Subject: RE: G.Papavgeris/new album+FREE launch conct From: Barry Finn Date: 27 Jan 08 - 04:26 PM I was getting ready to book a flight when I noticed it wasn't a "Free Lunch" as I first thought. I then looked at the exchange rate & then the flight price I decieded that it would take more than a free lunch with George to make the whole adventure no so cost preventive. I'm just gonna have to find a job one of these days. Until then, have a good launch. Barry |

Subject: RE: G.Papavgeris/new album+FREE launch conct From: KT Date: 27 Jan 08 - 06:33 PM Bravo, George!! WOW! You are just writing up a storm, aren't you?! I have to say, that for the first time in my life, I considered booking a reservation to fly across the pond with no other reason than to attend a concert! But then the voice of reason kicked in......... Congrats, George! I'll be looking forward to hearing your new CD! KT |

Subject: RE: G.Papavgeris/new album+FREE launch concert From: GUEST, Tom Bliss Date: 27 Jan 08 - 07:25 PM George. You are a talentless useless no-hoper of a man. How DARE you waste everyone's time with your pfiffle and your pfaffle, and your songs of no worth, value or even merit!? And as for your 'Los Marbles,' Hah! (I say)! Who? Jonny and Vicki? PAH! They are even more useless at everythink than you are, and they can barely play their (many and very difficult) instruments, let alone be nice and polite and talented and lovable people. (not) (at all) Seriously, though: Have a fantastic night, all. I'd be there like a shot if I could. Tom Psst, draw near and harken people: I've witnessed the genesis of this album, from first takes at Doug's studio to final mixes at La Teverna Papavgeris and it's the best thing El Greko has done yet. Powerful, simple... deep and polished yet fresh as a newly folded dolmades. J and V provide just enough support but no more, and it all hangs together beautifully. If it's not R2 album of the year in 09 I'll, I'll err, speak sharply to John Leonard. |
Subject: RE: G.Papavgeris/new album+FREE launch concert From: Hawker Date: 27 Jan 08 - 07:51 PM George, Would love to come but its not practical. Have a great night, look forward to getting my hands on a copy of the said CD soon! Now heres a question..... How many of you read in that first post...... Soft Long Cock Hotel? Perhaps it was just my mind playing tricks on me again!!!!!!! I wonder what the psychologists out there would make of that! Cheers, Lucy |

Subject: RE: G.Papavgeris/new album+FREE launch concert From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 28 Jan 08 - 07:02 PM it gave me a bit of a shock that George has 7 CDs cos I immediately counted those on my shelf & there were only 5 & I thought I had every title. What have I missed? Another example of my butterfly mind cos I'm listening to "For my next trick" (& loving it, naturally!) so the case is on my desk next to my keyboard & easily visible as I type. See ya 8th March when I can get my copy sandra |

Subject: RE: G.Papavgeris/new album+FREE launch concert From: George Papavgeris Date: 05 Feb 08 - 11:41 AM First review just in: "Born in Salonika, Greece in 1953, singer/guitarist George Papavgeris discovered folk music in Oxford in the early 70s, but only became a songwriter in recent years. Since then, his songs have been covered by the likes of Andy Irvine, Roy Bailey and Martyn Wyndham-Read. Listening to his seventh album Life's Eyes, it's easy to understand why. The deeply affecting 'Regrets' was written following the death of Papavgeris' father, but will resonate powerfully with anyone who's lost a loved one – and besides that, its melody is simply beautiful, bringing to mind the best work of Leonard Cohen. The waltz-tempo 'Harbour Lights', inspired by the singer's former home in Thessaloniki, is a classic in the making, with a universal appeal that goes far beyond the specificity of its origin. 'Rush Hour' is another highlight, sung as a round-style trio of harmony and countermelody with labelmates Vicki Swan and Jonny Dyer, who contribute an impressive variety of backing instruments elsewhere on the album: Swan plays double bass, flute and Scottish smallpipes, all very well indeed, while Dyer wields the guitar, accordion and keyboards with equal aplomb and grace. Subject: RE: G.Papavgeris/new album+FREE launch concert From: Andrez Date: 05 Feb 08 - 10:04 PM So, tough question. George is coming to Oz for the National Folk festival. I have only ever heard one track of his that I really loved. If I had to choose one of the seven CD's to buy which would it be (budgets might allow for a second one but I cant count on that as yet). Cheers, Andrez |

Subject: RE: G.Papavgeris/new album+FREE launch concert From: George Papavgeris Date: 18 Feb 08 - 06:59 PM Thanks, folks! I am always intrigued at which songs catch the imagination of the radio programmers. Rozellas is a bit of a surprise hit (6 stations played it so far), as I hadn't expected the "local market" to go for it - it is definitely one for the Aussies, that one. But very gratified nevertheless. And also pleased that Regrets, Rebetiko, Another Day, Harbour Lights and Apology got some airing. I am just waiting to see who will be the first to dare play Upwind Of Me! :-) Book now your free seats for the launch! LTS, did you want any? Micca, where are you? |

Subject: RE: G.Papavgeris/new album+FREE launch concert From: George Papavgeris Date: 19 Feb 08 - 08:57 AM Yes, Kitty, Rozellas with 2 out of 12 strings off tune is an experience, isn't it? :-) Alex, I stand corrected and in awe; you know, I am still reticent about singing "Upwind..." in front of Mary O'Connor at Herga, as I don't wish to offend (I can eff and blind with the worst of them, but still have some taboos like saying naughty words in front of venerable octogenarians). Robin, I might just do you a deal, me old makker. Mattkeen, I am not sure on which occasion I behaved like a gent, but as you were watching, I am really glad I did!:-) Roll up, roll up, for your free launch concert tickets! |

Subject: RE: G.Papavgeris/new album+FREE launch concert From: George Papavgeris Date: 20 Feb 08 - 12:27 AM Over the last 4 years Los Marbles has always consisted of some the best musicians and singers thet UK and Australia have to offer, many of them Catters: Mary Humphreys and Anahata, Chris & Jude from Isambarde, Miranda Sykes (of SoH fame), Johnny Collins, Cloudstreet, John Breeze, Graeme Knights etc etc. Its current incarnation, Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer are very worthy successors, a great act in their own right, superb multi-instrumentalists and sensitive singers and Jonny makes a chocolate pudding to die for. Their versatility "smacked my gob" and in many ways shaped this album, by giving me new ideas and allowing the music to go down unpredicted paths. That they are one of the loveliest couple of people I have ever met, came as an extra. So, yes, it would be very fair to say that Vicki & Jonny have had a big hand in the making of this album. And I am grateful. Not enough to sign over any royalties :-), but VERY grateful! |

Subject: RE: G.Papavgeris/new album+FREE launch concert From: Micca Date: 02 Mar 08 - 06:58 AM What a Talented man!!! and his "backing group" were outstanding!! especial praise to Vicki for the Flute and small pipes parts, but Jonnys "Upside down" guitar and playing was wonderful also. The support singers were superb, Moses voice just gets better and better every time I hear her and their harmony singing was !!!.Les Sullivan was his usual excellent ,thought provoking, self (and I finally got my copy of the second CD "Echos of Lowlands") Moorley man was excellent also in a very interesting set. But then George came on and his set was a spectrum of feelings expressed in the most wonderful and subtle use of words that seemed to touch places in ones soul in a way not previously felt or understood. I thank and applaud you for a superb "launch concert" It was even worth the journey home and speaking of the journey home, my thanks to Kitty and Derek for the lift to the station, it made the difference between getting home and being stuck in Central London waiting for a night bus, Many thanks, Micca |

Subject: RE: G.Papavgeris/new album+FREE launch concert From: George Papavgeris Date: 02 Mar 08 - 01:39 PM Those days were but yesterday, Breezy, and not likely to be forgotten. Your name was indeed mentioned several times at home after the concert, during an appropriately wet postmortem conversation, and it wasn't just because of the trenchcoat either! Micca, I am touched by your comments, and I apologise sincerely for interrupting you in mid-pull (oh! the imagery!). I was particularly gratified by the presence of so many Mudcatters. It also means that my persistent advertising here, at the risk of incurring the wrath and scorn of some, has been worth it! It was as a reaction to their presence there, and of course the whole left by his absence, that I dedicated "One by one" to ColK. I know that he would have been there, as he had at all my other CD launches. Still on cloud nine and my objectivity is probably low, but I too found it a great evening from my side of the mic. I was so keen for it to go well, in order to please so many. ColK would have been one of them. Of course the evening's success owes a lot to Jonny and Vicki, Doug, David, Christine and Steve, Les... But I "...hope that I have played my part and been worthy of my friend". |

Subject: RE: G.Papavgeris/new album+FREE launch concert From: Charley Noble Date: 02 Mar 08 - 02:55 PM Evidently one of our Roll & Go members, Norris Dale, is at large in England (he's a quality control engineer overseeing the recycling of some widget machinery that's being shipped to Dublin) and by the sheerest coincidence happened to attend one of George's concerts. I'm not sure which one but Nor is bringing me back my own private copy of the new CD. I can hardly wait. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: G.Papavgeris/new album+FREE launch concert From: Folkiedave Date: 02 Mar 08 - 02:57 PM George I am so pleased it went well - but anyone now who has heard it will know there was no alternative. I was privileged to get an early copy of this for my radio show and have played it twice - confession time - once by mistake - so I played the track I should have played the first week the second week. Dave (not the first time I have dued a track wrongly and probably not the last). |

Subject: RE: G.Papavgeris/new album+FREE launch concert From: MoorleyMan Date: 02 Mar 08 - 05:15 PM It was indeed a fabulous night, a typical Herga-style welcome for all and yes, great to see all those other friendly Catters. It was a real privilege to be involved and invited. And yes, I too felt the "presence" of ColK very much... I won't try to add to the above posts, as it's all been said now, but I'll still congratulate George on another truly excellent sendoff, well organised and supremely well run. It has taken me the biggest part of today to "come down" from the buzz of the occasion, hence the late post! I reckon that buzz will last long enough for us to forgive George for giving himself up to the Aussies for the next three weeks!! Have a great time over there George, but please do come back mate! |
