I heard a Danny Carnahan song once (or perhaps Robin) "And the sound of the Blackdaughter flowing" Any clues as to where I could find the words? a recording? Also heard a Scots song with the repeating last line of "When our true King comes o'er the water." about Charlie I would guess, from a woman's perspective. also some line about her "throwing her rock and reel away" Also, anyone know who wrote the song with the chorus "If were fishes, I know where I'd be / Casting my nets in the dark rolling sea / And if my net's empty when it comes back to shore / I'll throw it away and go fishing no more." And has Archie ever printed out the words to "Will Ye Gang Love"??

Blackdaughter = Black Water??? Rock and reel occurs in several songs "I'll sell my rock, I'll sell my reel, I'll sell my grannie's spinning wheel, I'll sell the lot when doon fa's a', and I'll gang oot o'er the hills tae Gallowa'" - THE GALLOWA HILLS. If Wishes Were Fishes is an Eric Bogle song from his album SCRAPS OF PAPER. I have my own transcription of Will Ye Gang - post an EMAIL address and I'll send it - don't worry, Dick, I'll copy you.

Thanks Alex, emai is arnowitt@sover.net I'd appreciate it. Tried transcribing it, but got hung up in a few places. Also very glad to know the source of "Wishes" Now that you mention it, it definitely feels like one of Erics, and I've enjoyed singing it for years.

In response to your "Blackdaughter" query, the song is actually "The Black Dodder" by Mick Fitzgerald, a Dublin writer sadly underappreciated. The Black Dodder is a tiny little river that empties into the Liffey in Dublin. We learned it from Mick about 20 years ago and I included it on "Journeys of the Heart" in 1989 (though without lyrics printed...sorry). CDs are still available from me at Post-Trad Productions, 725 Pomona Ave., Albany CA 94706, if you'd like one. Thanks for remembering it, though. It is a lovely song, as are most of Mick's songs. --Danny Carnahan

Dick, I did post them in response to another request by Susan AR, but I sure would love to have Danny correct my guesses as to what he was saying.
It's a beautiful song. Let me see if I can find the thread . It was sometime this month.
Blessings,
Barbara

Barbara's posting from this thread:

THE BLACK DODDER (by Mick Fitzgerald)

Oh,(New? Cruel?) springtime comes; the rain in the morning
And the swan's (?) changing view -- scattered weeds blowing;
And I am your stranger, to chance without warning
On the song of the black Dodder flowing;

CHORUS: Oh, spring rushes on and leaves you;
And trees will be green while they stand
For seasons are only a verse in your song
That you hold for a while in your hand.

She flows like a water both easy and free
Over the secrets well hidden from me;
And riches and houses keep growing; keep growing;
Soon they'll bow to the black Dodder flowing;

I stood for a while but she turned for the sea,
Saw the wind reach and touch her, before turning to me;
And I('d) walked along with her without ever knowing
The song of the black Dodder's flowing.
