Did anyone else hear the NPR piece on Charlie Christian this morning? If not, here's a link to the Real Audio archive: Revisiting the Sound of Guitar Pioneer Christian.

The piece in celebration of Charlie's music coincides with the release of a new Charlie Christian boxed set. You can read about it and hear some of Christian's music at the Charlie Christian Web site.

I think I already have all of Charlie's stuff... including a live CD in a jazz club that I stumbled across... all of it great..

You're welcome, Rick. That's a terrific story by Les Paul and it's pretty neat to hear him tell it. And thanks for pioneering the thread title ruse. I realized after starting it that I really should have used the BS designation for even greater appeal. <g>

Too bad the boxed set doesn't include the late night sets at Minton's with Bird and Diz. I know those are poorly recorded but they're such a wonderful look at the contribution Charlie made in the development of bebop.

So did I, Jerry, until now. The new boxed set includes a number of cuts that have never before been released anywhere in the world. And since Charlie never played the same solo twice, even in the same recording session, the boxed set should be well worth having.
