I sing unaccompanied. Or as some say, unaccomplished. I sing with other people. I sing with an instrument. But I have never got into karaoke. Does anyone on here partake?

Yes, many times before my major stroke in 2014. I also used to do karaoke covers using backing tracks from Youtube   (Georgiansilver1) on Youtube.

Yep. If you're not in a band and not doing gigs as a singer/songwriter, then it's kind of the only acceptable way to sing in public outside church or choirs.

I sing in public once a week, on average, and accompany myself on guitar or various other instruments. I perform at singarounds and open mics in local pubs and do floor spots at a folk club. I never take part in karaoke.

I am not in a band and, although I may include a small selection of my own songs, I mainly perform my versions of well known songs from several differnt genres. I would not describe myself as a singer/songwriter and have never had a paid gig. I am not in a choir and am highly unlikely to be found in a church.

Wow, did not expect a point-by-point rebuttal of my remark.

Perhaps I would be allowed to say "in many areas where there are no folk pubs". Or would that put you on another high horse?

If you you like karaoke then it's fine by me but it seems a bit defeatest to say that that's all there is for the amateur music maker.

If there are no folk pubs/clubs in an area and there are people who would like to go beyond karaoke, then get together with like-minded friends and start something up, even if it's just in someone's home. Who knows, it could be the start of a blossoming folk scene.

No high horse - it's just that karaoke is not "the only acceptable way".

I've never sung in public in my life, but that is about to change forever on Wednesday. I've joined a bunch of Bude shanty singers who recently sadly lost their box player, so I volunteered to help 'em out with my tremolo harmonica-playing - not quite the same sound, but hey ho. They accepted the offer! So on St Piran's Day I'll be there with 'em at the surf club in Bude, doing a lot of Cornish/sea songs. I'll be playing along but I'm also required to sing loudly and lustily. I can't wait! Trelawney, definitely!

I've been to a few karaokes but never as a participant. I find the music quality to be generally dismal and I tend to just go for the beer...

Must dash...I recorded our rehearsals on my phone and I have songs to learn... :-)
