Subject: Fair Flower of Northumberland From: Buttons Date: 16 May 00 - 05:03 PM Hello. I'm fairly new to the Mudcat. I've really enjoyed delving in the digitrad but when I try to bring up "The Fair Flower of Northumberland" its telling me no match even though it is listed twice. Thank you for any help anyone can give. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Fair Flower of Northumberland From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 16 May 00 - 05:25 PM Like all search engines, this one has its quirks. Don't type the full title into the box; flower of northumberland will find both versions for you. It's often a good idea to enclose your keywords in square brackets so the search knows that it's a phrase, but in this case you don't need to. You can also use the new "Digitrad and Forum Search" facility on the main Forum page; this will also find references in discussion threads. Have fun! Malcolm |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Fair Flower of Northumberland From: Jeri Date: 16 May 00 - 05:27 PM When you click on the letters, the database does a search to come up with songs that start with that letter. I find that the search acts very goofy sometimes. Here are the two songs:

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Fair Flower of Northumberland From: Buttons Date: 17 May 00 - 03:16 PM Thank you both so much for your help. I have both versions now and they are both slightly different than the one I already had, which is great! I may not speak out very often or have the time to visit as much as I would like, but I really do like the Mudcat! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Fair Flower of Northumberland From: Mark Cohen Date: 17 May 00 - 10:52 PM I know of two wonderful recordings of this song (the first version), one by Dick Gaughan, I believe it's on "Coppers and Brass", and the other by Kat Eggleston, on "Outside Eden". Aloha, Mark |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Fair Flower of Northumberland From: Buttons Date: 18 May 00 - 01:56 PM The one I've heard was also the first version (or extremely close) by the John Renbourne Group. I think the cd is "Live in America". |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Fair Flower of Northumberland From: Sandy Paton Date: 18 May 00 - 09:49 PM Much as I like Kat and her songs, I really prefer Sara Grey's recording of this ballad, perhaps because it was the first version I ever heard. It's on her Folk-Legacy recording, of course, which is where I "first hear" a lot of songs. Sandy |
