a great idea next was our Dan Milner & coming up March 22 will be Martain Windham Reed (we only go top shelf). Judy whose here on the Cat is a memeber of both the singer's club & of the FSSGB & approched the NEFFA committee about allowing a spot at the festival for the singer's club so there you go, hopefully it'll be as decent a slice as can be presented on how the singer's club work & interacts minus the beer & the bar. I'll keeping my ear opened for you & George, see you there. Barry

Barry, the singer's club sounds neat. What a treat that you have Martyn coming in March. He'll be here in D.C. on the weekend of March 10. I can't wait.

Is there any interest in a saturday mid to late afternoon open shanty sing somewhere in the halls of if the weather's nice maybe in the courtyard? There seems to be a lull around that time in the schedule with sea related music & not as many Mudcatters' doing workshops at this time. The talent doing sea music there this time around is quite astounding in quanity & quality & I don't think that a session of this type would be out of line (don't really know about that), just if there's interest, anyone up for it? Hi Jerry, didn't mean to twist so hard. I was looking at maybe from 3:15 to 5:45 that would put it between the end of the sea singing of the Johnson Girls & the beginning of the Chantey Blast. Their are some things in bewteen then but if it's spread out for that length of time it probably wouldn't detract from anyone or thing (hopefully). If the weather's ok the courtyard is a nice area where it'll probably be no bother to anyone, the front in nice weather is usually taken up by the morris teams with a small room for maybe something off to the side. Susan A-R: If you guys sneak out for burgers, please come by the Folk-Legacy booth first. I may be unable to get away, but I'd sure be eager to send a take-out order along with you. I don't know from Hungarian desserts, Joan, but this old man does not live by sweets alone. With, maybe, but surely not BY.

Barry, if the Morris bells in the courtyard are too loud, there ought to be another spot for guerilla shanty-singing. We'll find it. Liam's brother is very inventive and not easily dissuaded.

Just heard Allison's group on Vermont Public Radio (the one folk show per week) this afternoon. Nice singing! Also heard mention of Midchuck's group, Woodchuck's Revenge. Sorry I can't make it over to Hinesburg on Wednesday, but that's a late night at the kitchen for me. It'll be great to meet you all in April. Sandy, we might ought to just bring the beef back to the festival and sing shanties and eat burgers together. Late lunch??

I need to print out the schedule and spend some time with it. It looks absolutely dizzying, and I can see myself running around in circles of excitement and missing stuff if I don't do some planning (which can be thrown out the window once I am there if something terriffic comes long, of course.) I will also be there with two friends who now live a distance away (haven't seen either of them in over a year) so I'm prioritizing them in myplans for the weekend. I'll be winging it.

Jennifer and I are on Sunday (1 PM-ish) with "Family History" in song, which will consist of songs which we have at least a general idea connect to either her or my family (e.g., "Battle of Waterloo," for Jennifer's side, and "Don't Be Too Sure At First Glance," a song my uncle, one of several musicians in the family, wrote). Some of the connections will be tenuous, to be sure, but the songs are all right.

I hope to be around for some of the sings and jams, too. No "Sidekicks" -- as such -- this year, with Pete still in law school and too busy to do much musically.

I can probably get down to places such as White River by 5, or Manchester by 6:30 or so, Nashua at a little after seven. If that fits with anyone's schedules, let me know and I'll figure out specifics (I can bring road food too.) I am trying to avoid winding up in downtown Boston at 7:15 on the bus. Bother jobs and public transit.

Re: Boston Folk & Traditional Singers

Just wondering whether Shay Walker has committed to attending and whether Mic Murphy has returned from Ireland. I look forward to seeing you all at NEFFA.

All the best,

Greetings to Haddie of Finn and Haddie! Looking forward to hearing the two of you next weekend, as I have only heard Barry on his own so far (and only once at that). :-)

Barry, I will try like heck to find that courtyard. My head will be spinning from all the activity. I may well be dragging my dad along on Saturday, but am not sure whether we'll hang out in the same places once we get there. (Probably not, he's so gregarious and I have an agenda this time...) Anyway, I will be there come hell or high water on Saturday, despite the fact that most likely I will have my toddler in tow. I'm desperately seeking a babysitter!

Catch you all there!
