I received the very sad news this afternoon from a mutual friend that Hester was found dead a couple of days ago. I don't have exact details, but know that she had for some years been on a lot of medication. I'm not sure of her exact age, but it was around 28 years.

Those who don't know her personally may know her as the daughter of Ian Woods. She attended Wigan Folk Club whenever she could, and was also a staunch member of St Michael's Amateur Dramatic Society in Wigan. She had a beautiful voice, and sang mostly unaccompanied, although she was a very able player of violin, viola and cello. She was always cheerful despite her medical problems, and exuded enthusiasm for her music and was always regaling us with humorous tales about her job at the hospital, and about life in general.

She will be very, very sorely missed.

Joan

A correction to the above - Hester was 27 years old. The funeral will be next Tuesday, 30th April at 10.45am at Moore Methodist Church, Moore, Warrington. The family have asked for donations to be sent to the British Diabetic Association instead of flowers.

Joan, that is very sad news, Hester was a great person and an ocassional member of The Shellbacks Chorus. I remember she sang brilliantly at last years Liverpool Festival.

The last time I saw Hester was mid-March when she was at Wigan Folk Club. She told us she wouldn't be there the following week as she had a job interview some distance away. I remember wishing her well for the interview, although if she'd got the job she'd have been moving out of the area and we'd not see very much of her in the future. In the few days before hearing the sad news, I'd only been thinking and wondering how her interview had gone and whether she'd got the job.

Another club member said on Tuesday, "She's only gone ahead of us - she's setting out the chairs ready for when it's our turn." Which is a nice thought, and I look forward to meeting her again when the time comes.
