Subject: RE: BS: Whitby Folk Week From: Steve Latimer Date: 22 Oct 99 - 10:31 AM I live in Whitby, Ontario, Canada. Each summer there is a Whitby Folk Festival. Were you aware of it? Steve |
Subject: RE: BS: Whitby Folk Week From: Graham Pirt Date: 22 Oct 99 - 02:21 PM Steve Actually I had heard of it. So please note that this is Whitby Folk "Week" and not "festival". However, it would be really good to see Whitby in Ontario! |
Subject: RE: BS: Whitby Folk Week From: Steve Latimer Date: 22 Oct 99 - 02:38 PM Graham, Regardless of what people like Rick Fielding might tell you, Whitby, Ont. is the cultural centre of Canada. Just kidding, we are a town of about 70,000 about half an hour east of Toronto. Not much happens here, but it is a very nice place and although it has grown considerably in the last fifteen years, it still manages to retain a quaint small town feel. If you find yourself anywhere near Toronto, look me up and I'll give you the three hour tour (2 1/2 of which are having a couple of pints and talking about Whitby England. Regards, Steve

Subject: RE: BS: Whitby Folk Week From: Bert Date: 22 Jun 00 - 03:41 PM OK Graham & Steve, Give me some dates and links and such for the 'what's on' thread. Bert. |
Subject: RE: BS: Whitby Folk Week From: GUEST,Ickle Dorritt Date: 22 Jun 00 - 05:10 PM I have secured my lodgings at the Endeavour for folk week, and can't wait for a get together. |
Subject: RE: BS: Whitby Folk Week From: Tig Date: 22 Jun 00 - 05:59 PM The Badger, Kat and I will be there for at least part of the week. If we aren't up for the workshop look out for us carting a bag of badges around. You don't need to buy but they are worth reading! Spot those of us with Mudcat ones with our cookie on to put names to faces! |
Subject: RE: BS: Whitby Folk Week From: Susan of DT Date: 22 Jun 00 - 07:05 PM Dick Greenhaus and I will be there. Bill Sables invited us and it seemed like a good idea. See you there. |
Subject: RE: BS: Whitby Folk Week From: GUEST,Kathy Date: 23 Jun 00 - 06:04 AM What are the dates of Whitby Folk Week |
Subject: RE: BS: Whitby Folk Week From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 23 Jun 00 - 07:32 AM From my festivals list on my website:
Aug 19-25 WHITBY FOLK WEEK 2000, Whitby, North Yorkshire Details from: Malcolm Storey, PO Box 44, Selby, N Yorkshire, YO8 9YP. Tel: (01757) 708424. Fax: (01757) 708424. e-mail: wfw@box44selby.freeserve.co.uk Whitby Folk Week. A bit challenging vertically perhaps, but worth the climb. It's always a great festival. A season ticket for the week is £80 up till 1st May. A Mudcat Cafe Workshop is promised. Contact: 01757 708424. Fax: (01757) 708424 |
Subject: RE: BS: Whitby Folk Week From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 23 Jun 00 - 07:35 AM Tig - any way of getting badges in time for any other festivals, like Sidmouth? |
Subject: RE: BS: Whitby Folk Week From: Terry K Date: 23 Jun 00 - 08:35 AM Where in Whitby is it mainly located? Any suggestions for accommodation? Is there a convenient caravan site? Haven't been to Whitby for years, so I'll have to get there. Cheers Terry |
Subject: RE: BS: Whitby Folk Week From: bobby's girl Date: 23 Jun 00 - 04:47 PM The festival takes place pretty well all over Whitby, but the Festival Office is based in West Cliff School, and is usually well signposted. There is a festival camp site, and also, just outside Whitby itself but in easy walking distance, there is a Haven holiday site. |
Subject: RE: BS: Whitby Folk Week From: GUEST,Kathy Date: 23 Jun 00 - 05:40 PM Thank you for the dates. Kathy |
Subject: RE: BS: Whitby Folk Week From: roopoo Date: 24 Jun 00 - 04:48 AM Graham - Thanks for reminding me I haven't paid for my cottage yet! The "Green Man" is conveniently situated at the foot of the Crag, so often gets used as a stop-off point for cuppas! I'll be around all week, with or without my Terry Pratchett lookalike husband (depending on if they let him home from wherever he is). mouldy and selby - you mean you haven't even started the pizza fund yet....? Get a grip, lad!

Subject: RE: BS: Whitby Folk Week From: GUEST,tandamaher.@aol.com. Date: 27 Jun 00 - 05:01 AM we'll be there, never miss, see you in the tap |
Subject: RE: BS: Whitby Folk Week From: Dorrie Date: 27 Jun 00 - 09:47 AM i have a cottage on pannet way, (i've not paid yet either! whoops!) but tried to find it at M&C and couldn't, can anyone enlighten me? is a long walk from spa? is it dark and scary? are we having bad taste night?/britneyspears night/tarts and vicars/rocky horror/lots of dressing up in general? yeah!!! |
Subject: RE: BS: Whitby Folk Week From: Patrish(inactive) Date: 27 Jun 00 - 09:51 AM I stayed on pannets way a while back, its about a five minute walk down hill into town, but getting back after leg wobbling drinks may take a little longer Patrish |
Subject: RE: BS: Whitby Folk Week From: selby Date: 27 Jun 00 - 02:37 PM Mouldy The pizza fund is well advanced. Just the Beer money to save up for now. I was wondering on the protocol of being a mudcatter, do I have to wear my Mudcat T shirt ALL week or can I get away with every other day. Keith |
Subject: RE: BS: Whitby Folk Week From: GUEST,Wullie Date: 27 Jun 00 - 03:05 PM Hope to see everyone at Whitby, just wear you tee shirt and talk to anyone similar Wullie |
Subject: RE: BS: Whitby Folk Week From: GUEST,Jim Dunn Date: 27 Jun 00 - 05:44 PM A cheaper and closer site camp/caravan site to the town than the Haven site is Stoupe Cross. It's family owned and has a nice feel about it. Unfortunately for anyone wishing to take their dog camping, due to people not clearing up after their dogs and also letting them run wild, the family have now banned campers bringing dogs onto the site. |
Subject: RE: BS: Whitby Folk Week From: GUEST,jim banham Date: 28 Jun 00 - 07:33 AM Keith .Who but a Yorkshireman would put 20ps in the pizza fund.In Lancashire it's 50ps.See you there .We're off to weekend of dance @ Scarborough. Jim |
Subject: RE: BS: Whitby Folk Week From: Mrs.Duck Date: 28 Jun 00 - 03:24 PM Ok I've just decided to organise a mudcat barbeque at our cottage (just behind the White Horse) It's next door to Malcolm Storey but we probably won't invite him. I'll post details of exact time and location etc in the Tap and Spile. |
Subject: RE: BS: Whitby Folk Week From: selby Date: 29 Jun 00 - 01:54 PM Jim Who but a Lancastrian would have to leave his own county and travel across the great divide to find good company, good ale and good seaside towns with good festivals. Are YOU dancing or observing watch out for me with me MUDCAT T shirt on. Keith |
Subject: RE: BS: Whitby Folk Week From: Mrs.Duck Date: 30 Jun 00 - 11:00 AM Keith if I wear my T shirt do you think people will think I'm you? Any musicians or dancers(cotswold) who are unattached and fancy a good time (I don't think that sounds quite right but I'm sure you get my drift) will certainly be made welcome by the Scratch who dance out on Monday Wdenesday and Friday. See Geoff the Duck in the Tap and Spile for details. Thursday looks like being a good day foe a Mudcat barbeque around 6pm so it won't intefere with any festival things you want to go to. Again the Tap and Spile will be the place to find out. Don't forget to wear your badges-contact Tig or the Badger soon if you want them for Whitby as they won't be there until Tuesday I think. |
Subject: RE: BS: Whitby Folk Week From: selby Date: 02 Jul 00 - 10:25 AM I don't know Mrs Duck but if anyone's confused I have not got any little ducklings. Is the BBQ going to be a battle as it is billed as foe a mudcat bbq (bg) have you already gat a programme? Keith |
Subject: RE: BS: Whitby Folk Week From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 02 Jul 00 - 11:31 AM "Just wear your tee shirt and talk to anyone similar". It might be wiser to wear something else as well. Got any contact details for Stoupe Cross, Jim Dunn? How far out is it, and how much do they charge for a tent site etc. |
Subject: RE: BS: Whitby Folk Week From: Terry K Date: 02 Jul 00 - 12:58 PM Stoupe Cross Farm is on the map of Whitby on www.streetmap.co.uk (sorry I can't do clickies yet). It is about 1.5 miles south west towards Saltwick Bay - so it's an easy walk down into Whitby and up a bloody great steep hill to get home! Their number is 01947 603210. They don't take bookings except for plots with electricity (and they are all fully booked for the week). The lady told me there's unlikely to be a problem after the weekend but she couldn't guarantee the weekend itself. I guess if your tent is small enough there shouldn't be too much problem. In any case, there is a Haven site about quarter of a mile further out if you get stuck. Cheers, Terry |
Subject: RE: BS: Whitby Folk Week From: Mrs.Duck Date: 02 Jul 00 - 03:55 PM OK Keeth if yowr jusd going to corekt all mi spillings!!!No I haven't got a programme so I suppose it might clash but I'll be there! It will be a bring your own and all share type do anyway so whoever turns up will be fine. |
Subject: RE: BS: Whitby Folk Week From: Terry K Date: 02 Jul 00 - 06:18 PM Re Stoupe Cross - that's South East, not south west - I have this left/right/east/west blindness thing. End up in some funny places sometimes...... Now, where is this Tap and Spile to find out about Thursday's barbecue? Cheers, Terry |
Subject: RE: BS: Whitby Folk Week From: roopoo Date: 03 Jul 00 - 03:08 AM Terry, it's opposite the railway station, Co-op and the marina, and just up from the public conveniences. mouldy |
Subject: RE: BS: Whitby Folk Week From: GUEST,TONY M Date: 03 Jul 00 - 05:07 PM For a night of aternative folky music every night of Folk Week...try The MIDDLE EARTH Tavern...Anything goes! I think they're all mad. The pub is over the river from the Tap & Spile, out towards the new bridge. You can play outside if the weather's O.K. TONE |
Subject: RE: BS: Whitby Folk Week From: selby Date: 04 Jul 00 - 01:23 PM Then there's the Elsinore or the Plough or the Ship to name 3 more and anywhere else you wish to sart a session. Keith |
Subject: RE: BS: Whitby Folk Week From: Mrs.Duck Date: 04 Jul 00 - 03:37 PM The Endeavour is also now a venue for singarounds and sesions. |
Subject: RE: BS: Whitby Folk Week From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 04 Jul 00 - 05:57 PM Last time I was there I spent most of my time in the Sailing Club, where there's normally three sepoarate musical things happening at various parts of the building and the Fisherman's Boat Club for the tune sessions. And the Seaman's Mission. At least I think I did... But Breakfast in the place where youi sign in, and trade your booking slip for a real ticket - Festival Office isn't. I should be there anyway. |
Subject: RE: BS: Whitby Folk Week From: GUEST,John Jocys Date: 11 Jul 00 - 01:27 PM There have been some very good sings and music sessions in The Tap & Spile. The beer's good too. |
Subject: RE: BS: Whitby Folk Week From: roopoo Date: 12 Jul 00 - 04:42 AM Yep, you do get a bit spoilt for choice! Trouble is, I have to turn back into a parent at some point in the evening, and wrest a young daughter out of the Spa ceilidh. In a couple of years' time she can do the wresting herself! I'll be around with Geoff and Mrs Duck, and the Scratch for some of the time. I wonder what this year's theme will be...? mouldy |
Subject: RE: BS: Whitby Folk Week From: Mrs.Duck Date: 12 Jul 00 - 12:05 PM Let's put it this way mouldy-if anything exciting is happening this year it won't be my fault! After engagements weddings and twins I'll let someone else lead the theme this time!! So no Whitby hitch or hatch. |
Subject: RE: BS: Whitby Folk Week From: roopoo Date: 12 Jul 00 - 04:58 PM We've had the hatch and the match so I hope we don't get the despatch from anybody! Of course, there was the coffin 2 years ago... mouldy ps If you're in the Jug tonight and I'm not, it's because #1 daughter has gone off bowling with her boyfriend, taking her car keys and alarm zapper with her. I can't move the blasted thing out of the way to get out, so I'm sitting here in a foul mood. At leadt I got to say hello to Bill yesterday at the Great Yorkshire Show.
|
Subject: RE: BS: Whitby Folk Week From: Patrish(inactive) Date: 21 Jul 00 - 09:04 AM I have just got hold of my Whitby programme - I can't see anything about the Mudcat. Perhaps I missed it? I have scanned it quite thoroughly. Does anyone know if there will be a workshop, or just a get together? Patrish |
Subject: RE: BS: Whitby Folk Week From: dick greenhaus Date: 21 Jul 00 - 10:14 PM Patrish- Ask Bill Sables or Graham Pirt. Whatever there's going to be, Susan of DT and I will take part. |
Subject: RE: BS: Whitby Folk Week From: Mrs.Duck Date: 22 Jul 00 - 01:02 PM Me too!! |
Subject: RE: BS: Whitby Folk Week From: roopoo Date: 06 Aug 00 - 06:07 AM Got back last night from me annual 2 weeks alternately rusting and baking in Scotland, seized my programme, and you're right - not a mention! I'd better have a word with Bill on Wednesday and see if you all know something I don't. mouldy |
Subject: RE: BS: Whitby Folk Week From: Dorrie Date: 15 Aug 00 - 09:52 AM See all the mudcatters on saturday then!!!! love dorrie xxx |
