Subject: Lost Folk Tapes From: Spleen Cringe Date: 29 Jan 11 - 06:51 PM This may be a long shot but... inspired by Janie's thread about great bands you wouldn't have heard, I decided to set up this website: Lost Folk Tapes As you'll notice if you visit, there are no lost folk tapes on there yet...which is where hopefully some of you Mudcatters might step in! I've reproduced the message to musicians page below. I'd be really grateful if you can hav a read of it, and if it appplies to you, think about getting involved. If it doesn't, but you know people who might be interested, please pass the word on. And if you can generally let people know about it, either via other forums you're part of or Facebook or email lists/groups or whatever, that would be fab. On more thing to add - this is completely non-commercial, not-for-profit and so on and it's not yet another bootleg site etc... its simply about giving people a chance to hear forgotten music... and hopefully it will be a lot of fun. Here goes... A MESSAGE TO MUSICIANS e know that there are hundreds, probably thousands, of people out there who sung in folk clubs, played in coffee houses, performed at demonstrations, whooped it up at band dances, entertained in bars, busked in parks and generally made all sorts of folk music in all sorts of circumstances. And we know many of you made recordings of what you did - to sell at gigs, to give away to friends and family, to raise funds for a cause or maybe just because you have the opportunity and wanted to do it. You didn't necessarily make the big time, you may have only played in your local area. Equally you may have trawled across the country week after week, chasing all the bookings you could get. You may be completely unknown, you may be a name plenty of people will remember. You may be from the USA, The UK, Australia or anywhere else in the world. You may have hung up your hat forty years ago, you may still be playing regularly. You may have been a traditional musician, an acoustic singer songwriter, the bass player in a folk-rock band, a psychedelic troubadour, a protest singer or all or none of these. Whether you made a self-released cassette to sell at the end of your gigs, or a long defunct local record label released an album with you, or you went into a studio to make a demo or you captured a halfway decent recording of a live performance, you are the people this website is about... and we want to hear from you! We'd like you to send us your music. Ideally, we'd like it digitally (and we don't care about the format - MP3, WAV, AIFF or anything else you prefer to use) but we're also happy to accept stuff burned onto CDs, cassette tapes or even vinyl by post. We also want your stories and memories... and the odd photo would be even better. We'll only do with it want you want us to: we can put it on the site as sound files for visitors to listen to or we can make it available for people as a free download, if that's what you'd like. Simply get in touch with us using the form on the contact page... we're looking forward to hearing from you. The only proviso is that we can only accept stuff you have some sort of ownership of... if the rights to your recordings belong to EMI or Warners or someone, we can't post them on the site, because, um, we don't want to get sued or closed down. So please get rummaging through the boxes in you attic and get in touch with us - you're the only reason we created this site. And thank you. Once more: Lost Folk Tapes ************************************************** Thanks for any interest, comments, support... or promises of great, lost music! Best, Spleen

Subject: RE: Lost Folk Tapes - An Invitation From: Spleen Cringe Date: 30 Jan 11 - 03:41 PM Thanks, Sean - will email you. What I forgot to add was two more things. Firstly, feel free to PM me here at Mudcat for more info about the site or with any questions. And secondly, if you've already reissued your lost folk recordings (whether its a proper remastered CD or a home produced CDr or anything in between) and want us to put a track or two up to listen to at the site along links to your website or info about how people can buy a copy, we're more than happy to do that too! Cheers, Spleen (hopefully checking his inbox!) |
Subject: RE: Lost Folk Tapes PermaThread - An Invitation From: Spleen Cringe Date: 01 Feb 11 - 03:52 PM We now have a Facebook page. And 575 people have visited the website so far today... WOW! Thanks. Hopefully, fingers crossed, we should have some stuff up at the site very soon... we've had some interesting emails so far. Best, Spleen |
Subject: RE: Lost Folk Tapes PermaThread - Update From: Spleen Cringe Date: 07 Feb 11 - 04:19 AM Hello All, We now have eight separate articles/interviews on the go, the first of which will be posted shortly along with a selection of sound files. We continue to get enquiries from musicians and singers who were active in the period we're covering every day. Keep 'em coming! We've also had a couple of interesting emails from people who made recordings at folk clubs and other events... I'm now appealing for the amateur photographers out there to get in touch. If you were in the habit of taking photos at your local folk club or at festivals or other folk-related events, it would be great if you got in touch - it would be good to post some of your images on the site to illustrate the articles - or maybe even to do a feature on your photos. If you're interested you could PM me here or contact me via the website contact page. Cheers, Spleen/Nigel |

Subject: RE: Lost Folk Tapes PermaThread - Update From: GUEST,Ralphie Date: 10 Mar 11 - 12:14 AM Thanks for that Tim.... I do have other stuff, but it's from 1986 which I think is outside Mr Cringes timeline. Hey who knows, I might just release it on my label, alongside Crows! and Eric, and the Hackney Martians...whether the world is ready for such delights is another matter! |
Subject: RE: Lost Folk Tapes PermaThread - Update From: Surreysinger Date: 10 Mar 11 - 08:00 PM Re those last three suggestions - good idea , why not? :-) |
Subject: RE: Lost Folk Tapes PermaThread - Update From: Spleen Cringe Date: 11 Mar 11 - 02:47 AM It's a very porous time line I have, Ralphie! One of the articles coming up is about an album from (shhh!) 1987. Hope you do get to reissue some of your stuff. Don't know the other bands, but your Crows album is bloomin' excellent. **** BusyBee Paul, Miskin Man and Tim - thanks for your comments: your appreciation is appreciated, if you know what I mean. There's plenty more on the way... |
Subject: RE: Lost Folk Tapes PermaThread - Update From: GUEST,Ralphie Date: 11 Mar 11 - 05:10 AM I was fortunate enough to buy the Master tapes of the first Crows album. Also have some local radio tapes of the second incarnation of CROWS when Jon Burge was replaced by Dave Bordewey, that have never seen the light of day. ERIC (me, Colin Thompson, and the late Nigel Chippindale)was a charity project after Nigel died. And then a few years ago, I found a tape of a few more tracks. Which I have no idea when or where they were recorded! HACKNEY MARTIANS, (me, Alan Lamb, Chris Pitt, Gavin Atkin) is probably the most bizarre project I have ever been involved with! Again, it was released only on cassette. I could use the word eclectic, but it's too posh a word! Multiple overdubs by bouncing from one tape to another, sound effects a plenty (think crap Spike Jones) and a rare example of the "Tenoroon" (lika "Bassoon" but smaller!) Even mating tortoises....No, I don't know why either! |
Subject: RE: Lost Folk Tapes PermaThread - Update From: Surreysinger Date: 11 Mar 11 - 03:01 PM Hmmm .. re "Buddy can you spare a Quebzod" (yes I know the spelling isn't quite right there, but hey! )you forgot the musical box, the nuclear (?) explosion, and the squeaky toys! It's worth it all for the Radzetsky March and Delilah (even if the words are wrong) alone! "Take it away Ralphie ...... further away!" (I may have misremembered that bit). Bizarre maybe, but definitely eminently listenable to (and one that favours returning to check out what you missed hearing the first time around).I'm a fan. (And Crows is pretty damn fine as well) |
Subject: RE: Lost Folk Tapes PermaThread - Update From: Surreysinger Date: 11 Mar 11 - 07:35 PM Spelling not helped by dodgy typing...Quebzog? |
Subject: RE: Lost Folk Tapes PermaThread - Update From: GUEST,Ralphie Date: 12 Mar 11 - 12:42 AM Yes "Quebzog" indeed. I can't even remember all the stupid effects we put on the Martians tape...Duckaphone was one, Reel cowbells on "I Miss My Swiss" and for some reason "The Spaniard that blighted my life" seems to be covered in pigs, not bulls...! As I said. eclectic, and not for the faint-hearted...(we were big in Finland though!) |
Subject: RE: Lost Folk Tapes PermaThread - Update From: Spleen Cringe Date: 30 Mar 11 - 08:39 AM For your delight and delectation we bring you The Compleat Ram's Bottom! Recorded live in 1981 by John Terry and accompanied by an extensive interview with Keith Kendrick... happy listening! The Compleat Ram's Bottom |
Subject: RE: Lost Folk Tapes PermaThread - Update From: VirginiaTam Date: 30 Mar 11 - 09:37 AM wonderful... |
Subject: RE: Lost Folk Tapes PermaThread - Update From: Spleen Cringe Date: 31 Mar 11 - 03:02 AM Thanks Tam... This is one band I'd love to have seen live. Particularly taken with the idea of the band disappearing off stage one by one, as a taped version of themselves continues to play - then re-emerging as a Morris side! |
Subject: RE: Lost Folk Tapes PermaThread - Update From: GUEST,Ralphie Date: 31 Mar 11 - 04:22 AM Slightly connected. Many years ago at Sidmouth we (ERIC) did an expanded ceilidh with "Six Hands in Tempo" (Theres that derbyshire connection again!) called by Jo Freya ( Didn't know whether to call it "Erics hands in Jo, or Jos hands in Eric!) For the dance out at the end we played "Beside the seaside" In the middle we fired off 3 MIDI Linked Casio keyboards (The diddly ones!) programmed to play the same, and we all shuffled off to the bar...Went on for 10 minutes until we took pity, and pulled the plug! Shame, maybe that it was a one off and never recorded! |
Subject: RE: Lost Folk Tapes PermaThread - Update From: Spleen Cringe Date: 05 Apr 11 - 06:51 PM Here's our latest addition to the site: an interview with Will Downes from The Amazing Catsfield Steamers and a few tracks from their sole album, 1981's United Friends... |

Subject: RE: Lost Folk Tapes PermaThread - Update From: ChrisJBrady Date: 06 Apr 11 - 06:06 AM Lost Folk Tapes would be an ideal UK venue for the 'lost' tapes from the ABC of various concerts in Sydney in the 1960s. Subject: RE: Lost Folk Tapes PermaThread - Update From: GUEST,Spleen Astray Date: 06 Apr 11 - 09:44 AM Hi Chris, I'd love to host a bunch of long lost radio programmes, and some of our Antipodean chums have sent me some wonderful stuff that was originally aired on ABC. The main problem from my point of view is that of permission. I don't particularly want to jeopardise the future of the site by putting material up without the okay of the broadcasters - which would undoubtedly mean getting into the world of licences and contracts, and most likely, requiring money to change hands and vast chunks of time consumed managing the inevitable bureaucracy (For example, someone got in touch recently to say they had years' worth of recordings they'd made at their local folk clubs and they had donated it to their local Public Records Office/County Archive. When I contacted the PRO concerned to see if I could access some of this material, the fees were far too much to contemplate for a site that is essentially run at a loss in my spare time as a labour of love - though I can understand that PROs need to cover their costs, too!). I'm happy to try to gain the necessary permissions (and I'll always do this for any recordings that I put up at the site anyway - usually from the artists featured, which is why I'm currently sitting on some real corkers I haven't been able to add yet...). However, given that I'm not running this site as a commercial venture, I don't want to get into paying the Beeb or ABC or whoever for the right to broadcast something they no longer care about and have probably lost. I might be being too conservative with a small 'c' about this and would welcome alternative views. ******* Charley - thanks for your comments - they are appreciated! Nigel |
Subject: RE: Lost Folk Tapes PermaThread - Update From: Andy Jackson Date: 06 Apr 11 - 12:21 PM If my memory serves me right, the Catsfield Steamers were used on a batch of non needle time CDs, maybe even L.P.s. In series like old english music type thing, from companies like KPM and Chappel. Sorry to be vague but its a while ago. |
Subject: RE: Lost Folk Tapes PermaThread - Update From: Spleen Cringe Date: 06 Apr 11 - 02:26 PM Hi MM - they recorded some library music at the same time as they recorded the album - maybe this is what you're referring to? I think KPM was a library label. |
Subject: RE: Lost Folk Tapes PermaThread - Update From: ChrisJBrady Date: 06 Apr 11 - 04:54 PM Hi - Nigel. Re: "Lost Folk Tapes would be an ideal UK venue for the 'lost' tapes from the ABC of various concerts in Sydney in the 1960s." I was implying - but somewhat badly sorry - that if approached Warren Fahey might be willing to grant you permission to use his recordings. Maybe its worth an email - he's very approachable. He has other ABC folk programmes on his website such as the "When the Billy Boils" series. Just an idea. |

Subject: RE: Lost Folk Tapes PermaThread - Update From: Spleen Cringe Date: 22 Sep 11 - 06:55 PM As a change from our usual diet of folk singers and folk groups, here's a couple of recordings of mummers' plays from the late 70s... hope you enjoy them! We also feature an interview with John Burrell of the Knaresborough Mummers and some fab photos of the team in action. Subject: RE: Lost Folk Tapes PermaThread - Update From: Stilly River Sage Date: 24 Sep 11 - 11:33 PM Just noticed this thread. I have about six linear feet of boxes of tapes (they're stored vertically) from my Dad's house. Some he had kept in his shelves for the contents, and others he had marked to record over (because he may have transferred them to cassettes, or thought they were too old to fool with.) I have a tape recorder/player that my aunt gave me a few years ago - it's an old one, so I'll have to work out a cable and device interface between the Phillips player and the computer. Any suggestions? I have a box of cables she sent along with it, but I haven't looked at them in a while. Might be RCA plugs, might not. More on that later; I'll trace this thread. Dad was a reference librarian (John Dwyer) from the Pacific Northwest who taped a lot of folks in coffee houses and hoots and song circles, and this includes a few Mudcatters, as far back as the early 1960s. I own these tapes and the rights to them, though I would defer to the performers on the tapes if they can be located if they are used in any way. SRS |
Subject: RE: Lost Folk Tapes PermaThread - Update From: Andy Jackson Date: 25 Sep 11 - 02:54 AM When you've sorted the technicals, might I suggest the following. Make sure you have plenty of room on your P.C. Pick an interesting looking tape. Play and record all the way through. Don't be tempted to spool through the tape. When the tape has finished inspect the tape heads and guides for oxide dust etc. With luck there may not be too much, but with old tapes the oxide layer sometimes just falls off. This is why I recommend recording the first play - it may be the last! It's worth the effort for even a few small snippets. Good luck. Andy |
Subject: RE: Lost Folk Tapes PermaThread - Update From: Stilly River Sage Date: 25 Sep 11 - 06:12 PM Have made all of those arrangements. It's the wires to connect that are the challenge. I'll sort them out, then see what I can do. SRS |
Subject: RE: Lost Folk Tapes PermaThread - Update From: Spleen Cringe Date: 25 Sep 11 - 06:22 PM Hi SRS. Something like this might be of use - I have one: Behringer UFO 202. Amazon have them for $28.69 on your side of the pond. If you do get the tapes digitised, do get in touch if you want to put them up at Lost Folk Tapes. It may take a while to track down all the artists, but its worth a shot... At the moment all our posts are about UK performers, but that's just an accident of geography! Cheers SplCr |
Subject: RE: Lost Folk Tapes PermaThread - Update From: Spleen Cringe Date: 25 Sep 11 - 06:25 PM PS - I'm not sure if the Behringer works with reel to reel though. I'll alert Ralph Jordan to this query. As a former BBC sound engineer he may be able to advise... |
Subject: RE: Lost Folk Tapes PermaThread - Update From: Janie Date: 25 Sep 11 - 10:23 PM A big doff of my hat to you, Spleen Cringe. I would like to post a link to your website on Facebook, with a little bit of an explanation and a little bit of a call to some of the folkies and Appalachian trad. musicians I knew in my youth whose cassette tapes are no longer available, but with whom I have reconnected, either directly or indirectly, through facebook over the past year or so. I'm not on Facebook very much, however, and they have switched things around so that I can't figure out how to share a link to your website now. Advise? |
Subject: RE: Lost Folk Tapes PermaThread - Update From: Spleen Cringe Date: 26 Sep 11 - 04:56 AM Hi Janie! You should be able to add a link to a 'wall update' on Facebook by clinking the link tab just above the 'status update' box (the box that says 'what's on your mind'). Alternatively, there is a Lost Folk Tapes Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Lost-Folk-Tapes/190121704350973 that you could possibly alert people to. The web address and email is on the page. The email is contact@lostfolktapes.com, by the way. It would be great to get some music up there from US folkies and trad musicians... after all it was your posts about 'great bands you wouldn't have heard' that inspired me to set up the site in the first place! SRS - I've emailed John Terry who has transferred loads of material from reel-to-reel tape for the website for some technical advice, which I'll post when I get it. Lots of new stuff on the site in the coming few weeks, so watch this space... |

Subject: RE: Lost Folk Tapes PermaThread - Update From: Jim Carroll Date: 26 Sep 12 - 05:25 AM In the sixties MacColl and Seeger released 10 magnificent albums of British and American ballads, 'The Long Harvest' on the Argo label. In 1969 as an addition they recorded 2 albums of non-Child ballads and MacColl gave a lecture on ballads to a live audience at the Decca studio in Hampstead - I was in that audience and asked a question. The albums were never released and apparently the recordings were lost - shame. Any information on these would be gratefully received Jim Carroll |
