Subject: Tune Req: Can anyone identify this tune fragment?
From: GUEST,Alex

Hello!

Here's a link to a refrain from a song my Mum remembers her grandfather singing: Mystery Tune

She thinks the lyrics were (phonetically) "eye-tee-eye-tee-illy oooh Tily, you'll have to marry me now".

For context: My great grandfather was an Edwardian from the East End of London. That's the only line my Mum remembers. It could have been corrupted over time. The only searchable lyric is "Marry me now" and that hasn't been very fruitful. It could be a music hall song or an old drinking tune?

Any help gratefully received.

I didn't recognize the melody, but in the event it doesn't ring any bells for someone else, there is a Google app that will listen to a piece of music and look for it wherever the heck it looks and possibly come back with the song title. I have never tried it, but if you are interested in that I found this:

GUEST,Alex, your link didn't work for me (probably because of the computer system I'm using.) However, I note that The Sandman identified the tune as cock of the north. If it's the cock of the north that I know, it is known in the Irish tradition as "Chase Me, Charlie".

The link in the first post works. It may take a time or two of a left-click. If that doesn't work, try a right-click and open it in a new window.
