Subject: RE: war songs From: Emma B Date: 22 May 02 - 03:15 PM Have you come across Karl Dallas's book 'The Cruel Wars' - 100 Soldiers' Songs from Agincourt to Ulster? If there's any particular period/aspect perhaps I could direct you to a title in the thread or forward something appropiate. Personally, two of my favourites are not 'traditional' at all but by the late (great) Keith Marsden, set in W.W.2 - 'St. Aubin sur Mer' and, more humourously, 'Left, Left, ,Steady Man' |

Subject: RE: war songs From: Sandy Paton Date: 22 May 02 - 03:44 PM Karl Dallas' book includes one song that I collected in eastern Tennessee from Abe Trivett: "That Crazy War." The last verse says Wars may come and wars may go, Keep this on your mind: If ever there comes up another war, I'll be hard to find, In that war, that crazy war. This was collected during the early days of the Vietnam protests, and old Mr. Trivett (82 years at the time) asked if I thought it was safe for him to sing it then. Ah, the power of federal intimidation! Sandy |
Subject: RE: war songs From: Emma B Date: 22 May 02 - 04:27 PM In the book it's written as 'That Bloody War' more appropiate wouldn't you say? |
Subject: RE: war songs From: Sandy Paton Date: 22 May 02 - 05:37 PM Right you are! Michael Cooney sings "That Crazy War" on his Folk-Legacy recording The Cheese Stands Alone (C-35), borrowing a verse from Abe Trivett's version. Forgive an old fogey's misguided memory. Sandy "I shall wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled..." |
