Came to find a song, noticed a thread that looked interesting, read it, promptly registered, so as to have a name to attach to anything I wish to say.

I feel that is the least I owe to other Mudcatters, and to the people who do the work and provide the Mudcat for us to use.

I'd probably used the dt before but for Mudcat, it was "word of mouth other music groups". It was actually a 2 step process for me. The first time, I'd managed to help SingsIrish/Mary with a couple of song/chord/tune requests which I think got posted to umf and I got a note via email saying thanks. Somewhere within the short correspondance that followed, I learned about the Mudcat forum and came over for a look. I didn't stay long as I was put off by so many threads with "BS" in the title and perhaps my general feeling toward the place was that it could be "cliquey".

I ended up back here maybe a month after. I can't remember the reason for the email correspondence but I had some with Jeri as a result of discussing music in rmc. Again Mudcat was reccomended and this time round, I decided to put my initial feelings about the site aside and try to stick around.

It's been an interesting journey to me from there on. One perhaps where I have almost gone full circle although overall, I do see genine attempts at a community rather than my initial feelings.

Jon

My baby sister, Celtic Soul's group had a link to the Mudcat on their website. In July of 2000, I was looking for a source of European circus music, and she showed me how to get into the Mudcat and how to use it.

She didn't join until a year later.

But aren't you glad she lurked prior to that?

I first came looking for lyrics - Back when the DT was hosted at Xerox - "lost" it for a while, then found it again (now the Mudcat) because I KNEW I had found those lyrics on the web...somewhere...and kept trying until I found them again.

lurked in the forum a bit and then joined because there was just to much good stuff here.

First found the lyrics for many of the songs at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee way back when it was an FTP site. Lost it for a while, found it somewhere that I can't remember, lost that, found it again at Xerox, lost that for a while, then found it again as Mudcat. So don't try to get away from me, Mudcat, I'll find you again!

"karen k" sent me an e-pistle to alert me to a thread that was discussing Folk-Legacy Records, an outfit with which I have long been associated. She thought I might be a bit interested. I've been checking in quite regularly ever since. I don't mind the BS threads. If a title looks to be of interest, I check it out. Otherwise, I just slide over 'em. No trouble.

Bob Bolton constantly talks about it & I gave him info on a song written by a friend that a Catter wanted - back in 2000. Then I went on line july last year & joined after 2 posts as guest Sandra. I have printed out a number of songs, & lots of threads - songs, jokes & serious stuff.

I never miss a night, except when I'm at a festival.

I used Digitrad for several years until it disappeared. A year or so later a friend told me that it's back, under a different umbrella and gave me the address. I still didn't tumble to the Forum part for quite awhile. I was afraid it was just a chat room- and I had never done that.

Well finally one day I opened the Forum and read a few threads, getting more and more interested over the next few weeks. Then one day, in connection with the 2000 projected fiasco, there was a thread, saying: Pacific Coast, Hawaii and Alaska, Check in, or something to that effect, and that's when I outed myself. :)

Since then, I mention Mudcat to EVERYBODY- but to my knowledge few of them have ever checked it out. I guess I don't belong in Sales.

I bless a local librarian; I sheepishly askes where they stored all the old LP's because I wanted to trace a lyric from decades back. She said, "What song?". turned to her computer and in seconds handed me a printout with theMudcat logo on yop.

I passed it along, forgot about for a while, then remembered the odd name and searched again. After learning more than I ever wanted to know about small earth-moving equipment, i finally figured out the difference between .com and .org, and here I am.

Now if I could only learn to touch-type -- and remember that the 'tab' key doesn't work in the mesage box ....

First of all, I was looking for music in the public domain that I could record arrangements of for use in amusement machines, and on fairground rides.

I didn't understand the thread thing and completely ignored it.

Then John J told me to have a wander about the place, (bless him), I posted a couple of threads, received a lot of help, and some (deserved) abuse.

I'm still here and I can't think of another place where you can get advice on nits, cats, illness, relationships, pagan chants, cleaning glass, and music.

Deckman (Bob Nelson) emailed a couple of years back to tell me about this place, and that there was a thread discussing my dad (John Dwyer) who was a folksinger in the Pacific Northwest until his death in 1997. This site has been great for remembering songs I thought I had forgotten, and as I get ready to start burning CD's from Dad's tapes and organizing his collection for donation to a university library, I'm sure Mudcat will be an invaluable resource.

I used only the Digitrad for a couple of years, avoiding the Forum because I knew nothing about it and figured it was one those "chat rooms", which I had never been in. The occasion came up that I couldn't find what I was looking for and I posted a request for help in the forum. The knowledge and generosity was overwhelming, so I began to explore the threads and I continue to visit for the knowledge and the company of such wonderful folk.

As so many have said above, I was searching the internet for music. In my case, I was specifically looking for nautical music and sea shanties. I found not only this one, but another that is a veritable wealth of info, some of which is not found here (and vice versa).

I also found at relatively the same time that our web mistress had a link for it at our website. I have used the digitrad for *years* before actually coming in here to post.

If anyone is interested, I'll start another thread and post the URL to the other site.

It happened one afternoon in Tennessee. I was talking to a man who said he had once jammed with Blind Lemon Jefferson. He had a patch on one eye and kept rhyming in Italian between disjointed statements about the Blues. Just when I thought we were getting to the crux of the matter, along comes this other guy who says he needs me to negotiate his "connection". I have no idea what connection he is referring to and am somewhat suspicious, but it's Tuesday, so I decide to go along and see what happens.

We walk down what must be 20 or so different streets, passing shops that sell Bill Clinton masks, lingerie, out-of-print recordings, and back copies of the Readers Digest. I realize I am becoming famished, and we stop for a hot dog.

Just then I am kidnapped by a band of roving gypsies (so they say, anyway) who hold me for ransom. They want 30 million dollars from someone, anyone...

I tell them it ain't gonna work. I am just not that famous. They threaten to cut my fingernails if I don't cooperate. I say "I am cooperating! I have not reverted to Catholicism once yet today, and I think you should appreciate it." They stare at me blankly, and keep dialing numbers, looking for someone with 30 million.

It turns out that no one is willing to pay 30 million or even 30,000. Matter of fact, no one is willing to pay much of anything at all. (Fortunately these gypsies do not have the number of any of the people who actually realize my true worth...)

I play a few songs, and eventually they decide to just call the whole thing off...they have obviously got the wrong guy. We all hop a train to Albuquerque where there are some very neat Indian Medicine people and stuff like that. A spiritual tune-up could be just what these guys need....

I lose the gang somewhere in Albuquerque the next day at a powwow, and am chanting Om nama shivaya in a nice shady spot, when the payphone rings. I answer it. It's my old friend, CarolC. She informs me that if I ever should feel the need for some harmless diversion I should log onto Mudcat.

"What's Mudcat?" I ask. "Is she an exotic dancer or something?" Carol explains further. "Oh. The internet. Well, okay, thanks..."

That pretty well sums it up.

But how did she get the payphone number?

The forum started 1 October, 1996, but Bill D lives in a different time warp. I had used the Digital Tradition since about 1992 and I had used the Xerox site, and then it disappeared. I got my "fix" of music discussion at alt.music.lyrics and then rec.music.folk, but I got tired of the flames and the Spam and the singer-songwriters. I discovered Mudcat in January, 1997, probably because somebody mentioned it at rec.music.folk.
Hey, has anybody noticed http://www.mudcatblues.com? I wonder how they get my mouse to act that way....
