Vin’s son Tim and family friend Maggie are hoping Julyan Wallis can restore this piece of musical history so that it can be played again. Vin started his career in the 1960s, busking his way through Spain, where this instrument played an integral part in developing the strumming method that helped him become a globally recognised folk artist. After repairing the damaged bodywork, Julyan needs to restring and tune the mandriola to restore its original sound. Tim and Maggie are overjoyed when the item is returned to them, unlocking a piece of their father and friend’s past. (On a tour of Borneo, I understand that Vin was introduced as the Wild Man of Middlesbrough.) |

Folk Aduaidh is a 2015 three-part series that examines the untold history of folk music in Ulster alongside the social, political and cultural backdrop of the time. The first episode follows the story of northern folk music from the time of Edward Bunting in the late 1700s, to the great song collections of the early 20th century by Sam Henry and Énrí Ó Muirgheasa, to the beginning of the civil rights movement in the 1960s. Part two of Folk Aduaidh follows the story of northern folk music from the outbreak of the Civil Rights Movement, through the 1970s and 80s, an era often referred to as the Troubles, which is also regarded as the golden age of traditional song in Ulster. The final episode follows the story of northern folk music from the 1990s, which saw the rise of traditional northern supergroups such as Altan, Déanta, Tamalin, Lá Lugh, At First Light and Flook. With the changes in pub licences in the mid-90s, along with a new era of peace, live folk and traditional music established a new and lasting platform in Ulster to the present day. |
