Subject: ADDVERSE: Balm in Gilead From: Joe Offer Date: 03 Mar 03 - 07:39 PM Here you go, wilco. The chords are from Rise Up Singing The lyrics are what I've gleaned from several sources. I hate the idea of chords, actually - this song sounds best a cappella. -Joe Offer- BALM IN GILEAD cho: There is a balm in Gilead to make the wounded whole, There is a balm in Gilead to heal the sin-sick soul. D - - - A / D - BmA D Sometimes I feel discouraged And think my work's in vain But then the Holy Spirit Revives my soul again. D EmA D A / D EmA F#m G Don't ever be discouraged For Jesus is your friend; And if you lack for knowledge He'll ne'er refuse to lend. [CHORUS] If you cannot preach like Peter, if you cannot pray like Paul You can tell the love of Jesus, He died to save us all* [CHORUS] *Go home and tell your neighbor, He died to save us all. Each group of chords is a measure. Dashes mean same as previous measure. Slash indicates the end of a line. Here are the lyrics from the Digital Tradition. I can't say I've ever heard the "your father is your friend" phrase anywhere.

Subject: RE: Chord Req: Balm in Gilead From: Joe Offer Date: 03 Mar 03 - 08:44 PM Here's the entry on this song in E'vry Time I Feel the Spirit (Gwendolyn Sims Warren, 1997) Gilead, located on the eastern shore of the Jordan River, was a lush and fragrant area, abounding with wildflowers and beautiful forests and glens—in sharp contrast to the stark barrenness of the rest of Palestine. This district was widely known for its precious balm—a soothing, healing ointment— which had great medicinal and aromatic value. Its worth in silver was as priceless as salt in the ancient world. In a well-known Bible story, King David ran to Gilead when he fled from his traitorous son, Absalom, who was trying to take over the throne. |

N. Dett, "Religious Folk-Songs of the Negro," 1927, p. 88, with score . Also in "Songs of Zion," etc. Although sung (and recorded) by the Fisk Jubilee Singers, the song is not included in my copy of "The Songs of the Jubilee Singers," but it is in Dett's book (Hampton Institute); the Fisk Institute is credited for some 25 of the songs in the book. 3rd verse- cannot preach; cannot pray; a mistake in the Silbers' Folksinger's Wordbook. Listed in African American Spirituals Permathread. Many comments in thread 97666: Balm in Gilead |
