I am a U.K based folk/rock singer and I would like any advice on what to do and who to contact in the music recording business in order to get my voice heard. Which record companies are specifically interested in folk/rock? Also I am unsure what the best medium for demos are: tape,MP3... and how many tracks do you record? Where do you get a good manager?

I have not writen my own material, however If I was working with someone I am confident we could produce great things. My main vocal influences include Sandy Denny and Jacqui McShee (Pentangle).

rec.music.makers.songwriting is a fabulous newsgroup. There are threads on this sort of subject there, some of the advice is quite good.

Hi Claudie, have you considered hiring a recording studio yourself? Prices vary but look towards £20 / hour, £160 / day for a good studio with sound man. At the end of the session you'll have the DAT or master CD which can be copied anywhere, but the studio which did the recording should give you a good deal. Artwork of course is extra.
As for how many tracks to record that's depends on you. How much money you got and how many takes for each track before you're happy? You don't have to do it all in one sitting.

Folowing on from Michael's suggestion, you could do worse than investigate Woodworm Studios run by Fairport's Dave Pegg and situated in the midst of the Oxfordshire 'folk/rock belt'!

Where abouts are you based, Claudie? UK Mudcatters abound in most areas and are the cheapest session musicians, working for free beer, and a credit on the sleevenotes!
